NYC to use Mets stadium in 2012 Olympics bid

The city will use a new stadium for the New York Mets in Queens as part of its latest bid to land the 2012 Olympics, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday.
"Our revised bid will propose an Olympic stadium to be built in a facility that would also serve as a new home for our wonderful Mets," Bloomberg said at a City Hall press conference.
The new facility will sit at the parking lot next to Shea Stadium, which is owned by the city and is where the Mets play home games.
The mayor and his NYC2012 bid committee worked through the weekend to finalize the plan, which could be presented to the International Olympic Committee next week. The IOC will make its final vote on which city wins the Summer Games on July 6.
The effort to bring the 2012 Summer Games to New York suffered a serious setback June 6, when state leaders refused to approve $300 million in funding for a proposed $2.2 billion stadium on Manhattan's West Side.
The stadium was to have been used primarily as the home of the NFL's New York Jets but would have been renovated to accommodate the 2012 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies and track and field competition.
