What Do You Like About the New Board?

Elster88

I figured this would be a refreshing change from ezboard/new board complaints.

I like being able to delete posts (or even threads) where I say what someone else has already said.

I like that when you open a thread and then go back to the main page, the main page automatically records that you visited the thread.

I like how all of someone's posts are marked with their current posting level and how many posts they've posted.

I like that I don't have to physically hit a button to mark a thread as read - it does so automatically. Therefore, on the days that I'm busy, skimming the threads is much, much easier.

I find the contrasts easier on the eyes. I don't mean from a taste point of
view, but literally ... my eyes are getting worse ... and blacks and blues
and whites and greys are easier on my eyes.

I hate the emoticon menu not being able to be disabled (at least from what
I've figured out). I wonder if they disappear by disabling emoticons altogether.
I know that would be fine with a bunch of people, but probably not fair to others.
Even I like to sprinkle one or two in from time to time, even though I like to de-
struct them too in microwaves and with auto tires.

Although I occasionally use emoticons, I wouldn't object if they were disabled. I could live with that if it would make the place more palatable to other people.

I'll put it to the voters to decide the fate of the little critters. I particularly
don't like them on the screen when working, I can tune them out at home.

This board loads a lot faster for me, is easier to read (my eyes are bad too) and peruse.

I wish that you guys could personalize it more with cranes and such though.

Well I'm starting to like it a lot more now that things are starting to look more like the old place, kudos to all that worked hard on this, to that end I would also like to thank Yancy for working hard to get the PoTG threads going again.

Y'see now that's the part I don't like.
I prefer that your first post remains your first post, and the avatar, sig line, player posting level and whatnot remains as they were at the time.
Much better sense of history and growth that way.

Agreed. As I posted in a thread now deleted, the fact that you're always the same image and posting level feels Orwellian to me.

Well, it's like this, to my mind, anyway. We lose the sacred posts (and there were some fine ones; heck people with many-digit posting levels were calling mine the Best.Seaver.Post.Ever and I'd thought about going around and trying to find just sacred posts but hadn'd figured out a good strategy...but I digresss) like I said, we lose the sacred posts and other historic posts of note.

What we gain is immediate identification of who posted something. Because it's updated, when you change your level, your username, your status, it updates all of your posts. Yes, we lose the audit trail of which order posts were made and what Met you were when you made a certain post (I've made posts referring to the guy wearing the number on the posting package (My daughter had her ball signed by him and I wanted to know where to find out more).

The effect most people will notice is that when a member hits a milestone, all their posts are updated. You don't hae to find the special foo-00th message that was the actual message that triggered the new level. Because all foo-00 messages are set to the same magic number. So there's no searrching around for the special message. And maybe there's no longer any special effort to make the message special. I dunno.

There is also a place at the bottom of the page that says "mark all forums read" that is either new or I overlooked before. I like that, because I don't always read every topic, so it was staying beige

ScarletKnight41

I like that you can click the little box and be taken to the first new post in a thread.

I like that so far I have no archiving duties and that I don't have to spend all that time on polls. It makes my lazy ass happy.

One good thing about any changes to your image and signature being made universally to all the posts you've ever made is that it eliminates the need to test such things since any goofs one might make will be overwritten anyhow.

Much easier on these tired old eyes.

Really? I find that the font crushes together too much.

What's the difference betwen an m and an r and an n?

m
rn

I have 20/15 vision and I can't tell the differmints.

MFS62
Jun 09 2005 01:38 PM

I wear slightly tinted glasses, and the old color scheme was very rough on my eyes.
I also have a friend who used to drop by the board. She told me that she found the colors irritating to her eyes, too.

We can change the font.

Edited out really really dumb question that I hope no one saw.

Yancy Street Gang

It may be kinda dull, but a Courier font would be easy to read. The letters wouldn't jam together.

modem
modern

modem
modern

(Looks like the font tag didn't work. The second set of examples should have been in Courier.)

KC
Jun 09 2005 02:37 PM

The font tag is on the hot list, I don't think courier is on the hot font list.

I'll experiment with that early one morning when no one is on.

What was the font name used on ezboard ... anyone?

Edgy DC
Jun 09 2005 03:18 PM

It'll probably turn out to be (1) something stupidly easy like 11-point verdana and (2) the same thing as here.

But that's my cynic talking. I don't think so.

I see those slices of toast flying at me even more clearly now.

I'll have to put you in touch with the Toast Marketing Board

I like this isn't EZBoard. This new board seems to run faster and more reliably than the old CPF at EzBoard.

Great to see the banners back up, good job.

KC
Jun 11 2005 04:38 PM

Thanks. The top layout assumes that in this day and age everyone is using
a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or better or it's going to look awfully busy
up there. As I used to like to say, "lose the dots!".

Thanks to Yance for a couple of the images and some good advice. He's
saved us a vast amount of time this week on a number of issues.

Everyone enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Frayed Knot
Jun 11 2005 06:47 PM

It's not the resolution that's the problem but the width of the banners collectively which stretches out everything beyond the limits of smaller monitors.
Is there anyway to either shrink them slightly or rearrange the 3 smaller ones (in a stacked order maybe) so as to not cause stuff to be lost on the right-hand side?

KC
Jun 11 2005 07:51 PM

1024 pixels is 1024 pixels regardless of monitor size. It looks ok in AOL,
Explorer, Netscape, and Firefox (all pretty up to date). If you have page
splash to the right, all I can think is that you have your text size super
big or you have an old browser that's having some funky conflict?

Let's see if anyone else chimes in with complaints before I start changing
it around again. Sorry it's not working for you.

Well, I just changed my configuration to 800x600, and it just kicked the Shea photo to the next line - I'm not getting any scrolling back and forth.

Frayed Knot

OK, so how does one "change the configuration"?

KC
Jun 12 2005 09:18 AM

I got rid of the images for today. For some reason, the forum description got
changed, modified, or corrupted overnight anyways. Which I find a little dis-
turbing first thing in the morning, first week into the new joint.

I'm going to the game to un-disturb myself.

I have my monitor set to 1024x768, and I use Mozilla Firefox as my main browser. There is a special add on to firefox called the web developers tool, that lets me change the browser window from full screen to 800x600 with one click. This is especially useful when designing web pages.

You can change your screen area in Windows like this:

On the desktop, right click, and click on "properties" in the menu.
In the Display properties window, click on the "settings" tab
There is a section called "screen area" with a slider that allows you to change how much area you can see on your screen.

Most smaller monitors (15" and smaller) are set to 800x600 - the new systems that come packaged with larger (17"+) monitors are usually set to 1024x768
