Getting peeled garlic without killing my manicure is a wonderful thing!

Mom, you are beginning to demonstrate so many yuppified tendencies that we're beginning to think that you might be a closet Cubs fan.

Here's the test: Do you cringe at the mention of the word "Goat"?

I'm not following your logic 62.

ooh, they make 'em in peeled shallot form, too?

i'd recently discovered the peeled garlic cloves, having previously used a big bad jar of chopped garlic, and a small jar of dried shallots was doing the majority of my shallot-flavor-adding when i didnt feel like peeling and cutting up a whole one.

but peeled and in a jar? hot damn!

We have this great appetizer recipe from The Stinking Rose cookbook, and the most difficult part about it is peeling all of the garlic. It is going to be SO easy to make it now :)

cooby
Jun 10 2005 09:54 AM

Don't you guys have garlic presses?

ScarletKnight41
Jun 10 2005 09:56 AM

This Pampered Chef food chopper is great for all seasons, and much easier to deal with and clean than a food processer.

Garlic presses are ok for small amounts, but not when you're peeling a lot of garlic. And my appetizer calls for a lot of garlic.

Oh! I just remembered I have a Pampered Chef Ice Shaver I should dig out!

I'm reminded of Joe Queenan's thesis that the failure of the Baby Boomer generation was finalized when ordinary guys started discussing their appreciation of the provenance of balsamic vinegar.

ther's nothing wrong with ordinary, manly guys enjoying the delights of the culinary world. and i'll kick your ass if you think otherwise!

I'm down with balsamic vinegar and I'll debate pre-peeled garlic vs. regular garlic (I'll do my own peeling thank you) but I've got to come down on the razor blade over the buzzing electric thing.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 10 2005 11:07 AM

That's fine sharpie. You can come over to my house and peel garlic for me any time you want <g>

Is peeling garlic really that difficult? I use a ton of garlic and I am super lazy. . . it is the chopping I hate. . . but a good garlic press takes care of that for me. Peeling it has never bene an issue . . . unless I had to peel like 20 a night or something.

One blast with the Super Chopper and the garlic is peeled. I don't see what the big whoop is. Of course, we've gotten lazy and use the jar stuff occasionally also.

ScarletKnight41
Jun 10 2005 11:24 AM

This recipe requires A LOT of garlic -

Ah, yes, sauted garlic. I can see that it would.

i use the mysteriously effective but nobody can figure out why Gillette Mach 3 Power razor.

of course, i can only use it every other day, as a) it does such a fine job of cutting really close, and b) i do such a poor job of growing facial hair, that there's just not enough stubble to shave daily without just scraping off perfectly good skin.

its the best manual razor i've ever used - closer than the mach 3, and as close as the shick quattro, but without nearly as much of that pesky razor burn, and teeny tiny cuts.

Finally someone I can ask!!!!

holychicken
Jun 10 2005 11:30 AM

Ah, yes, I see.

Do you eat the sauteed garlic straight up? Actually sounds pretty good. I love garlic.

And marathon, thanks for pointing that out. I have a friend whoworks for gillette and she gave me one for free. I HATE HATE HATE!!! shaving more than anything in the world because i am a perfectionist and my face HAS to be perfectly smooth. Electric razors NEVER get close enough and I have always had a problem with razors giving me too much razor burn. . . but the Mach 3 Power has done wonders for me too.

Like you, I couldn't figure out why. . .I thought maybe it was just psychological. . . but maybe not. . .

It's not exactly sauteed. It's called Bagna Calda -

From THE STINKING COOKBOOK, presented by The Stinking Rose restaurant

Sourdough bread, crackers or bread sticks, and a variety of cooked, sliced vegetables are perfect accompaniments to the sizzling, fragrant oil mixture. For dipping vegetables, we suggest bell peppers, carrot sticks, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower and whole mushrooms. (But feel free to use your imagination!)

Ingredients:

1-1/2 cups peeled garlic cloves
1-1/2 cups extra virgin olive oil
2 oz butter
1 can (2 oz.) anchovies

Preparation:

1. Place all ingredients in oven casserole, cover and place in 275 degree oven for 1-1/2 hours.

2. Serve with bread and cut up vegetables.

cooby
Jun 10 2005 11:32 AM

Sounds very good, actually

ScarletKnight41
Jun 10 2005 11:33 AM

It is. And the only tough thing about it is peeling the garlic.

Until now.

holychicken

Next party I have I am DEFINITELY cooking some of that.

Thanks.

But I think I need to pay my dues and peel my garlic myself.

Johnny Dickshot

Shaving isn't about the razor. I've found that if you use KING OF SHAVES you can shave with a cheap disposable, butter knife or reciprocating saw and still get great smooth chick-attracting results.

Afterward, apply some of this shit and you'll score without even trying:

Johnny Dickshot

It must have some menthol in it or something. It's way xpensive but I got some as a gift from Ms. Dickshot and love it. I'd use a whole tube a day if I could afford it.

I just prepared the Bagna Calda for this evening. The peeled garlic is SO worth it - it changed the prep time from 45 minutes to five!

ScarletKnight41
Jun 24 2005 09:50 PM

Upon review and consideration, the peeled garlic didn't cook as well as the real thing. I still like having it around for having garlic to throw into recipes quickly and easily, but for the Bagna Calda I'll go back to using the real thing.

This is no longer my favorite product.

First of all, it doesn't bake as well as fresh garlic, so it's of no use to that garlic appetizer that we love to make.

Secondly, for the second time in a short period, I bought a container of it, used just a few cloves, and then it went moldy before I got a chance to use it again.

I drank two, and now I'm all jittery.

But I like that Flinstone vitamins/Pez flavor. And after I drink one I feel like I could punch through a wall.

Goes good with vodka for a change of pace cocktail. I call it the Roid Rage.

Edit: A picture of Red Bull, in case the image breaks

Tastes the same as the original, but there is a weird aftertaste. Sip a little water and you're all set.
