KC
Aug 23 2005 07:35 PM

Ok, it's a little premature e-post-alation but I'm bored watching Oakland
sleep, and I don't want to watch the Yanks, and __________________.

STANDINGS: Mets - 5th place, 6 1/2 GB, NL East. Diamondbacks - 2nd place, 4 GB, NL West.

METS PROBABLE STARTER: Victor Zambrano (6-10, 4.24 ERA). Zambrano allowed four runs and six hits over six innings in Thursday's 5-0 loss to Pittsburgh. The right-hander, who had won his previous two decisions, struck out three and walked one. He is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in two career appearances, including one start, against the Diamondbacks. He beat Arizona 2-1 on June 1 at Shea Stadium, yielding a run and five hits over eight strong innings. On the road this year, Zambrano is 3-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 11 starts.

DIAMONDBACKS PROBABLE STARTER: Vargas (7-6, 4.47 ERA). Vargas has allowed five runs and seven hits over 5 2-3 innings in three career relief outings against the Mets. This will be his first start against New York. At home this year, Vargas is 2-3 with a 4.97 ERA in seven starts.

OFFENSIVE LEADERS: Mets - David Wright, .303 avg., 78 RBIs and 74 runs; Cliff Floyd, 27 HRs; Reyes, 45 SBs. Diamondbacks - Green, .293 avg.; Troy Glaus, 26 HRs and 76 RBIs; Gonzalez, 73 runs; Craig Counsell, 21 SBs.

SEASON SERIES: Mets, 3-1.

STREAKS AND NOTES: Mets - RHP Braden Looper has converted 25 of 30 save chances this year. ... LHP Glavine's win Monday was his 272nd, leaving him one short of Red Ruffing for 29th on the career list. ... The Mets lead the NL with 122 stolen bases. Diamondbacks - RHP Brandon Lyon was leading the NL in saves when he strained his right elbow. But since his return from the DL on Aug. 13, Lyon has a 22.09 ERA, allowing 10 hits and nine runs in 3 2-3 innings. ... OF Green is one homer shy of 300 for his career. ... 3B Glaus is 3-for-13 (.231) with a homer in his career against RHP Zambrano.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Mets - 24-35 on the road; Diamondbacks - 27-33 at home.

tonight is the night i find out if i am the grand prize winner of the panasonic hdtv from msg for their "watch and win" contest. i am already one of the 24 finalists and i won an mp3 player.

i dont understand the rotation they are talking about. is the new arrangement that trax and zambrano trade starts as the 5th guy?

ScarletKnight41
Aug 23 2005 09:45 PM

Reyes leads off with an infield single, and Cairo bunts him to second.

Good luck martin, and congrats on the mp3!

i would have liked to see kaz get another start tonight. fran and i agree that he needs confidence.

ScarletKnight41

Reyes is stranded, and we go to the bottom of the first.

World Series kegger at martin's house if he wins! Yeah!

A good job by the Mets to get out of that jam - men on the corners and nobody out!

ScarletKnight41
Aug 23 2005 10:05 PM

Wright singles and scores on a VD triple. 1-0 Mets!

TheOldMole
Aug 23 2005 10:05 PM

Great hustle by Diaz.

TheOldMole
Aug 23 2005 10:09 PM

And Castro comes through - bottom of the Mets order looking sharp.

Oh, and on the Diaz triple - always good to see a feet first slide.

MiniKnight
Aug 23 2005 10:10 PM

It almost looked like Diaz was trying to hold up his swing, even though he made a full one.

MiniKnight
Aug 23 2005 10:12 PM

Two triples in one inning - wow!

MiniKnight
Aug 23 2005 10:16 PM

Look at that - the ball ricochets off the pitcher's leg, completely messing up the timing of the defense. Thus allowing the run to score and the batter to be safe.

I luv # 7, what a joy to watch.

TheOldMole
Aug 23 2005 10:17 PM

Mr. Triple does it again!

Not that far from an inside-the-parker.

And Joel Cairo comes through with an off-the-ankle single...very nice Mets rally here. It's 4-0.

Time to go to the bullpen?

ScarletKnight41
Aug 23 2005 10:19 PM

BEAUTIFUL catch by Floyd!

Mr. Wright hits a long double, then moves to third on a wild pitch.

TheOldMole

Diaz going for the cycle?

Johnny Dickshot

ScarletKnight41

VD's double knocks in Wright.

He's halfway to the cycle (I say that just to fray FK's nerves <g>).

VD scores as Arizona fails to turn the double play. Tony Clark's foot was off the bag. 6-0 Mets!

That's actually the kind booing I approve of.
They're showing displeasure at the lack of effort as opposed to merely the lack of success.

ScarletKnight41
Aug 23 2005 10:46 PM

MK has gone to bed. Because the inning lasted so long, he got to stay up way longer than we anticipated - LOL

And thanks guys - it's good for him to work on his writing skills this way (even when I type, he's thinking out loud). He enjoys being a part of things with the group.

Gonzalez knocks in the first Arizona RBI of the game. Rats :(

Yeah, but I didn't expect it because that's not usually how today's baseball fans are. The fact that Castro beat out a 3-6-3 DP and he's catcher probably added to it as well.

I was angered by the fact that the fans at Shea were booing Benson the other day. Sure, he didn't go a full inning and got pounded, but he's still been a very consistent starter for us this year.

ScarletKnight41

Fans who boo lack of results as if they were promised a particular outcome just plain don't understand the sport they're watching.

here is how i won the hdtv:

during the game one time a few weeks ago they put that message on the screen that says : "text message your first and last name to this number and have a chance to win an hdtv". so i did. then a few days later i watchig the game again and they put four names up on the screen, and mine was one of them. it said "if you are the first of these four to call this number, you win an mp3 player, and a 1 in 24 at an hdtv." so i called, and i was firt, so i won some sort of mp3 player. and then the same thing happened again for 23 other people during met and liberty games on MSG.

and then they drew for the grand prize, which of course i won.

Every time I read another article about yesterday's game I get more excited...not about the 2005 playoff implications, but for the team as a whole in the future. From the Daily News:

]The Mets' sudden youth moment - four players 24 or younger - set the tone as Victor Diaz and Jose Reyes each contributed RBI triples in a four-run second inning, rookie Mike Jacobs swatted a two-run homer in the fifth and David Wright scored three times before Diamondbacks starter Claudio Vargas (7-7) departed.

And we got anudder young'un who has rediscovered himself pitching tonight. Actually, though, I sometimes forget that Seo isn't that young.

In any event, it's an exciting time to be a Met fan.

Bret Sabermetric
Aug 24 2005 02:49 PM

Maybe before I die I'll get to see another young Met promoted to MLB stardom on the basis of ability, and not injury-motivated desperation (or picked up by another team). You'd think someone would have the brains to recognize talent, and the balls to act on it.

I've only got a few more decades left (schlepping this cross is TOUGH!) so maybe not.

Yancy Street Gang
Aug 24 2005 02:54 PM
