Why Petey Should Be President

Reason 1,211:

]HIS DADDY? Pedro Martinez went to bat for Mike Jacobs on Sunday, after the rookie slugged a pinch-hit homer in his first major-league at-bat, then was told he was being demoted to Double-A Binghamton. Jacobs' belongings had been pulled off the team bus bound for the airport, but the decision was soon reversed, though Willie Randolph said Martinez's remarks were a non-factor.

"It's just not right," Martinez said about demoting Jacobs. "I was a victim of that. I did what I was supposed to do and it stayed with me my whole career how I was treated. I couldn't help it. I told Mike and I said it loud. I guess a lot of people heard it....He's got all the tools to be a great hitter - power and without a doubt could be a .300 hitter."

Jacobs showed that power last night with a two-run homer.

That's just so cool. Here's hoping that Petey's as good a scout as he is a pitcher . . .

It's hard to complain about Jacobs so far. Granted, there's no guarantee at all that this will last, but this is the first offensive spark we've gotten out of a first baseman all year, and the Mets have a lot to gain and nothing to lose by riding it.

You know how you can kind of sense how good a player will be just by their name?

Mike Jacobs is one of those good ones.
