The Mets aren;t the only team to go medeival on the Snakes -- they'd coughed up double-digits to Cincy twice over the past weekend, and I believe, 5 times overall in their last seven games. I couldn't care less. Three Augusts ago, I sat at Shea Stadium and watched Craig F. Counsell and the DBaggs murder any last hopes of a stretch run and set into motion the eventual whacking of my favorite Met manager in the Deadly Doubleheader -- the first and only time I walked out of Shea under my own power with a game (Game 2) in progress. If they hadn't had it coming enough, Worrell wussily and obviously drilled Matsui in the 8th last night (2 out, none on). Matsui!?! I suppose the question tonight is not if Pedro sends a f-you card but when and against whom? I'd sure like it to be Counsell.

I'd really prefer the Mets' first concern be to beat the shit out of the D-Backs on the field again, preferably by an even larger run margin than the last two games. Once we're up by a safe margin (what would that be, after last Saturday? 15 runs with three outs to go?) we can think about drilling people.

Hit Gonzo. It sounded like he was the only one trying after the game got lopsided last night--the rest of those schlubs gave up around the 3rd inning. Actually, now that I think about it, if they're as lackluster as they were last night, Petey shouldn't hit anyone. Last thing we want to do is wake them up. If they're content to lie down and take their licking, we should happily go along with it. On the other hand, if they show signs of life early (dropping down drag bunts, coming inside on our batters, etc.), Petey should absolutely put the smack down on them.

Dickshot I remember that series, IIRC it was a four gamer, we lost the Friday night and Mo Vaughn started talking about "must win" games Saturday and Bobby V kinda blew his top over that, the beginning of the end it was.

This is a rough transcript of the conversation between me and my TV that day: Me: Mando, just throw fastballs... no way this guy gets around on a 98 mph heater with that freaking stance. Mando: /throws fastball Counsell: /hits fastball way over outfield fence Me: Shit.

I was at the double debacle myself. I remember baking through two games and not being all that happy afterwards. We stopped being a contender that day. Perhaps we started again these past two days? I remember Fonzie getting a would-have-been GW homer in the 8th inning of game 1, then leaving for a stint on the DL during which the Mets lost 12 straight in his absence. And yet he was the first guy to go. There were so many miscues that first game, but Benitez seemed to get all the blame for both losses, even though he didn't pitch the second one. I remember talking with somebody during the second game, which was John Thomson's first start as a Met. The guy asked what I thought of Thomson, and I said I liked him so far, he was throwing strikes and not fooling around. Then he walked the pitcher to lead off the next inning, and all hell broke lose...

Came as close as I ever got to a Shea Stadium foul ball during the second game of that twinbill. Disgusted and dismayed with the way things were obviously turning, I left my seat and wandered over to the concession behind home plate on the mezzanine level. While I stared at the menu board, Rey Ordonez fouled a ball up the runway which clanked off a trash can and rolled over to some kids standing where I had been maybe 15 seconds earlier. It would've been a cheap way to get a foul but everything about the Mets that afternoon was cheap, save for the nachos. Concession -- a perfect place to be in August 2002.

Rationale for Matsui's plunking... Diaz tagging up when leading by 17 in the 7th ... Randolph said it was probably not hte right thing to do...The lead appeared safe. Teammates mentioned it to Diaz. And there was a sense that the D-Backs had registered their complaint when Tim Worrell hit Matsui, in the right hip, with a pitch in the eighth. Matsui didn't discount the possibility.

hello, this is the team that blew an 8 run lead just a week ago and they're giving out to a young guy for trying to extend a lead? I mean for crying out loud this whole "not the done thing" just doesn't stand up. If a team wants to surrender, they can ask the umps to end the game otherwise I want to score more runs. Now I WOULD stop doing things that would lead to head first slides etc (just to protect from injury) but runs are there to be scored.

It was very nice how the Diamondbacks dropped four straight to the Mets. But now they need to wake up and sweep the Phillies. Go Snakes!
