Reyes boots one. One o' those days.

Frayed Knot
Sep 01 2008 01:26 PM

That was a do-or-die play on a high-chooper to Reyes ... he didn't exactly 'boot' it.

And if it was one of those days the breaks just shifted in our favor as Sheets is mysteriously PH'ed-for in the 5th despite cruising right along.

Gary keeps going on and on about the no-hitter protest thing. I don't see why Yost can't concentrate on winning games and wash his ace pitcher's ball bag at the same time. Don't see the big deal.

Frayed Knot
Sep 01 2008 01:29 PM

I thought Yost's comments were a bit over the top too but, yeah, it's not like he devoted any effort to it other than 10 or 15 minutes after yesterday's game during the Q & A

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Big K for Santana.

Now, it's time to make the donuts, or whatever.

To steal one of Keith Olberman's schticks, our problems so far today:
Worst (tie): Murphy's 1st inning bunt & Reyes's steal attempt
Worster: Wright 1-out/runners-on K
Worstest: Santana's balk

2 relief IPs, 3 pitchers, 7 batters, 1 hit.

So far so good.
Only 1 inning to go ... and how much trouble can they get into in one measley inning?

For as much as we piss and moan about the pen, that eighth was a thing
of beauty.

Time for Wright to wake up here.

"For as much as we piss and moan about the pen, that eighth was a thing of beauty."

Yes it was, which is why giving away outs at the top of the order while trying to pad the lead is so fuckin' frustrating!!!!

Beltran comes out of the game with a bruised knee, thanks to Ed Rapuano.

Lots o' suds for Johan & Carlos and then divvy up a case among a whole ton of relievers.

Meanwhile, we have to worry about Carlos B.

And the Phillies are w/i 3 after a bases loaded walk and then a HBP.

Had cheap seats in this one. Brewers fans were confident and cocky as I was walking into the stadium wearing Mets gear. Lots of shouts about "7 with 17 to go" and such. Picking on Brewers fans is a little too easy, though, when their team hasn't even earned a playoff spot in 26 years.

I was the only Mets fan in my section to start the game and Milwaukee scoring early did not help. A Mets fan and his two daughters showed up in the second and sat in the empty seats to my right. He is from Chicago and has tickets to the Cubs series at Shea in the final week of the season.

It was a beautiful day in Milwaukee and the game breezed by. We were pretty surprised to see Sheets out early. When Murphy batted in the eighth with 2 strikes, the Brewers scoreboard flashed that he is batting 1.000 with 2 strikes this year...a stat I never would have guessed. He continued by hitting a double down the line in left. Delgado hit his HR 2 batters later.

I've never seen a Brewer booed as hard in Milwaukee as Gagne was in the 8th. Milwaukee fans aren't used to paying 10 million per yer to a player, and when they do, they expect him to perform. No Brewers fans mentioned my Mets fandom to me after the Mets took the lead today.

Listened to the Milwaukee postgame on the radio during the drive home and all of the callers blamed Yost for losing the game. They are winning this year, but I get the sense that Yost is not a favorite of the fans in Milwaukee. If for some reason they blow this thing, watch out Ned.

Today was easy...I'm going with 3 Brewers fan friends on Wednesday. It's going to be a long drive home if they don't win with Perez on the mound. My seats Wednesday are below the SNY booth...I'll have to bring some Tootsie Pops for Keith.

Sounds like a fun day!

Miller Park is a nice place to see a game. I'm sure you had a brat with secret stadium sauce.

I saw a funny bumpersticker in Massachusetts last week that was apparently a holdover from last year:

'GAGNE IS A YANKEE SPY'

Checking Baseball Reference, this stat is nowhere near correct...not sure where they got it from Oh well, for that one instance yesterday it was.

The amazing Murphy is able to strike out without ever getting to 2 strikes.

That's why they call them the Amazins!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 02 2008 10:09 AM

Maybe they meant an 0 and 2 count?

12 ABs this year with an 0-2 count, 6Ks.

I can't figure that he would have been batting 1.000 in any of his splits.

But damn, some of his splits are incredible. I know it's a small sample size, but according to his b-r splits page... (all numbers are OPS)

With nobody on base, his OPS is .850. With runners on, it's 1.062. With RISP, it's 1.145.
Close and late: 1.238 OPS.
Game Tied? 6-for-10, 1.392 OPS.

Best when the game is close:
Within 1 R 1.107
Within 2 R 1.044
Within 3 R .943
Within 4 R .925
Margin > 4 R 1.017

"High Leverage" situations? 1.286, as opposed to less than .900 in other spots. (I'm too lazy to do the math)

Innings 1-3 .769
Innings 4-6 .970
Innings 7-9 1.029

Against Starters: around .700 (again, lazy math)
Against Relievers: 1.353

Dang.
