IGT 09/02/08 Mets at Milwaukee; Meet Jon Niese

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 02 2008 02:58 PM

We all know that there have been games when the Mets have inexplicably been stymied by a rookie pitcher that we've ever heard of. (Some will say that that's a particular Mets jinx, but I'm not prepared to jump to that conclusion.)

How nice would it be if today was one of those days for the Brewers?

Tonight Jon Niese becomes the 845th Met. (If all the September call-ups see action, I think the count will advance to 848. That is, if I'm not overlooking anyone.)

Let's hope he puts up 5 or 6 Schaefer points tonight.

Hopefully it's not out of necessity. Both of our other two optios in CF (Endy, Church) are LH hitters.

849, no?
Niese
Parnell
Ramon Martinez
Ricrado Rincon
Al Reyes

Brewerfan.net game thread has the very same conversation happening as you lead with: Major league debut? They got us right where they want us!"

I guess I was overlooking someone. (I'll say it was Rincon.)

That leaves the Mets big off-season acquisition, whoever he may be, poised to be the 850th Met.

Wasn't it someone here that recently posted something about the Mets actually faring relatively well against rookie pitchers?

I think the problem is that we assume we are going to molest them so any non-inappropriate touching sticks out in our minds.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

We are the Knights who say Niese.

metsguyinmichigan

Speaking of Knights, did Brandon get into a second game, or is he capable of a Chan Ho Park one-and-done distinction?

Tatis!!! Tell you what, he's been our least-expected most valueable player. I'm not sure what the criteria to get the Comeback Player of the Year Award is, but he's deserving.

metsguyinmichigan

No bunt opportunity for Neise (for my own selfish pool reasons, I cared)

I think Hamilton's year would have been last year, because he put up decent numbers for the Reds. Good question, though. Hmmmm.

Nope. His start was pretty much an emergency, and was sent packing the next day.

Its a shame GameDay's batters don't match the actual player. Looking at the scrawny batter on the screen, and realizing Fielder is up is pretty funny.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 02 2008 07:13 PM

Cancel must have lost his mind as he gets caught trying to steal second to end the inning. At least Reyes will lead off the 5th. Maybe that was part of the plan all along.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 02 2008 07:16 PM

Cancel has what we used to call "deceptive slow" as opposed to "deceptive speed."

It's not that he's faster that he looks, but that he's not as slow as he looks.

Niese going 2nd & 3rd 0 out for the third time.

SteveJRogers

Getting Figgy with it!

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 02 2008 07:32 PM

Crazy inning.

Beltran really rushed his throw, it almost hit Figgy in the foot and wouldn't have gotten the out if the slide wasn't so pathetic. OTOH, a good throw with a good slide woulda had him by a mile.

Nice job by Figgs all things considered.

Big lead....pissed away. Wonder if Jerry will give more of the recent call-ups a shot to ride this one out. Figgy's a starter, right? He might get some more innings.

Since when is a 4 run lead for the Mets a 'big lead'?

Hey! It's Carlos and Carlos on a bad green-screen Puerto Rico commercial during America's Got Talent!

Rockin' Doc

Damn newbie. Apparently Niese wasn't familiar with the Mets way of doing things. Usually it's the bullpen that squanders the lead rather than the starter.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 02 2008 07:48 PM

Nats aren't helping us tonight.

But I'm still optimistic. Figgy's dealing, and we usually do well against the Brewers.. We're past Sheets and won't face Sabathia.

Of course, we need to get their pitcher to stop hitting doubles....

Weeks busted it out of the box only to make a really shitty turn at first and then drop into a lower gear between first and second. Then he slides feet first but reaches for the bag with his hand. Yost should fine him.

So what did we think of Niese?

Obviously the box score line doesn't look too good. But I saw some flashes of talent and moxie. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him, although perhaps not as a starting pitcher again this season.

My daughter, though, hates Niese's nose. It was all she could talk about every time he was on screen. It didn't look like either of his parents had that nose, so I guess he was the victim of a bad genetic cocktail.
