That's Murphy in LF obviously if Castillo is back in.
You gave me a scare for a minute when I first saw 2B next to his name.

bmfc1
Sep 03 2008 11:13 AM

FK: Thanks. I fixed the LoHud Mets Blog's error... perhaps the reporter was thinking of Murphy's assignment to the Arizona Fall League where he will play 2B.

I am really getting a "good things happen when he's coming up vibe" with Murphy.

HahnSolo
Sep 03 2008 12:14 PM

Murph, Wright, and Delgado with singles in the 1st. 1-0, only one out.

Yeah, a definite Keith Hernandez feeling.

soupcan

Grand Salami Ryan Church!

5-0 Mets.

bmfc1
Sep 03 2008 12:18 PM

WOW!!!

HahnSolo
Sep 03 2008 12:18 PM

A GRAAAAAAND SLAAAAM!

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:19 PM

Schneider back-to-backs 'em!

6-0 Good Guys!

OE: Not b2b. Castillo inserted an out before Schneider popped his.

Crap crap crap miss a few minutes and you miss a lot.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:20 PM

Holy crap, I check in for the first time just a few minutes after the game starts, and I see the Mets put up a 5 in the top of the first! (And still going...)

Methead
Sep 03 2008 12:21 PM

Excellent.

Excellent indeed.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:21 PM

Ollie flies out. To the bottom of the 1st.

Frayed Knot
Sep 03 2008 12:21 PM

Call me a cock-eyed optimist but I'll take that first inning every time.

Know what's kinda kool?

When your pitcher bats before he pitches.

OlerudOwned
Sep 03 2008 12:22 PM

Well now we have to hold the lead for 9 innings.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:23 PM

In Milwaukee, Dave Bush's approval ratings are lower than George's right now.

Centerfield
Sep 03 2008 12:25 PM

Great. Everyone knows we lose these games where we score first and then go to sleep the rest of the game. This sucks.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:26 PM

Perez has already given up a leadoff walk. No cause for alarm, but hanging up a zero here is much better than a 1 or a 2.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:26 PM

And now a single.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:26 PM

Ollie walks Weeks, Hardy singles.

2 on none out for Kapler.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:27 PM

Kapler flies to right. 1 dead.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:32 PM

Inning over no damage.

Still 6-0

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:35 PM

JReyes leads off the 2nd with his 18th triple of the year.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 03 2008 12:36 PM

Let's pound Bush all day long, then "get into the bullpen" if you know what I mean.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:39 PM

Wright's up with one out and a runner on third.

It would be nice to see him get this run home. He hasn't been doing that much lately.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:39 PM

And he doesn't do it this time either. Pop up to first.

Sheesh.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:41 PM

And JReyes is left stranded on third. Oof.

Centerfield
Sep 03 2008 12:41 PM

Reyes stranded. I liked the first inning better.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 03 2008 12:41 PM

Whoa! Six runs in the first?

The issue here will be to keep Ollie focused with that big lead.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 12:48 PM

The Crew goes down in order in the second.

Fman99
Sep 03 2008 12:51 PM

I love the early-innings piling on of runs by the good guys. Day after day they jump out to leads. Good stuff.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 12:52 PM

Beltran singles, Church does the opposite of a grand slam and hits into a dp. Castillo grounds out.

He just doesn't like leaving runners on base.

I think he's the long-lost son of Bristol Palin.

Centerfield
Sep 03 2008 01:09 PM

Bush is only at about 50 pitches in the 4th inning. He gave up lots of runs, but at least he game them up efficiently. He could go 6 or 7 still.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:14 PM

Reyes singles then matches Mookie's career Met record of stolen bases with his 281st.

Sorry - that's 'JReyes'.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:15 PM

Murphy grounds out. Inning ovah.

It'd be nice if the Mets scored again.

He looks like a semi-cleaned-up Geico caveman.

OE: which I guess is appropriate since Tex Cobb was in the movie Caveman.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 01:19 PM

Oliver's thrown 58 pitches through 3 innings.

Hopefully he'll have a few easy innings so that he'll be able to go 7 or 8.

Congratualtions, Jose.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 03 2008 01:29 PM

If Bush hadn't gone all Glavine in the first inning like that, this game would really suck.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 01:36 PM

Perez does seem to be doing a good job of pitching out of whatever trouble he's been getting into. (At least so far.)

A six-run cushion does make that a bit easier.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:38 PM

End of 5.

Still 6-0.

bmfc1
Sep 03 2008 01:44 PM

MGIM: "gone all Glavine"--Love it! A new baseball expression, meaning "giving up multiple runs in the first inning (but not being devastated or disappointed about it)."

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 01:46 PM

85 pitches through 5 for Perez.

Looks like he'll be able to go 6, but I'm still hoping for 7.

With a day off tomorrow 6 might be enough, but I'd prefer to use the bullpen as little as possible.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:53 PM

Dos doubles make it 6-1 Mets with 1 Brewer on and one out.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:55 PM

A walk to Rivera makes it 1st & 2nd, with one out.

Hall at the plate.

HahnSolo
Sep 03 2008 01:55 PM

And a walk. 2 on, 1 out, Hall up.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:56 PM

Hall pops to Schneider. 2 down.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 01:58 PM

Kendall to Beltran.

To the 7th.

Centerfield
Sep 03 2008 01:59 PM

Perez through 6. 6-1. It'd be nice to score like 12 runs here so we can give Stokes and Ayala a little rest.

themetfairy
Sep 03 2008 01:59 PM

Whew!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:00 PM

You're Jerry Manuel: Do you send Oliver Perez to the mound for the 7th inning?

As much as I want to get 7 from Perez, I'm leaning towards no.

HahnSolo
Sep 03 2008 02:02 PM

Yes.
After a baserunner, go get him.

Benjamin Grimm

I'll buy that.

]Last Play: D. Wright struck out swinging, D. Murphy caught stealing, catcher to second

I'd really like to see D. Wright snap out of whatever funk he's in. So far it hasn't really hurt the club, but we can't count on that continuing.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 03 2008 02:10 PM

Ollie's back.

Would be nice to get a look at Rincon, A-Rey or some of the other new guys for the eighth and ninth.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:13 PM

I'd want more than a five-run lead before I mess around with new guys.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:14 PM

Make that a four-run lead as Hardy homers.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:14 PM

Perez still in there, pitching to Kapler with two out.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:22 PM

Kapler walks, but Joe Smith comes in to get the final out.

6-2 Mets after 7. 2 runs, 5 hits, 5 walks, 5 strikeouts for Perez over 6.2 innings.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:23 PM

And 117 pitches.

HahnSolo
Sep 03 2008 02:32 PM

Can we get another run here please?

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 02:34 PM

As if on cue Evans delivers a 2-run sniggle. 8-2 Mets.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:34 PM

Yes we can!

Two, in fact!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:36 PM

Nice job by Mr. Evans!

So far I know that Evans, Church, and Perez will get Schaefer from me. Maybe a couple of others as well.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 03 2008 02:37 PM

Impressive! If you had told me before the season that our best rookies would be Nick Evans and Dan Murphy, I'd have said "Who?"

Kudos to whomever called for the double steal, too!

AG/DC
Sep 03 2008 02:38 PM

Who's coming in?

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 02:40 PM

Duaner.

Howie telling me that they think that Duaner's ineffectiveness was a result of his tipping his pitches.

Problem has been addressed...

Back in '06, Duaner could shout from the mound, "I'm throwing you a curveball" and they still couldn't have hit it -- at least it seemed that way during the first couple months of the season.

That answer is given as a solution to pitching problems far too often to be believable for my tastes.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 02:45 PM

Groundout.
Groundout.
Strikeout.

Proof positive!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 03 2008 02:45 PM

Yahoo GameChannel is telling me that the 8th inning is over after Sanchez got the first two outs.

That's an effective way to 'shorten the game.'

] - R. Cancel catching
- D. Sanchez relieved J. Smith
- C. Hart grounded out to shortstop
- M. Gamel hit for B. Hall
- M. Gamel struck out looking
- End of Inning (0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors)

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 02:48 PM

Top 9 -

Murphy doubles to lead it off, moves to third on a WP.

soupcan
Sep 03 2008 02:50 PM

D.Wright's sac fly plates Murph.

9-2.

Benjamin Grimm

This was a fairly tame game to be at. After the Mets scored 6 in the top of the first, the wind was knocked out of the crowd early and they never got it back.

I had seats right below the SNY and WFAN booths. Got waves from Howie, Gary and Keith after a couple of shouts their way between innings.
