First place Mets vs Fading Fish

Tonight: Oliver Perez, 9-7, 4.00 vs Chris Volstead, 4-3, 3.42
Saturday: Mike Pelfrey vs Ricky Nolasco, 13-7, 3.62
Sunday: Five innings of Pedro + pen vs. Scott Olsen

Mets are of course in first place, the Marlins are 6 games back and just over .500 at 68-66.

Fish facts:

Former Met Mike Jacobs kills us, hitting .323 against the Mets.

Dan Uggla is getting booed by Cubs fans who say his fielding cost them home field advantage in the World Series. Silly Cubs fans. It’s Billy Wagner’s fault.

Hanley Ramirez kicks butt, swiped Jose Reyes’s All-Star Game spot.

Power outage: Marlins led the league with 135 homers in first 95 games, but have ranked 12th since then.

Without Tom Glavine to kick around, they’ll have trouble scoring runs in the first innings.

Familiar faces from across the field: There are a bunch, since they’re one of our main trading partners.

Matt Lindstrom, former Mets prospect
Paul Lo Duca, former Mets hot-head, apparently familiar with ways of the ‘roid.
Jacobs, former Met I kinda like, but like Carlos better
Henry Owens, former Met who we all thought was going to be good, but is hurt.
Carlos Delgado, current Met who spent a year in Miami because Al Leiter is a traitor
Luis Castillo, occasional Met who has a very nice ring.
Ramon Castro, candy ass Met who had some issues in Miami that we can’t talk about
Jason Vargas, injured Met we could have used this year
Moises Alou, oft-hurt Met played one year in Miami, got ring.

Issues with Miami: NEVER take a cab at 2 a.m.

Why I consider the Marlins a worthy second team to like, but not love the way I do the Mets:

-- I was able to attend the team’s first two games!
-- Dolphins Stadium isn’t really as bad as people say it is, considering it’s a football stadium.
-- Dolphins Stadium is kind of like Shea South with all the New Yorkers down there.
--They beat the Yankees in the 2003 World Series, shaping up to be the final World Series game played in that Bronx dump. Oh, the shame! An upstart Marlins celebrating on the hallowed ground while Derek Jeter weeps. Oh, the humanity!
-- They’re kind of like our AAA team, keeping Mikey, Carlos, Paulie, and Leiter warm until they were ready to be Mets.
-- The fired their hotheaded and overrated manager and foisted him off on the Yankees.
-- I had to cover a trial in Miami once and was there for the Marlins’ winter fanfest, which was really cool, offering tours of the clubhouse, lots of inexpensive stuff and even a chance to pose with and touch Jeff Conine’s All-Star Game MVP trophy.
-- They brought back cool vest jerseys, and introduced teal to the Major League spectrum.

I didn't realize Capt. Red-Ass had been picked up by the Marlins till I saw him getting thrown out at the plate last night, going around the dial on MLB EI.
