Who Gets The Call on Sept. 1?

The rosters expand on Monday and I'm trying to figure out who will be wearing the orange & blue (or black, depending on the day). The Mets are very conservative with this and Jerry said that he doesn't like to upset the chemistry in the locker room. (The NO season ended early last night because of Gustav so all should be available right away).

With that, I looked at the 40-man roster and offer these picks (I might have too many pitchers):

Niese (Tuesday's starter)
Knight (from here to Lugo, all have been on the Mets this season)
Kunz
Collazo
Muniz
Lugo
Al Reyes
Rincon (recalled from Mexico for this)
--------------------
Aguila
Molina (you need a 3d C until Ramon returns)
Nixon
Ar. Reyes
M. Anderson

I'd like to see Carp added to bring some pop off the bench but he's not on the 40-man roster.

From what I'd read seems like Muniz, Kunz, Lugo, Collazo are all longshots. Also, Nixon and Aguila.

Definitely Niese, Rincon, Reyes-Ar, Reyes-Al, Anderson. I'm thinking Al Reyes sooner, like tonight, and one catcher but why Molina over Casanova?

Why Cancel over Casanova even?

Nixon will be back, because he's "been there" and "knows what it takes" or somesuch. It's hard to accuse a veteran like him of upsetting the chemistry of a major league locker room.

Thanks for the replies. I forget Al Reyes. I had Ar. Reyes.
I edited the list to reflect this.

Raul's not on the 40-man.

Muniz and Kunz will be back, because it doesn't hurt to bring them up. They're already "on the clock" since they've been up this year, so you might as well add them in.

What about Claudio Vargas and Tony Armas Jr. Are these guys still around? Throw them in the pen. They can't do any worse than the guys we have in there now.

Both are on the DL.

Yeah, though not like losing Molina to take his place is going to be particularly earth shattering. Casanova is out-hitting him by 90 points (though power is similar)

From the LoHud Mets Blog--5 pitchers, 4 hitters (no Nixon):

There may be additions to this list, although assistant GM Tony Bernazard said Fernando Martinez isn’t one of them.

Here are the guys we know who will be in Milwaukee tomorrow:

Jon Niese, LHP — 21-year-old top pitching prospect will make MLB debut Tuesday; 5-1, 3.40 ERA in seven starts at New Orleans; scouting report is 88-92 m.p.h., 12 to 6 curve, pitches inside to RH and outside to LH; likes to compete

Bobby Parnell, RHP — 23, hard thrower, 6-foot-4, has 25 K’s in 23 IP at New Orleans, but hasn’t fared as well as Niese overall; 66 BB in 147 IP this season at Binghamton and New Orleans; 2-2, 6.64 ERA at New Orleans; will probably be slotted into the ‘pen

Al Reyes, RHP — closed for the Rays last year but was released on Aug. 9;

Argenis Reyes, INF — Second baseman was just sent down last week during the series against Philadelphia

Ricardo Rincon, LHP — Mexican leaguer just joined New Orleans; he last pitched in the big leagues in ‘06; will likely assume Scott Schoeneweis’ role for the time being as Schoeneweis battles back problems

Marlon Anderson, INF/OF — you know him, returning from a hamstring injury (he’s actually here in Florida already)

Gustavo Molina, C — a Venezuelan catcher, 26, who batted .206 this year in New Orleans; had 18 MLB at-bats last year with the White Sox; Mets wanted a third catcher

Ramon Martinez, INF — has played in the majors for the Giants, Tigers, Phillies and Dodgers; batted .289 in 53 games with New Orleans

Carlos Muniz, RHP — has shuttled between the majors and minors; 2-4, 3.93 ERA in 18 G at New Orleans this year

Good to see some pitchers coming up. The Mets bullpen can use all the help it can get.

Add Brandon Knight to list of call-ups (Lugo DFA'd to make room).

Apparently everybody is in Milwaukee and ready except Knight and Al Reyes.

The 2005 draft is turning into a nice haul - even though we had no 2nd or 3rd rounders that year
1st rounder Pelfrey is now joined by the 7th round pick Niese, and Parnell from the 9th

I saw Jason Vargas listed on the DL. Did Claudio get hurt too? I remember him being in the discussion when we needed a starter for the game Brandon Knight started.

I think the Mets should start an all-Vargas and Reyes lineup some time this month.

True. It looks like it could be the end of the haul unless one of the catchers --- Butera, Thole, or McCraw --- comes through. I imagine one or two will at least get some coffee. Catching careers are like that.

I guess there's also a chance that Hector Pellot can be resurrected. DJ Wabick also.

Butera's gone, via the Castillo trade.

I wonder if Pedro walked into the clubhouse saw that nameplate above a locker, and said, "Holy shit! Really?"
