Sabathia's Non-No Hitter

Andy LoRoche's 5th inning dribbler to the side of the mound was mis-handled by Sabathia himself and ruled a hit.
It turned out to be the only hit of the game for Pittsburgh in CC's 11-K/3 BB CG win.

Milwaukee is going to appeal to MLB to try and get the official scorer's decision overturned.
Didn't know that was possible.

If you can appeal, then what about Gooden's one-hitter! Knight should have been charged w/an error:

Yup. Damn dribblers.

It's not so much that Knight mishandled it (though he did) but that his shoulder was fried.

Wasn't Maine's no-no spoiled by a dribbler to Wright? He should have thrown it into the stands over first to draw the error.

I was at that game.
My memory of it is that it was an infield chopper which Knight charged but was on the wrong foot to get off a throw and by the time he took that extra step it was too late and so he just ate the ball.

Not played as well as it could have been but certainly not an error.

Today's was MUCH more questionable. CC had time to glove the ball then spin and throw, but he tried to bare-hand it and never never got a grip.
I've heard of appealing to the official scorer to try to get a call reversed but I didn't know there was some league dept you could go to if that didn't work. You can definitely make the case for a error but it would be kind of cheesy to get an after-the-fact No-No that way.

I wonder if anybody's ever deliberately thrown away a ball on a tough play to draw an error and preserve a no-hitter.

CC got to the ball in plenty of time to throw the runner out.
But he mishandled it.
Error all the way.

I remember wishing that Ray Knight had done just that.

Except that if the throw was late (and I think it would have been) it's still an error.

I know. I also would have been counting on a generous official scorer.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Upon further review, the play stands.
Major League Baseball's scoring review committee ruled Wednesday that official scorer Bob Webb did not err when he ruled that Pittsburgh's Andy LaRoche singled against Brewers pitcher CC Sabathia in the bottom of the fifth inning of Milwaukee's 7-0 win.
It was the only hit Sabathia allowed on the soft grounder, that the Brewers ace dropped.

That play could easily been scored an error originally, but it's good that they didn't overturn it.
If you're going to give these scorer's official power to score the games their judgement shouldn't be overturned unless they totally misapplied some rule, and this one in particular would have reeked of doing so just to artificially create "a momnet".

i wouldnt even want credit for a no-hitter retroactively. could you imagine if this were the Mets? the crowd that was there and everyone watching on tv didnt get a no-hitter, went home without a no-hitter... and then they find out on the internet that they got one a few days later. should we go back to the ballpark and cheer? put the pitcher up on Delgado's shoulders and jump around the infield?
no fake moments please.
