Eliminated

When Boston beat Baltimore on 9/1, they eliminated Seattle from wildcard contention. When Washington lost to Philadelphia on 9/2, they eliminated themselves from NL East contention. They are the first teams officially eliminated from the playoffs.

Washington was gone as of 8/31.

The elimination number that CBS Sportsline gives you is a pretty basic equation (magic number) that does not take in to account the games that teams still have remaining against each other.

I'll use the basic definition to keep it easier unless there is a site that can do the full calculation?

I would not be surprised if Colorado--with a load of games v. their weak divisional rivals-- makes another late run

Colorado sucks, and I thought that was crazy talk when I read it, then I went and saw how bad Arizona and LA actualy are.

Pittsburgh, with their loss yesterday.

On the clock (tragic number):
Baltimore (1)
Atlanta (1)
Cincinnati (2)
Kansas City (2)
Oakland (2)
San Diego (2)

I don't know about that site. It says the Padres are eliminated but I looked at the Dbacks and Dodgers schedules and don't think that it's true.

LA plays Colorado 3 more times and San Francisco 6 more times. Arizona plays Colorado 6 more times and San Francisco 7 more times. San Francisco and Colorado play each other 3 more times.

Coming in to today the most wins that San Diego could finish with was 74. There was not a scenario where LA and Arizona lose enough games that they finish with 74 wins where either Colorado or San Fran didn't finish with 75.

Wow. Well done. I looked at the other teams in the west briefly but didn't want to do it all. I'll take your word for it. Fixed above.

Nice Transmonk. I would guess that once the mathematical tragic number gets down to 2 or 1 for the first 5 or so teams eliminated from each league, they've already met their practical demise due to scheduling, etc.

Which means there'll be good seats available when the Mets come down here.

Then again, it could be a playoff series and there would probably be seats available.

Royals also gone. They can win no more than 80 games, and either the Chisox or the Twins will win at least 81.

Texas loses 7 to 1 to Oakland and Boston wins the second of their double header 7 to 5 over the Jays. Texas cannot win the wildcard.

Houston's tragic number is 1 with the Met win today. They'll survive the night since they lead Cincy 7-1, but chasing two teams they probably don't stand a chance.

Other than that we're down to the NL East/Wildcard threesome and the Pale Hose and Carlos Gomez's team.
