Saturday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 79. Breezy, with a southeast wind 11 to 14 mph increasing to between 19 and 22 mph. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between two and three inches possible.

Saturday Night: Rain likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Cloudy, with a low around 68. Windy, with a north wind between 28 and 36 mph, with gusts as high as 47 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between three and four inches possible.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 69.

Based on the above, I'm guessing we'll see a doubleheader on Sunday.

Maybe they'll be able to sneak in a game tonight, otherwise this may end up as a two-game series.

If there's one thing about MLB that bothers me, it's that they don't force teams to play all 162 games.

AT GUNPOINT!

Meanwhile, the Braves at the Fish a few nights ago had 400 people through the turnstiles. Reports said you could hear the catcher's chatter clearly from the pressbox.

They do their best to get a full schedule in. Eventually, you have to let it go. Nobody wants to delay the post-season because the Orioles owe the Mariners a visit.

?!!?

There are 2,430 scheduled MLB games each season and I'd be surprised if they don't average at least 2,425 played each year - and the few that don't get played are usually late-season wash-outs where there's no time (and no reason) to re-sked.

And I had a ticket to Saturday's game.

In 2007 they played every scheduled regular seasons game - plus an extra one for the 'play-in' game between Colorado & SD, and played 2,429 of the scheduled 2,430 in 2006
That's as far back as I felt like checking, but I'm certainly not going to complain if they miss one game in every 5K or so.

In the early decades of the 1900s they used to never make up rainouts and league championships were often decided by narrow margins between teams playing differing number of games.

any game that matters for the playoffs gets made up, thats all i care about. If the Mets sucked one year and a game got rained out with no available makeup day i wouldn't really care, even if i had tickets.

rain check policy is that you can exchange tix for any other available game that season or the next one (or a refund), so what's the beef?

Benjamin Grimm

Looks like they're moving the rain forecast up by a couple of hours. Now they're saying it may start raining at 8 p.m. Makes squeezing in a game a bit more difficult if true.

="National Weather Service"]Tonight:A chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8pm and 10pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 1am. Anyone know if there's a tarp on the field? Based on the weather reports, I'd suspect not.

Rained for a while overnight but now is just cloudy, humid and soupy.
Sounds like it's going to be off and on for this afternoon eventually getting steadier, harder & windier as it gets later and into overnight.
If this were a 1:00 game they might get it in but probably not with the 3:55 start.

Leftover stuff Sunday morning but should be gone in time for the likely 1:00 / 8:00 DH

What this is really going to screw up is the tennis.
Saturday is their big day: both Men's semis then the women's final - all starting around 11 AM
Good luck with that!

From MetsBlog:

Today’s game against the Phillies has been postponed due to the imminent storm.

There will in fact be a day-night doubleheader tomorrow, with today’s game being rescheduled for 2:15 p.m.

Tickets for today’s game will be honored at the afternoon game.

So what network airs this game? Hopefully it's SNY.

The weekend games on CW11 usually get piped in by Time Warner up here on an unused local access channel (like last night), but generally they only do that if they are already on the schedule.

Good seats still available for tomorrow's makeup game. I got Upper Box seats behind home plate just over 24 hours prior to game time.

The real heavy stuff started falling right about at what would have been first pitch.
Nice that they actually made the smart call by canning the game early this AM.
Dodgers/Snakes game being show instead.

The tennis found an interesting way to deal with the weather.
The mens' semis were supposed to be consecutive, around 11AM and then about 2PM. But instead they used seperate courts to run them concurrently (with about a one hour stagger) in order to beat the rain.
It actually kind of sucks for those who bought tickets expecting to see both matches. I guess you got your choice of either/or but I doubt they worked any refund into that.
CBS then maintained a news blackout on the 2nd semi while they were showing the first so they could then show #2 right afterward under the "plausibly live" method (to borrow Dick Ebersol's phrase from his Olympic telecasts).

They didn't get the full 2nd semi in, but at least they don't have to start from scratch when they pick it up tomorrow. Guess they'll push the final to Monday.
The women's final was to be a seperate admission deal at night and I assume they've already pushed that until tomorrow.

Latest forecast for tonight and the weekend:

="National Weather Service"]Late Afternoon: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 70. South wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight:
Rain, mainly before 2am. Low around 66. South wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday:
A slight chance of showers after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Southwest wind between 8 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 86. West wind between 8 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Looks like Saturday's game is in the least jeopardy. It also looks possible that all three games will be played without delay or rainout.

Let's hope so anyway. There are no more open dates on the Mets schedule.

I read that forecast as saying that tonight's game might -- at worst -- have a short delay, or some drizzle, but nothing to prevent the game from happening.

Too early to tell on Sunday but I think they get all 3 in.

If you are the Mets management, would you cancel games to rest the pitching?

What do you think they would do?

I remember when he came up and led the Milwaukee Braves to the pennant. He hit over .400, and then was basically gone the next year.
I'm hoping Daniel Murphy doesn't have a similar career.

I guess this is the official thread now?

1. It's still too close to call whether we get the game in tonight. The rain has stopped here in midtown for now, but the forecast still calls for a 90% chance of preciptation tonight. Whether we play is entirely dependent upon the pattern of the storm approaching from the south. It may well pass to the east of Queens and allow the game to get in. I think we play.

If we don't, we would almost certainly play a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mets would certainly prefer to do the game as a separate-admission DH, with the tickets from Friday night being valid for a game to be played probably at 7:10 or 7:40. To do this, they'll need a waiver from the player's union, as the CBA limits the number of day/night DHs that can be played per team, per season.

Playing a single-admission doubleheader on Saturday might be preferable for the players but would leave a *lot* of ticketholders from Friday's game angry, especially given that
1. They cannot exchange for a game this season, as Sunday is sold out and Saturday's is pretty well sold too
2. Despite stated policy, they cannot realistically exchange for a game next year, as the Mets don't know what ticket availability will be.
3. It'll be the last game at Shea for many.

Hence the separate admission doubleheader being extremely likely, IF we don't play tonight.

I predict we *do* play tonight (reserving the right to re-evaluate at 4 PM).

HahnSolo
Sep 26 2008 11:06 AM

As a ticketholder for tonight, I hope they can make an announcement of a postponement as soon as possible.

Gwreck
Sep 26 2008 11:08 AM

I would count on *exactly* the opposite. I suspect they'll wait as long as possible before calling it.

Here's the latest:

="National Weather Service"]Late Afternoon: Rain likely. Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 67. East wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight: Rain likely, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after midnight. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog. Low around 65. East wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 75. East wind between 9 and 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between one and two inches possible.

Saturday Night: Showers, mainly before midnight. Low around 66. East wind between 7 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. North wind between 8 and 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Maybe they can play a tripleheader on Sunday.

And here's what they have for Philadelphia:

="National Weather Service"]
Late Afternoon: Periods of rain. High near 70. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Tonight: Periods of rain, mainly after 3am. Low around 64. East wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday: Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 75. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 66. East wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Northwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

And, to be fair to the team, they really have to do that this weekend.
Too often in the reg season they fail to call games early on account of some vain hope of not losing a couple of bucks. In this case I'm not going to hang them for that.

An awful scenario is out there (forgive me) where the Mets could lose games one and two, the Brews and Phils sweep games one and two, and the final game at Shea could be rained out.

And it would be just as well, because they'll burn the place down on Saturday anyhow.
