Does he still work for this team or what?

TransMonk

He was in Milwaukee.

Kinda big series here.

Agreed, but I'm not necessarily missing him tonight.

Ronnie's holding his own.

When Ron is not working in the booth he is in the studio , get in there Mex

Don't begrudge him. Dude has a sweet gig.

Doesn't Keith need to physically be in Florida over 6 months of the year for tax purposes?

Doesn't seem like he's around for two-thirds of the season as it says here:

More Ralph. More Ralph. More Ralph.

He's really only missing one game here seeing as how both Saturday's & Sunday's games are network jobs.

And, yes, there is a stipulation that he spend X number of days per year in Florida in order to claim tax-exempt residency there. But between the off-season, Spring training, and road games @ Marlins I think that takes care of most of it and he's probably just spending the weekend slumming on the east end.

Hernandez, like Tattaglia, is a pimp.

Thank you.

And it's not like he "needs" to be anywhere. That's his gimmicky tax shelter and there's only so much indulgence he's entitled to.

Prediciton: SNY lands a third jock next year to cover for Keith during his frequent vacations.

Second prediction: Impressed by the MbtN features he shot, as well as his Blue Hen journo degree, SNY signs Lunchbucket for sideline duty.

Let's hope not.

Ron = fantastic.

The way SNY has it now:
- about 1/3 of the games w/Keith & Gary
- about 1/3 with Ron & Gary
- and about 1/3 with a 3-man booth
is not only fine with me but probably exactly how they want it. Not sure Keith for 162 is such a great thing anyway.

IOW, no need for a 4th unless either a game of bridge or golf breaks out.

Agreed. Besides, you run the risk of Keith getting snippy if you "replace" him when he's not there. Considering how often this organization seems to irk old friends, let's keep Keith around.

I concur. It's a great setup -- variety is the spice of life as they say.

You really think Ron gets as much time off as Keith?

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 08 2008 08:35 AM

It seems to me that Keith is away more often than Ron, but I don't really know for sure.

Ron does seem more engaged, while Keith gives the feel that he's making a special guest appearance. But perhaps that's because he's frequently talking about how he'd prefer to be somewhere else.

Yes. It's just that a portion of Ron's non-game days he's in the studio. Keith's off-days are really off-days.

I think Keith is richer than an astronaut and does games for fun. Ron to me seems more career-minded, if you will, in the broadcast game.

Watching via mlb.tv, I get way too many out-of-town crews. I get the Mets crew for a big series, and I get no big-mouthed Keith.

Exactly. I think it has been mentioned elsewhere, but Ron is also working as lead (?) analyst for TBS for their Sunday national broadcasts and I assume will be for the division series/LCS this year as well, unless his SNY contract takes precedence.

Which underscores that there's no post-season for Kiefer, so this is his highest-impact time.

As a kid I remember choosing between watching Yankee post-season games on PIX with the local Yankee guys (if memory serves it was Rizzuto / White) or NBC with Garagiola and Scully maybe?

That'd be cool if it were still like that and we could watch Gary Keith and Ron on SNY do postseason Met games.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 08 2008 09:18 AM

The problem with that is that the network would get fewer viewers in the home markets of the participating teams, and that's their most fertile soil.

AG/DC
Sep 08 2008 09:25 AM

We're lucky that it took them until the eighties to figure out that exclusive rights to the hometowns is the way to go.

Maybe they can come around to letting the local guys do their own broadcassts, but sticking them on the network and delivering that to the local audience. They can plug in FOX's ads and even promise to plug FOX's crappy shows.

Keith said last night that after the FOX game Saturday that he will be doing all the games for the duration of the season , as will Ron.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 11 2008 02:37 PM

Yes. It's a three-man booth the rest of the way.

I'm glad they'll both be there for the last game at Shea. (I would have expected it anyway.) I'll probably TiVo that one and then burn it to DVD to keep for posterity.

I'm sure SNY will carry all of the various ceremonies, whatever form they may take.

Unless Beer Money, Heartland Poker Tour or the Jets postgame show is scheduled.
