Going to the Game (the final '08 thread)

Sep 06 2008 02:00 PM

I've been meaning to start a thread about a last regular season game at
Shea tailgate party -- and I will post about that here next week.

BG: (from the weather thread) Good seats still available for tomorrow's makeup game. I got Upper Box seats behind home plate just over 24 hours prior to game time.

I got a great Loge Box seat to replace my Loge reserved seat I can't use for
the night game. Not the most economical thing I've done this week, but I want
to go to as many games as possible before *sniffle* they tear the joint down.

If anyone wants to meet up at the afternoon game for a half-hour or so and
have a beverage post here or email/PM me or whoever. Also, if anyone is
going to the afternoon game and would like a good single ticket in the Loge
Reserved for the 2nd game lmk ... free to a good CPFr.

Team wasn't the only thing sucking at Shea this afternoon.

They have Will Call windows at Shea and a Will Call drop off window and you
can leave tix for people to pick up. I went to the drop off window before game
one to leave a ticket for the night game and they wouldn't freakin' take it.

"Only tickets for this afternoon sir, come back after the game and you can
drop it off then."

Go back after the game and the drop off window is closed along with all the
will call windows except for one and she tells me she couldn't take it to come
back at 6:30 when the drop off window opens. It was like 5:05!?!

I asked her why they make everything so difficult and unleashed a good minute
or so at her with anger laden nonreciprocating love issues I have with my baseball
team and stormed off before she could hit the "send security please" button.

It's a fucking piece of cardboard for a game the same day just not the af-
ternoon game. Take the piece of cardboard and put it with all the other nice
pieces of cardboard and be done with it.

Why bust balls? I'm still fucking livid.

Going this afternoon, will be the one with a finger in the air searching for a ticket outside the stadium actually, the Mets had some decent single tickets available.

I'm going to be in DC for a conference Thursday and Friday - will be arriving Wednesday afternoon and have tickets to the Wednesday night game (Sec. 132, Row JJ). May try to get day-of-game tickets for Thursday if I can get away from the conference early enough.

Any interesting things to know about Nats Park? Any weird restrictions on what can be brought into the stadium?

Any recommendations for dinner in the area?

I should be there on Sunday, but be warned, my little voice recorder will be with me, and I may approach some at the tailgate for a few words to say for my blog. And for purposes of the blog I will use Cranepool Forum handles.

And don't worry, I won't be debating the merits of Rivera, Jeter, Paul O'Neill or anythingelse that will continue the use of my derisive nickname!

ML: you can bring in only one closed bottle per person of a clear liquid. Other than that, anything goes. There aren't great food options in the area but the choices in Nats Park are excellent. I recommend Ben's Chili Bowl, 3B side, field level.

Psst, Kase, I was referring to Sunday the 28th, sorry for the confusion bud. Don't worry, I'm not heading to an empty Shea Stadium parking lot right now!

Steve - just make sure that people want to talk before turning on the recorder.

Well that was an interesting day yesterday.

Sweltering. My three kids (11, 9 & 7) melting in the heat. Would've left in the 3rd inning if there wasn't the promise of running the bases for the kids afterward.

The kids were dying so about the 4th inning we got up and just walked around the stadium. Went all the way to the upper deck in right field and sat down in the last row for about an inning and a half. It was shady and there was actually a nice breeze blowing around up there. We saw Wright's second homerun from up there and it was a great angle.

Once the shade covered our regular seats, we moved back down. The kids however were so enamored of the view from up top they asked if we could see more games from up there. Arrrgh. My whole Met fan life I sat in the upper deck and the mezz. I finally position myself into great field level tix and the kids like the whole 'microscopic-players-look-like-ants' perspective. I have to say though, after years of not being able to get the whole field view, it was fun seeing it again.

So its a long game and although the sun was now not a factor the humidity was still a killer. The Mets of course did not cooperate and get us out of there quickly, turning the 9th inning into a marathon. Finally the disaster ends and we head out to Gate A for the Dyna-Mets Dash.

Oh, yay - the line for that is literally completely around the freaking stadium (thanks for the heads-up fairy)!

We blow that off and get in the air-conditioned mini-van for the long depressing ride home. Oh yes, they'll remenmber their last game at Shea forever.

Sep 15 2008 10:31 AM

Hey - this was the first time in a couple of years that we've been around to do the dash. The line was, indeed, long, but it moved pretty quickly once it got started. You shoulda stayed.

Quick note on tailgate gathering for Sunday: if anyone wants to meet up be-
fore the game please contact me at the email address above (I prefer email
to PM's) and I'll send you the coordinates.

It's pretty much Bring Your Own Everything although there will be fire
available. Fire, fire's cool.

Recording devices for purposes of interviewing tailgaters is discouraged. Take
a quick shorthand course this week if you plan on interviewing tailgaters :-)

Hey I'll be there Wednesday too -- Silverman has sum picnic area tixx left last I heard, tell 'em I sent ya!

Gwreck
Sep 23 2008 01:05 PM

Sorry that we'll be missing the picnic thing -- but we'll wave to you in the bleachers from our seats.

Was there last night and am going to all of the remaining games this year. I expect to be either incredibly excited for the postseason or insufferably cranky. There will be no in-between.

seawolf17
Sep 23 2008 01:37 PM

Apparently, we'll be somewhere in the loge boxes.

I'll be there Friday night.

Kong76
Sep 23 2008 02:56 PM

We're going to the picnic game Wed too. According to Silverman's site,
the picnic area doesn't open until 6? Anyone know or remember if you
can still get to the picnic area from the regular stadium seats in case we
want to wander in earlier as we're probably going to show up early?

Anyone have any experience parking at the Stamford, CT Metro North station? I'll be in Fairfield County visiting high schools all day Wednesday and Thursday, so it's easiest for me to hop on a train up there.

Kong76
Sep 23 2008 05:28 PM

Stamford's a pretty big station. I haven't done it in awhile, but a number of
times I've driven there from central Westchester and left our car there over-
night taking the Amtrak to Boston and never had a problem.

Iubitul
Sep 23 2008 05:35 PM

Seawolf - I haven't parked there, but maybe South Norwalk will be easier for you? I'm jumping on the 1:40 out of South Norwalk, and meeting up with g-fafif at GCS...

seawolf17
Sep 23 2008 05:54 PM

Hmm. That would work, but I probably won't get out of Stratford until 1:30ish at the absolute earliest (my visit is at 1:15). That'd be cutting it pretty close to catch that train. I don't want to hold you guys up, though.

Unless I hopped on at Stratford...

But I'm staying in Danbury tomorrow night -- easiest to hop on 7 and head up that way, so South Norwalk makes sense. But there's no way I make the 1:40, so it'd have to be the 2:40.

That's why I originally picked Stamford; seemed to be more trains there, going and coming back.

I'll PM you my cell; maybe we'll just try to catch up at the game.
