Knicks suck again, 2008-09

I don't think there's a '08-'09 thread ...

Was this a joke? I mean it's in the NY Times .... Frederic Weis rights???

Knicks Stir Ghosts From Their Past by Acquiring Ewing Jr. From Rockets By HOWARD BECK

If symbolism alone could change the Knicks’ fortunes, then the minor trade they made Friday would make them instant contenders.

In a deal with the Houston Rockets, the Knicks acquired Patrick Ewing Jr. — the son of one of their greatest players — in exchange for the rights to Frederic Weis, a towering symbol of the franchise’s decline.

A former star at Georgetown, Ewing shares his father’s name and college pedigree, but not his athletic prowess. He will be a long shot to win a roster spot when the Knicks hold training camp in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in October.

A 6-foot-8 forward, Ewing was drafted in the second round, 43rd over all, by the Sacramento Kings in June. He was sent to Houston as part of the Ron Artest trade earlier this month. The Knicks now have 16 players under contract, one more than the maximum.

Weis, a 7-2 center from France, never wore a Knicks uniform after being taken with the 15th pick in the 1999 draft. Fans never forgave the Knicks for drafting Weis while Artest, a native of Queens, was still on the board. Artest is now one of the N.B.A.’s best defenders; Weis is mostly remembered for being dunked on by Vince Carter at the 2000 Olympics.

So in one move, the team president Donnie Walsh stirred memories of better times and chased off a ghost. Whether it amounts to mere symbolism or good karma remains to be seen.

I'm kind of amazed they still had Weis's rights. It's been almost a decade.

Former New York Knicks coach Isiah Thomas was taken to White Plains Hospital Center today after overdosing on sleeping pills, WABC-TV reported, citing police and unidentified people.

Police were called to Thomas's house in Harrison, New York, just after midnight for a report of a possible overdose of a 46-year-old male, WABC-TV reported, citing police sources. The former NBA basketball player and coach is 47, the network said.

The incident is being treated as an overdose and not a suicide attempt, WABC-TV said, citing police. Officials with the Knicks would tell the network only that Thomas is fine.

they've released Grunfeld and Houston, picked up the contracts on Collins and Chandler (for `09-`10), and benched Curry. Gallinari is starting to practice. Crawford has been inexplicably awful, giving Marbury time with the starting unit.

Projected rotation:
starters: Duhon / Marbury / Chandler / Randolph / Lee
Rotation: Robinson / Crawford / Q-Rich / Rose
bench: Collins / Roberson / Curry / Ewing (?)
IR: Gallinari / James / Jeffries

I'm not sure what the status is of Ewing, jr. If he's still on the roster, they're still 1 man over the limit.

Valadius
Oct 27 2008 11:22 PM

Because he's good in a pinch. Brings a burst of energy onto the court. And because we're so loaded down with shooting guards, keeping Roberson over him boggles my mind.

metirish
Oct 28 2008 08:05 AM

Most everything I have read about Ewing Jr is that he doesn't fit into the coaches plans becasue he can't shoot. This team doesn't need to be trading in sentiment , no Ewing and no Houston.

Vic Sage
Oct 28 2008 10:27 AM

not everyone has to shoot. somebody has to play with energy, and defensive tenacity, and size.

It seems to me that we're keeping Roberson (what has he ever done, exactly, except get an $800k contract out of the knicks based on a handful of summer league games?) and James (who still has 2 years left on his ridiculous Isiah contract) purely for contract reasons.

But the Knicks shouldn't be holding on to guys just because they have bad deals. Those contracts should be viewed as sunk costs, and then you move forward with the best 15 guys you can find.

Junior can't shoot, but he's athletic, big, strong and tenacious. You need guys like that on your bench.

metirish
Oct 28 2008 10:55 AM

I can't say I know much about any of them , I saw Ewing bringing the energy against the Nets , is that his game ?

I read today that D'Antoni is a big backer of Roberson , compared him to Eddie House , is that a good thing?

Vic Sage
Oct 28 2008 01:07 PM

I guess that means D'Antoni sees Roberson as a guy who can come in off the bench and hit a bunch of 3s. But with 6 other guards on the roster, I just don't see him getting any more playing time than he did during the pre-season (ie, next to none).

whereas, due to Jeffries' injury and Curry's uselessness, we've now got Malik Rose getting time, and i'd much rather see Junior in that role.

What would he need to do though to get suspend without pay , punch a coach or something worse?

It's hardly news now that his team mates don't like him , D'Antoni talked about the future when asked about Steph and Curry. Personally I wouldn't care if I didn't see wither of them play this season.

Curry being "stunned" to find out for the media that he is not even in the rotation says it all for me about him , I suppose the coach should have told him but Curry is one lazy fucker.

Vic Sage
Oct 30 2008 11:09 AM

Yes, I guess a good old fashioned Spreewellian spree is what might be needed to get out from under the contract... and Starbury's just the sort of loose cannon who might go there, if he stays chained to the bench.

Or maybe he just stops showing up, and they start docking him.

However, i still think he's a better player than Collins and the team would be better off, at least this year, if he got minutes over lesser players. I don't think Collins will EVER be worth the minutes, so his development is not worth sacrificing minutes for, much less games, now.

Tabloid fodder after one game.

] D'Antoni says he didn't curse out fans BY ALAN HAHN | alan.hahn@newsday.com 3:30 PM EDT, October 30, 2008 GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Welcome to your first tabloid firestorm, Coach. It only took one game. Mike D'Antoni on Thursday admitted he did hear the chant of "We Want Steph!" from a section of the sellout crowd at the Garden in the second half of Wednesday's season-opening 120-115 win over the Miami Heat. But while television replays showed D'Antoni yelling, "Are you f--- kidding me?" toward the crowd, what is unclear is if he was directing his anger at the chanting fans -- who were calling for benched guard Stephon Marbury -- or the referees. "I just thought they didn't quite get it, but they're great fans and they're into it," D'Antoni said when asked about the situation. "It's almost like on draft night, no matter who you draft they're going to boo because there's somebody the fans like and somebody they don't ... You'll hear it from the people that don't and that's OK. It's no big deal." Last season Isiah Thomas was caught in the crosshairs when he jawed with fans near the Knicks bench and scolded them for not supporting the team. Thomas was the target of the fans ire for the entire season. D'Antoni, however, heard one of the loudest cheers from the crowd during pregame introductions on Wednesday night. And a majority of the fans seemed to agree with his decision to leave Marbury on the bench for the entire game. But late in the third quarter, with the Knicks ahead by 23 points, some fans in the upper bowl started a chant of "We Want Steph!" After a few attempts, the chant was overcome by loud boos from the rest of the sellout crowd. But the moment that involved D'Antoni came with 11:10 left in the fourth quarter and, it should be noted, after a foul was called on Mardy Collins. The Knicks were leading at the time, 93-77, and the big lead was already starting to slip away. A reporter from ESPN Radio said there was also video evidence that D'Antoni added, "What a bunch of a---." Newsday can only confirm D'Antoni's first comment. After D'Antoni addressed the media immediately following practice, he came back a short while later to re-address the issue and said his words were not directed at the crowd. "There's no way I would do that to the fans," he said. D'Antoni then went on to explain that he "coaches with passion" and can get caught up in the emotions of a game and regrettably let out expletives. "If y'all are going to read my lips during the game there is a lot of stuff I'll be saying that, probably I'll have to be like a football coach," he added while he covered his mouth with a piece of paper. "We'll do that for now on, if that's news. "I'm really happy the way the team responded and the crowd was fantastic last night. I thought it was a great opening night. That should be the story ... There will be times when I lose it. And that's from adrenaline and wanting to win so much. There was no way I had any animosity toward anybody. I thought the fans were great last night. But it's not always going to be great and not always going to be fun and roses, but I'm really not going to get into, 'Well, you might have said something and I read your lips and I overheard somebody say ... You know, guys, we just played a really good game and I'm really happy with the fans. The atmosphere was great and they can expect more of the same. And we're going to go into the Garden and hope it's rocking and I know they'll support the team and we'll support them and go forward."

The seasons not even a week old and is fast becoming a joke , resolution is needed on Marbury but it seems the GM and the coach are not on the same track with this , Walsh says he doesn't know why Marbury is not playing.

] "The issue is he's not playing and you guys are asking me," Walsh told reporters. "I want to understand why and I want (to ask) our coach (why). If he's got valid reasons, that's one thing. If not ... that's what we're talking about."

its very irritating. Frankly, Starbury is handling it better than D'Antoni and Walsh. Stephon's playing it cool and calm, while Mike the savior is cursing out the fans in the stands, and Walsh is scratching his head in confusion.

Collins doesn't deserve minutes. Duhon is a backup at best.

Marbury should be playing, with Robinson as a swing G, and Duhon the 4th G off the bench. Collins should be on the bench, Roberson should be cut, and Ewing re-signed.

] Harrington's contract, which pays him $9.2 million this season, expires by the Summer of 2010, which is when the Knicks hope to make a major run at high-end free agents such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and others. Crawford, who had been leading the Knicks in scoring this season with 19.6 points per game, makes $8.6 million and has a player option that extends his contract two more years for a total of $19.4 million. The trade essentially saves the Knicks $10.08 million in 2010-11. The Knicks are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday. Randolph's contract also extends two years and $34 million after this season. If the Knicks can move him for contracts that expire by 2010, it will save them another $17.3 million on the 2010-11 payroll.

they dressed 8, but only played 7. Marbury never got off the bench. I'm not sure what the point of that is, except that D'Antoni doesn't want to have to deal with the issue that would arise if Marbury actually played WELL.

i hate Tim Thomas. Mobley is 1-dimensional. Harrington has got injury history. But none of that matters, since this is all about cap space. We weren't going to be more than a .500 team anyway, so this is an ok move, as far as i'm concerned.

] Source: Concern over Mobley's heart holds up Clippers-Knicks deal By J.A. Adande ESPN.com Updated: November 25, 2008, 2:33 AM ET Zach Randolph was in the Los Angeles Clippers' locker room Tuesday night. He just wasn't in a Clippers' uniform, as the trade between Los Angeles and the New York Knicks was held up by what a source said were concerns about Cuttino Mobley's heart. Cuttino Mobley Mobley Mobley and Tim Thomas were sent to New York in exchange for Randolph and Mardy Collins on Friday in a deal that gives the Clippers a low post presence in Randolph and gives the Knicks more cap space for the 2010 free-agent market. Mobley's and Thomas' contracts expire before the 2010 season. The source said Mobley would see a heart specialist on Tuesday. Normally players have 48 hours to report to their new teams and take a physical examination, followed by another 24 hours for all the test results to come in. Because this trade was completed after business hours on Friday, the teams agreed to an additional 24-hour period, which ends at 6:30 p.m. ET Tuesday. When asked about ESPN.com's report by reporters after the Clippers game on Monday, coach Mike Dunleavy said: "From the standpoint of Cuttino's concern, there's nothing they have or don't have that hasn't been known to us or hasn't been approved by us and all the other teams he's played for. Neither one of those guys has had any issues with any of the things that are even being talked about. "All I know is that if Cuttino has anything, he's been asymptotic," Dunleavy said. "He's never had any issue with us. There's never been one time that he missed a practice or missed a game or had any issues in any physical of any kind for us. I mean, I've been told by our doctors that the things that are under concern is not something that we haven't known about or have had any issues with. So hopefully, it won't be an issue." Another source told ESPN.com that Mobley's condition has been present throughout his career and has never been a grave concern, although the Knicks were prudent in their diligence. On the surface it would be hard to imagine the Knicks wanting to void the trade because they achieved their goal of clearing Randolph's contract (which carried two more years and $33.3 million after this season). The franchise already took on Eddy Curry in a trade with the Chicago Bulls despite concerns that were raised about the center's heart. As for fear of paying a possibly inactive Mobley, who makes more than $9 million both this season and the next, it hasn't stopped them from keeping Stephon Marbury anchored to the bench despite a salary of almost $22 million. The Clippers would like to move forward with a full complement of players. They'd also like to explore tinkering with their roster, which would feature an abundance of starting-caliber big men in Randolph, Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby. One source said the Clippers are talking to the Charlotte Bobcats about a package that would send Kaman to Charlotte for Jason Richardson. However, another Clippers source said, "Kaman's not out there.

]CLIPPERS FYI Randolph and Collins officially join in PETER FOLEY / EPA The two newest Clippers, traded by the Knicks, take part in practice -- and a yoga session. By Mark Medina November 26, 2008 Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins officially became part of the Clippers just in time to join their new teammates in a yoga session Tuesday. "I've got to get my body used to that again," said Randolph, who said he had yoga sessions when he played for the Portland Trail Blazers. "We didn't do that in New York. I'm going to stick with it so I can be more flexible." Consider the yoga class their first step in becoming acclimated with the Clippers. On Tuesday afternoon, the Knicks finalized a trade that sent Randolph and Collins to L.A. for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. The Clippers initially hoped Randolph and Collins would play in Monday's game against New Orleans, but the Knicks held up the deal over concerns about Mobley's heart condition. Clippers assistant general manager Neil Olshey said New York came back to ask for more. "The Knicks felt like there were complications that they weren't privy to. They felt like something additional on their behalf was warranted," Olshey said. "We're not willing to give up any of our young assets or any of the tools we have going down the road," so the original deal went through. Assistant coach Kim Hughes ran Tuesday's practice because Coach Mike Dunleavy flew to Dallas for his father-in-law's funeral. Randolph will play 30 to 35 minutes in tonight's game against the Denver Nuggets, Hughes said. Randolph and Collins spent Tuesday's practice shooting and playing four-on-four "I'm going to go over individually with them our defensive coverages," Hughes said. "Zach knows how to score in any system, but he needs to know our defensive coverages." Randolph averaged 20.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in 11 games for New York. The Clippers hope he will complement forward Marcus Camby and center Chris Kaman.

<b>Report: Marbury's second refusal to play will lead to his departure</b>
ESPN.com

Stephon Marbury will soon either be ordered to stay home indefinitely or be released by the New York Knicks, a source told the New York Daily News.
Marbury again declined to play Wednesday night against the Pistons, the second time he had done so in six days. The same source told the Daily News that Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni considered sending Marbury home that night.
The Knicks are down to two healthy guards -- Chris Duhon and Anthony Roberson -- after Nate Robinson missed Wednesday's game with a groin injury and Cuttino Mobley has not yet been cleared by team doctors.
Marbury is one of the league's highest paid players and is scheduled to make at $20.8 million this season.

I don't really watch the NBA anymore and this thread is a good example of why. There are too many prima donna thugs around the league for my taste. It seems to me that a team should not have to play a player that refuses to take the court and play. Marbury should have to forfeit a large chunk of his contract in my opinion, but I imagine that the player uniion will see it quite differently.

agreed 110%, i'd like to see someone here show up for work and say "gee boss, i don't really want to print out that report, i want to email it to you, i refuse to print it and i'm going to sit on my ass until you give in." The Knicks should offer him playing time in writing, and then when he refuses they should release him, refuse to pay him, and try their luck in court.

I don't condone Marbury's actions in any way, but these Knicks are the perfect organization for a fuck-up like him.

As far as I can tell, their stance on Marbury so far has been:
Be a good teammate and don't play. Stephon was a bad teammate because he wouldn't play. So we'll teach him a lesson by suspending him.

A "good teammate" is one who does whatever the coaches want when they want it and keeps his mouth shut.

Sure. But I wonder what grounds a team has to cast blame for not being a good teammate after they have told the player "We don't want you. The best thing you can do is go away quietly while we figure out how much of your salary we can wiggle out of."

In other words, I think Marbury could fire right back at them "I may suck as a teammate, but you guys suck as a team."

I don't mean to imply that Marbury has no duty, I'm saying that the team loses its credibility.

I would also put out there that punishing the player that refuses to play by suspending him seems counterproductive.

In his position, I'd be increasingly suspicious that I'm being set up to fail (or be humilated), and might be tempted to be un-cooperative.

Exactly. If the Knicks were a husband, they would wake up in the morning, clear out the joint savings account, then blow it at the track. Then he would ride all over town with some cheap hussie on the arm and rent a hotel room by the hour. The Knicks would run up a tab during Happy Hour, throw up in the bathroom, then the bar owner would have to call the Knicks' wife to pick up her unconscious husband and pay off his bill.

When the Knicks wake up later that evening, he would complain that he has a bad wife because dinner is not on the table.

And seriously, how many times has Marbury picked up the Knicks at the bar in the middle of the night?

Duhon played all 48 minutes last night against Detroit. He's averaging over 40m/gm. Seriously, how long can he keep this up?

If they don't want to "give in" to Starbury, fine. Then buy out Jerome James. He's alot cheaper, and he won't be playing for D'Antoni either. But we need to get a backup PG in here fast, especially with Nate hurt. Hopefully, there'll be some news on Cuttino's heart problem soon.

He's played the whole game so far tonight too with 6 minutes to go. I like him. Keep him and David Lee to go with Lebron, Bosh and Wade in 2010.

]Mobley also cited the responsibility to his family and not wanting them to live in fear of what could happen on the court. He has an 8-year-old son. " . . . And then every single day just being scared for you, I think that's a selfish thing, also," he told reporters in New York. "Even though you love something so much, and I am in love with basketball, but sometimes you have to get a divorce."

Man, sorry to hear, but very glad then for the trade and that they caught it.

Cat's a class guy and a good baller. Best of health to him.

they beat Sacramento so badly, even Jerome James saw some minutes. Meanwhile, with Mobley retired and Starbury persona non grata, Duhon is still playing 40+ minutes a night.

we need a backup PG now!

I may be off by one or so, but I think 7 NBA teams have already fired their coaches this season.
That's just about 1/4 of the league in right around 1/4 of the season. At this rate virtually every team will replace their coach before the end of the year.

And you thought the Knicks were unstable.

Ewing to Reno

The D-League yesterday assigned Patrick Ewing Jr. to the Reno Bighorns, a shared affiliate of the Knicks and Kings. Ewing, the Knicks' final cut in training camp, signed with the league Friday. He will play for coach Jay Humphries, who was an assistant under D'Antoni in Phoenix and is using D'Antoni's system. The Knicks can sign Ewing at any time. Of course, so can any other NBA team.

OK can they not put a mike on Coach D'Antoni , these things never sound interesting and he sounded like an idiot.

Curry and that Italian guy will hit the roster before young Ewing.
