Unless they play a LOT better than they did against Northwestern.

I choose to view that play as good hit by a hungry defensive unit, forcing a fumble and helping their team rally to victory. (Go 'Cats!)

Did I? Speaking of SU uniforms, what do you think of their current basketball unis? Historically, SU generally has had nice unis, though each particular design doesn't last for more than a few years. My personal favorite was the one they wore in the second half of the '80's.

Agree on both counts.

The Sherman Douglas ones are what they wore when I was there ('83-'87) and I've got a soft spot for them..

I detest the current version. What's the grey all about? That can't be blue for some reason?

The stripes down the pant leg have a lineage to the late '70s - early '80s Leo Rautins, Red Bruin teams though.

The late 80's unis look far better. The current uniforms look bad by comparison.

On a seperate rant, regarding basketball uniforms in general, capri pants and basketball shorts should not be of the same general length.

The Robinson era at Syracuse comes to a close.

] November 17, 2008 Still Dismal, Syracuse Fires Robinson By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SYRACUSE (AP) — Syracuse Coach Greg Robinson was fired Sunday with the Orange nearing the end of a fourth straight dismal season under him. Robinson will coach the final two games of this season. He is 9-35 in three-plus seasons at Syracuse and 3-23 in the Big East. He has another year left on a contract that pays him $1.1 million a season. Syracuse (2-8, 1-5) lost to Connecticut, 39-14, on Saturday night and is trying to avoid a third 10-loss season under Robinson. The Orange had never reached double-digit losses in a season before Robinson was hired by Athletic Director Daryl Gross in January 2005 to replace Paul Pasqualoni. After Syracuse went 2-10 last season, Gross retained Robinson despite calls for change from alumni and fans but said he needed to see “tangible improvement,” and that did not happen. Pasqualoni had a 107-59-1 record at Syracuse in 14 seasons and was 6-6 in his final year.
The New York Post offers a few candidates... Alums I've spoken to have expressed wonder at how programs like Rutgers and Connecticut can build respectable Division I programs in the same area and league as Syracuse while the Orange continue to flail. Syracuse has so many advantages over those two schools in the area of college football that it is ridiculous. From the facilities to the tradition. For Robinson to be out-recruited by those schools is beyond comprehension.
] ORANGE TO BEGIN SEARCH FOR NEW COACH By LENN ROBBINS November 17, 2008 -- Now that Syracuse Athletic Director Darryl Gross has fired good-guy Greg Robinson, the onus of finding a football coach that can restore this once-proud program to prominence falls squarely on the AD. Robinson, who had no college recruiting contacts in the Northeast, was a bad fit for the job. Gross can't afford to make the same mistake twice. Although there is rampant speculation that Gross, who came to Syracuse from USC, will consider former Trojan assistant coach Lane Kiffin, who was recently fired as the Raiders coach, here are some coaches with East Coast ties who should be considered to replace Robinson: Steve Addazio, assistant head coach Florida - Was an assistant coach at Syracuse from 1995-98. A Cheshire, Conn., native, he graduated from Western Connecticut State. Fiery guy who could quickly breathe enthusiasm into the program. Doug Marrone, offensive coordinator, New Orleans Saints - A Syracuse alum, he's worked in the Northeast (Cortland, Coast Guard, Northeastern). Under the phrase of class act you'll see his head shot. Turner Gill, head coach, Buffalo - Has turned Buffalo from a punch line into respectable MAC program. MAC coach of the year in 2007. Exudes a sense determined confidence. Mike Ianello, recruiting coordinator, Notre Dame - The name of the game is recruiting. Ianello has been great at it everywhere he's been, especially Wisconsin and Notre Dame. A Port Chester native, he knows everyone there is to know in the Empire State. Mike Locksley, offensive coordinator, Illinois - A Washington, D.C., guy who has previously worked at Maryland and the Naval Academy, he's also considered a recruiting ace. It would be nice to see an African-American head coach in the Big East, too. Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, a Syracuse grad and former player, has been mentioned. Why he would move from one Big East job to another makes little sense, even if it is his alma mater. lenn.robbins@nypost.com

UConn started a division I program maybe 10 years ago I think. They've been ranked and gone to bowl games already in that short span.

Syracuse meanwhile - as the above Times article states - is headed for the third 10 loss season in its history. All 3 of those would be with Robinson as head coach.

OE: I just looked it up - UConn entered Division I only eight years ago (2000). Made their first bowl appearence in 2004.

I agree that would be the best way of determining a true NCAA champion and you don't have to reinvent the wheel since Divsion II and Division III have been doing that for years. Still, it may just be me, but I would prefer the president address more important issues such as fuel prices, unemployment, homelessness, crime, the war in Iraq.

Rutgers beat up on Army today, by a score of 30-3. Yes, one of those touchdowns was the result of a ridiculous blown call. Nonetheless, the Scarlet Knights dominated today.

In addition, after starting the season 1-5, with today's win Rutgers is 6-5. With only one regular season game left (against Louisville on December 4th on ESPN), Rutgers is assured of a non-losing record and, thus, is bowl eligible.

It may wind up being a crappy bowl (who can forget their dominance in last year's International Bowl, on the shores of Lake Ontario. Or, more to the point, who other than I can remember it....). But a crappy bowl is better than no bowl.

In case you missed it, last night the U of Buffalo defeated previously undefeated Ball State to win the MAC conference. They will probably play in the International Bowl in Toronto.

The Buffalo coach is Turner Gill (ex-Nebraska QB), one of only three African-American head coaches in major college football.

The last time Buffalo made a bowl game was in the late 1950's. But the game was to be in the South, and they were told the Black players on the team were not welcomed. So the team decided to stay home. I heard the QB of the current team (in an interview by Ed Coleman) say that the surviving players from that team have been invited to accompany the team to this bowl.

Let's hear it for them!

]BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II US Ranked 4th After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II. "Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work--including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule-- our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking." Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated "The US only had two major victories--Japan and Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren't influenced by head-to-head contests--they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event." German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said "Yes, we lost to the US; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks." Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn 'style points' to enhance Germany's rankings. Hitler protested "Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces." The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented "France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2." Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

Rutgers edged my sons, NC State Wolfpack in the pizza bowl, so he's a little bummed. Once the Wolfpack's quaterback had to leave the game with an injury, I knew they were in big trouble. Meanwhile, Rutger's QB (Teel) played great and was the difference in the game down the stretch.

Speaking of quaterbacks with great performances Pat White was masterful for WVU in leading the Mountaineers to victory over North Carolina in the Mieneke Bowl in Charlotte on Saturday. That victory will save me from hearing my partner talk smack when he returns from vacation.

The local papers made a big deal about how the UNC faithful couldn't get enough tickets for the game and had to request an additional supply, while WVU took almost three weeks to sell their allotment of tickets. Considering it was virtually a home game for UNC and they hadn't been to a bowl games in 4 years I'm not surprised they sold their allotment in a matter of days. The papers generally implied, and on occasion stated, that the WVU fans didn't care enough to support their team like the UNC fans. So, in the end, I loved seeing the WVU fans singing "Country Roads" as the majority of the pale blue clad crowd filed out in silence following the game.
