On this Very Special Episode of Desert Island Mix Tape, you are offered a typical Hobson's choice only rather than selecting from the entire library of an artist, you get just one album: An option reserved for billion-sellers only!

So off you go, in order of their appearance on the record and without the "lesser-known" songs that you may still write-in: ("Never Going Back Again," "Songbird," "I Don't Wanna Know" and "Oh Daddy"):

a) Second Hand News

b) Dreams

c) Don't Stop

d) Go Your Own Way

e) The Chain

f) You Make Lovin' Fun

g) Gold Dust Woman

"Second-Hand News" is good country stomp. I never really appreciated it until the Rolling Hayseeds played it at Rusty Cratil's wedding. My vote is there.

"I Don't Wanna Know" ain't no filler.

'The Chain' had some nice bass & drum bridges, but it's tough to top the personal venom of Lindsey & Stevie screaming "Go you own way" at each other.

Shackin' up's all you wanna do

Hearing that song again recently is what prompted the whole Rumours poll. Can you believe this record had 4 gigantic singles and "Second-Hand" wasn't one of them? Buckingham says he borrowed from "Jive Talkin'" when he wrote it. Gotta love it!

I still think I'm gonna go my own way though.

Go Your Own Way, though there are many memorable songs on here. Good desert island poll, this one.

On a related thought, did anyone ever bring Fleetwood Mac into the Band Ladder Challenge?

Worked at a record store the Christmas after this came out. Had previously liked the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac but this band and this album in particular drove me to distraction.

Where did you sit with the Bob Welch era?

Nice splitter that guy had.

And the way he came back from alcoholism was inspiring.

Met connection: In July 1969 Fleetwood Mac was the headliner of the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park, along with The Byrds, Chuck Berry, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, B. B. King, The Beach Boys, Frank Zappa and Patti LaBelle.

Went with the Chain from the choices. My sister listened to Gypsy and Landslide NON-FUCKING STOP while growing up. As much as I hated her for that torture, I can dig the songs now.

The Rumours formula: when you're at the top of your game, but boozing, infighting, and betrayal are tearing you apart, don't break up! Instead, write songs about how much you've hurt each other and somehow, find a way to play them together, and rake in the gold!

Has any other band ever tried this solid-gold system?

I should do an infomercial. "If you adhere to each of the five basic Fleetwood Mac principles, you too can fully unleash your inner potential. Don't take it from me. Let's hear from original band member --- and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer --- Mick Fleetwood."

I think it was more like: Are you a guitar player whose ditzy girlfriend started fucking your drummer? Don't El Kabong! Let her know in song!

Hey, whoah, wait. This all started because the previous guitar player was fucking the drummer's wife.

It goes back. Fleetwood was paying back his successor for his predecessor's sins. Or something. It's circles within circles. It's THE CHAIN. The chain of betrayal, baby.

A solid gold chain.

Do your realize that during the infight leading up to Runours, their manager took advantage of their lack of activity and stole their brand? He got together a fake band and billed them as Fleetwood Mac and started them on a tour. His press angle said that Mick and Welchie had quit the band but that the McVies would be joining the clones during the tour.

As absurd as it was to claim that his was the real band when the band was named after two non-present band members, Bob Welch made a plea to the label and found out they didn't know the band members from Adam. He convinced them to all to move to LA to re-assert their Macness as a group, thus precipitating them meeting a self-absorbed couple with gender-inappropriate names and growing from big to GALACTIC.

Out of betrayal, gold! California gold, baby!

I've got to stop with the "baby."
