Who's this "D Murphy" fella?

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 10:52 AM

Easley's hurt.

Elster88
Sep 14 2008 10:54 AM

Really?

SteveJRogers
Sep 14 2008 10:59 AM

I'd like to see Chipper get a nice Golden Sombrero in his final game here!

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 11:01 AM

"Damion Easley is out, although Jerry Manuel was going to check on his availability to pinch hit. Manuel seemed reluctant to hit Easley, however, because the injury (right quad) was on his back leg."

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 11:26 AM

Hope Perez settles down.

A walk and 2 singles makes it 0-1 chop shop in the 1st.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 11:34 AM

Mr Wright gets it right back.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 11:43 AM

Brewers have a 2-0 lead on the Phils in the 1st.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 11:51 AM

The Mets really need "good Ollie" to show up today.

Some offensive fireworks wouldn't hurt either.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 11:52 AM

I'd say striking out the side in the 2nd can be considered "settling down".

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:06 PM

Damn Chipper.
2 for 2 and just drove a double over Beltrans head for the RBI.

1-2

Three times in two days have a grounder hit off the Braves pitcher and deflected right to an infielder.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:26 PM

I missed Wrights 2nd homer when it happened.
Just saw it.
Man, that was a shot.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:27 PM

How come Ollie isn't doing that little rocking thing going into the windup anymore?

Elster88
Sep 14 2008 12:28 PM

I like that one Zvon. Makes me thirsty. And warm and tingly.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:31 PM

Phils are threatening in the 4th.
1st and 3rd, no out there.

SteveJRogers
Sep 14 2008 12:40 PM

Braves botch the DP and its now 4-2 Mets

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:42 PM

Phils scored one in that inning but Cameron just now absolutely crushed one to make it 3-1 Brewcrew.

Heads up running by Perez plates the Mets 4th run on a blotched DP.

4-2 and a pitching change for Atlanta.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 12:43 PM

No way was that strike 3 on Mr Wright.

Wright gives his Edgy wedding his blessing on video, then goes for two homers on the big day!

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 12:49 PM

I'm hoping for a trifecta from Wright in celebration of Edgy and Cha's big day.

duan
Sep 14 2008 01:00 PM

i'm watching this with the sound off so what the hell happened with the umpire and manuel in the 5th inning.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:01 PM

Oh, todays the big day?
GRATZ EDGY!

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:07 PM

Ryan Howard just tied it with a cheap opposite field pop up 2 run homer in Philly.

Dunno. I was busy searching for that silly pic above.
Anyone know?

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 01:12 PM

Wish I could help you Duan, but TBS is showing the Red Sox hosting the Blue Jays.

The Sox lead 2-1 in the sixth by the way.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 01:15 PM

By the looks of it on Gameday, Schneider's fly may have been a home run in the Phillies band box. It was likely as far as Howard's 2-run wall scraper.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:21 PM

Nice 7th inning from Perez.

I'd really like to see more runs from the Mets offense.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 01:24 PM

Ollie's getting better as the game goes on

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 14 2008 01:33 PM

I don't like Julian Tavarez. Seem like anytime something assholish is going on, he's involved. And I think he has multiple rings, too.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 01:39 PM

Come on Beltran. I want some tack on insurance runs NOW!!!

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:41 PM

That homeplate ump sucks.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 01:47 PM

Have the Braves hit a groundball AT anybody yet this series?
I swear every piece of shit they get finds a hole somewhere ... and no we're back to where we were yesterday.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:49 PM

Show handles Chipper but that was sandwiched between two singles by Prado and McCann.

Smith takes over.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 14 2008 01:49 PM

Freaking Schoenweis. We have half of New Orleans down in the pen, and Jerry brings in Show, who promptly does what Show does.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 01:52 PM

Phils break out for 4 runs in the 8th.
Victorino homer the big shot.

7-3 there.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 01:57 PM

Great job by Smith

Now why is Brewer mgr Ned Yost leaving (LOOGY) Brian Shouse in to face Burrell and then Victorino?

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:02 PM

Come on Jose. It would be comforting to get Luis in from third here.

Why would Manuel pinch hit Endy for Murphy here? I just don't agree with that move.

Prove me wromng Endy!

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:07 PM

Personally, I would have let Murphy hit and then subbed Endy defensively (hopefully as a pinch runner) into left for the bottom of the ninth.

Endy came in to play left last inning.

They showed this shot of him there in left and his glove looked as big as that glove outside the outfield wall in San Fran.

Its Ayala for the save!

Phils game over.They win 7-3.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:10 PM

Thanks, that makes much more sense.

I've been working in the yard and checking in on Gameday periodically. I was apparently outside when the defensive switch was made.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:11 PM

Two lead off singles in the ninth. (can that be? Ok, back to back singles to lead off the 9th)
Come on Ayala, shut the door.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:11 PM

We need a double play ball right here.

Farmer Ted
Sep 14 2008 02:13 PM

UNBELIEVABLE!!! No actually, I almost expected that. I don't know why I do this to myself.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 14 2008 02:16 PM

Dammit!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 14 2008 02:16 PM

This really isn't good.

The Phillies are heating up just as the Mets are cooling down.

It's looking like deja vu all over again.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:17 PM

The Mets have so few reliable pitchers in the pen that I feel that no lead of less than 4 runs is even remotely safe.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 14 2008 02:18 PM

Well, if Feliciano can hold them here, we've got Wright, Delgado, and Beltran due up in the ninth. So there's still hope for a rousing comeback victory.

But I'm feeling more gloom than hope right now, I have to say.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 02:18 PM

It's like they draw straws out there to decide whose turn it is to fuck up.

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 02:19 PM

Ayala wasn't as good he showed. There was a reason why his ERA was about 6 in Washington. Sadly, we just saw it.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 02:19 PM

Pen so far: 4 pitchers, 11 batters faced, 4 outs

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:22 PM

Greg Norton.
Who the frak is Norton?

TheOldMole
Sep 14 2008 02:23 PM

I'm gonna watch the Jets. At least for a few minutes.

And grade papers.

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 02:24 PM

It was a beautiful afternoon, and then everything has gone to hell in the last half-hour.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:25 PM

I guess Manuel has forgotten all about that hand the ball off to the next pitcher stuff as Feliciano can't get off the mound fast enough.

mario25
Sep 14 2008 02:25 PM

There isnt a good reliever in this whole bunch...end of discussion

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 14 2008 02:31 PM

Again, he has all of New Orleans out there. Shoe and Feliciano CLEARLY have nothing left. Why is he bringing them in instead of someone fresh?

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:31 PM

Well, we got the big guns up.
A comeback here would be HUGE.

This team has to be able to do this kinda stuff.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 14 2008 02:33 PM

I like your optimism and enthusiasm Zvon. Now pass the Koolaid, I need a big swig.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 02:35 PM

Why do I foresee a two run inning coming up here?

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:36 PM

lead off singles by Wright and Delgado brings Beltran up with 2 on, no out.

Frayed Knot
Sep 14 2008 02:38 PM

Jerry does like playing lefty/righty doesn't he?

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:38 PM

Gotta work that pitcher Beltran.
Booth says Braves closer didnt sleep a wink last night.

Beltran pops out.

Church won't bat.

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 02:40 PM

Jesus... how can Tatis swing at crap like that.

TheOldMole
Sep 14 2008 02:41 PM

Unfortunately, I switched back to the Mets.

bmfc1
Sep 14 2008 02:42 PM

TOM--you got to see them miss a 31 yard field goal. Sports sucks.

mario25
Sep 14 2008 02:44 PM

This relief corps should really all think about giving up the game.....If the Mets dont totally retool the bullpen next year I would be amazed.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 14 2008 02:47 PM

They're committed to Billy Wagner as their 2009 closer, even though they know he won't pitch.

I was surprised to see Castillo bat for himself in the 9th; I was expecting Easley.

Oh well.

I think we should all lower our expectations for this season. It will sting less if the Mets don't make the playoffs, and will be a nice surprise if they do.

That's the approach I'm going to try to take.

Zvon
Sep 14 2008 02:49 PM

bmfc1 wrote:

....really.

And Castillo stays in and bats to ground out and end my misery, which really won't end with that last out.

This is another one that got away.
Really should have scored more runs.

Booth said the Mets have blown 27 saves this season.
27.
That is a ridiculous number.
Even if we won only 1/3 of those we'd be cruisin'.

I have no illusions.
I'd like the Mets to make the post season. I'd like that real bad.
But even if they do going deep into it would be a miracle.
Not without a real closer and this erratic bullpen.

Picked up a great single (front row, upper box, between third and home) this morning. The rest of the upper box is just "ok," but the front row experience is a premium seat, especially in the opinion of someone who can't afford the field level. Priced the same as the Mezz Reserved, the Upper Boxes seem to generally pale in comparison, except of course for that front row.

(Sadly, the Mets seem to have caught on to the fact that the front row experience -- even in the upper levels -- is a great thing, as they are pricing rows 1-2 of basically *every* section next year higher).

Turns out that picking up the ticket in advance was a good thing, because I saw this when I got to shea:

...which, if nothing else, is a "hey scalpers, raise your prices" sort of announcement. Stadium was of course far from full even if it was announced as a sell-out. I had two empty seats to either side of me.

Anyway, today was "Deaf Awareness Day" at Shea, which several schools for the deaf having large groups of their students in attendance. About an inning and a half into the game, three of them, each about 9 years old, snuck down to the two empty seats to my left, with the third sitting on the stairs. I of course moved over to the box next to me so they could sit in the seats and not get kicked out.

Two of the three of them were deaf, so their friend was very busy providing translation services. They were very taken by the game and had tons of questions to ask -- which I was happy to answer, especially once they revealed that it was their first time at Shea, and wanted to ask me about the first time that *I* had been to see the Mets. They turned out to be equally transfixed by the binoculars I had with me, passing them between the three of them for most of the game.

It was a scorcher today, and what I really wanted to do was to buy them sodas, or ice cream, or something -- especially after they had asked the family behind us a couple of times what the prices were for those concession items. Unfortunately, in today's society, an unaccompanied man buying soda/ice cream for a couple of little kids who are not his own -- or even slipping them the money to do so -- just seemed like asking for trouble.

I thought I saw KC in the front of Loge Reserved behind third base but unfortunately didn't get a chance to get down there and say hi.

Sadly, this was only the third or fourth worst unmitigated bullpen disaster that I had been to this year.

Last seat in row A, probably saw the sun reflecting off the chrome dome.

I headed up to the shade later for a few innings with metfairy, fafif, et al
in the mezzanine.

Lousy game.
