IGT - 9/15 Mets at Nationals

It was in Washington last year that I first felt like they may blow the damn thing. I dub tonight a BIG GAME.

We need Pedro not to suck. I don't mean, throw a 3-hitter and whiff 10. Just not to suck.

By the way unlikely that Easley will play tonite or for several days. He tweaked something while costing us Saturday's game with that DP.

And he has to personally bat in about 10 runs. More if possible. And pitch a complete game.

The good news is that we scored 23 runs on these guys during the most recent two game series.
The bad is that we let up 18 in the process.

No way should that team be getting 18 runs off anybody much less off a (supposedly) good staff.

And knowing they did that to Perez and Pelfrey gives one pause over the blood they could shed with 84-mph Pedro out there.

Frayed Knot
Sep 15 2008 07:31 PM

- the problem with leaving in Rincon is that he's never been anything other than a lefty specialist his whole career

- the problem with walking Dukes is that you'd be loading the bases and pushing a 2nd run into scoring position where a cheapie single can do almost as much damage as the HR did

This game is on the hitters who aren't hitting and on the pitchers who are continually * almost but not quite * getting out of the inning.
It's not on Jerry.

I believe that Manuel, like WWSB before him, often ovwermanages the lefty/righty matchups and goes through too many pitchers most nights. Still, I have to feel for him when you consider his limited options in the pen.

Most any game I can imagine Manuel and Warthen considering their options in the pen.

Manuel - "Johan's pitched a hell of a game tonight, but he's up to 112 pitches and I really don't want to wear him out too much tonight. The Braves have a pair of lefties due to open the inning. Who should we send in for the 8th?"

Warthen - "Well, you can go with the Show or Feliciano."

Manuel - "Great. Show can't get anyone out and Feliciano never gets the first guy he faces. Might as well put Pedro out there while there is no one in scoring position."

Feliciano give up a bomb to the first batter.

Manuel - "I told you, he never gets the first man he faces. Have Smitty get ready for the righthander."

After surviving the 8th without further damage and having burned Smith and Schoeneweis along with Feliciano in the inning, Jerry considers his options for the 9th

Manuel - "Now what? We're still up a run. All we need is three outs."

Warthen - "Stokes is unavailable after the heavy shelling he took in the 8th last night, but we still have lots of options. Heilman, Sanchez, and Ayala are all rested and ready to pitch the 9th.

Manuel - "Just shoot me now."

You are putting WAY too much stock in a piffy, innocuous statement written in frustration.

Of course if it had been Murphy, or even Jose Reyes who made the final outs of both games I would not have made a comment about their future with the team (or Reyes' big contract). But because it was Castillio who has had a bad, injury riddled year, been given butt kisses all year by the SNY commentators, and will be with this team for three more seasons, yeah my comment had some edge to it. It wasn't meant to lay the blame of the games, or the past week at his feet.
