IGT 9/16/08--Mets @ Nationals

Reyes, ss
Church, rf
Wright, 3b
Beltran, cf
Delgado, 1b
Tatis, lf
A. Reyes, 2b
Schneider, c
Pelfrey, rhp

No Luis.

I'm on my way to the "generic mistake" (Tom Verducci, SI.com, today).

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 16 2008 02:33 PM

Go Big Pelf.

Tonight's game is a little bigger than yesterday's.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 16 2008 02:35 PM

Yeah. I think we have to at least win all of the Pelfrey/Perez/Santana starts.

Frayed Knot
Sep 16 2008 02:52 PM

Nothing like pumping up the offense with a .250 hitting 2nd baseman (.220 in August) with 1 extra base hit and 4 walks.

Of course I'm only knocking Argenis Reyes because I, like Gary Cohen, am in the tank for Luis Castillo. Marching orders from SNY and Omar ... you know how it is.

I would think 8-5, however they come, would put us in pretty good shape.

TransMonk
Sep 16 2008 03:13 PM

9-4 would be better...but at this point, I'll take one game at a time.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 16 2008 03:22 PM

8-5 will only be good enough if the Phillies go 7-5. And I think they'll do better than that. (Of course, if the Brewers go 7-5 or worse, then we'll still be okay.)

What the Mets really need is a 10-3. And that's a pretty tall order, but it's doable.

Centerfield
Sep 16 2008 03:58 PM

10-3? I'd sign up for 9-4 right now. I don't see them doing any better than that.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiigggggggggghhhhhhhhhhttttttttt and its just imaginged that Cohen gives verbal blow jobs to Castillo on the air since he got here.

Come on, even YOU'D agree that Cohen's journalistic integrity went right out the window the moment he started the TV gig. Why? Who knows, maybe he figures Hernandez and Darling should be the ones making comments, snarky or straight, about the performance of Met players, managers, coaches, etc and he has to be the koolaid drinker of the booth.

He has changed drastically since his radio days, and not for the better.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 16 2008 04:18 PM

STFUJ

Gwreck
Sep 16 2008 04:19 PM

You know, Steve's not 100% wrong on that. Cohen has indeed gone downhill since the move to TV.

That being said, any chance for a reasoned analysis of why goes out the door once the nonsense about having no journalistic integrity/verbal fellatio/etc. is put into play.

You could make your point so much more effectively.

KC
Sep 16 2008 04:29 PM

I agree that Cohen has changed some, but I don't buy the 'he's joined the
company line' crap. The booth is plenty critical of the Mets when it's war-
ranted and it's been quite warranted.

Verbal blow jobs? I watch almost every single game and Steve is so far off
base here it's pathetic. He must be confusing Cohen with Michael Kay who
he probably sees much more of.

My hope is that no one poster will turn each remaining IGT into a spitting
contest ... it's about the game, not one of us.

G-Fafif
Sep 16 2008 04:55 PM

Could maybe 20 of us contribute 5% of our quads to form a new and healthier one for Damion Easley? Not only would the lineup look a lot better, but we'd save a lot of energy otherwise devoted to considering how badly Luis Castillo needs to be criticized.

Ben Grimm - "Yeah. I think we have to at least win all of the Pelfrey/Perez/Santana starts."

They'll likely have to throw a lot of complete games to do that.

metirish
Sep 16 2008 05:10 PM

I can't say I listened to Gary a whole lot when he was on the radio but I would think that the SNY booth gets high marks for being objective. I know Mushnick was critical recently of Cohen in a column.

Maybe now being with a few ex jocks the last few seasons has changed him , I don't know.

I took FK's post above as him poking a little fun , taking the piss if you like.

Let's

And Jose a great stop.

A Boy Named Seo
Sep 16 2008 05:23 PM

I think you meant to say "METS".

Frayed Knot
Sep 16 2008 05:30 PM

That was a tougher inning for Pelfrey than it should have been considering that no ball left the infield.

mario25
Sep 16 2008 05:38 PM

RU kiddin me??? These guys cant hit Perez tonite??? They are gripping the bats too tight under pressure.

TheOldMole
Sep 16 2008 05:43 PM

Pelfrey in control that inning.

mario25
Sep 16 2008 05:43 PM

How about a nice 4 spot this inning...

A Boy Named Seo
Sep 16 2008 05:44 PM

TheOldMole
Sep 16 2008 05:50 PM

7 in a row for Perez?

TheOldMole
Sep 16 2008 05:58 PM

Defense playing solid.

Frayed Knot
Sep 16 2008 06:12 PM

Defense is fine.
But we've got 1 baserunner after 13 batters, or, looked at another way, 2 runs through 13 innings.

mario25
Sep 16 2008 06:16 PM

THEY ALL OF A SUDDEN CANT HIT...THEY ARE REALLY AWFUL....WHY NOT PLAY MURPHY OCCASIONALLY?????

mario25
Sep 16 2008 06:19 PM

PUT MURPHY ON 2ND BASE

metirish
Sep 16 2008 06:19 PM

I suppose with all the lefties the Mets have seen Murphy got a bit buried.....I am now officially worried.

Sep 16 2008 06:25 PM

Tatis looks like he might be injured badly...shoulder...

TheOldMole
Sep 16 2008 06:26 PM

Tatis out, Evans in, not clear how bad he's hurt.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 16 2008 06:30 PM

Yikes. The offense knows there's a game going on, right?

HahnSolo
Sep 16 2008 06:31 PM

1-0 after 2 outs and no one on and the pitcher coming up. Ugh. Now Zim up.

Tatis: separated right shoulder.

Gwreck prognosis = out for season.

Gwreck
Sep 16 2008 07:13 PM

Braves have bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the 6th. Still down 4-3.

TheOldMole
Sep 16 2008 07:13 PM

Tatis gave them so much this season.

mario25
Sep 16 2008 07:14 PM

Willie Harris plays great only against the Mets

HahnSolo
Sep 16 2008 07:14 PM

And the way he got hurt was such a waste. Probably didn't need to dive.

Gwreck
Sep 16 2008 07:17 PM

Braves tied it up on an RBI groundout. 2 outs, 2nd and 3rd.

HahnSolo
Sep 16 2008 07:18 PM

Thanks, Pelph. We needed a big outing and you gave us one. Come on offense, get him a couple of runs here.

KC
Sep 16 2008 07:21 PM

Nice outing by Pelf making it through seven.

Braves are winning.

Can the Mets score some runs? Can't say I'm overly optimistic.

Gwreck
Sep 16 2008 07:22 PM

Atlanta now up by two after an RBI single.

mario25
Sep 16 2008 07:22 PM

A.Reyes allowed to hit in that spot????

mario25

Castro should hit against lefties when healthy.

TheOldMole

Who's Ramon Martinez?:

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 16 2008 07:25 PM

Ugh! Martinez belongs on 3rd.

Gwreck
Sep 16 2008 07:26 PM

Apparently not a very good pinch runner.

HahnSolo
Sep 16 2008 07:26 PM

How do you not end up on third on that hit and run???????

Nice hit by Cancel, nonetheless.

Fman99
Sep 16 2008 07:26 PM

Holy hell, it's a rally!

I have this odd feeling of hope. What will come of all this?

Good to see Odalis Cy Perez coming off of the hill. Bring on the pen.

McCann RBI single, 7-4 Braves.

That hit and run is pissing me off more and more now that the game is final. Castro on a bad ankle could have gotten to third there. Why the hell is he stopping or looking? That was a textbook hit and run single by Cancel and it was wasted.
Yeah, I know Reyes had an infield bouncer next that wouldn't have scored him anyway, but the pitching approach probably changes with a runner on third.

Buster Olney on Baseball Tonight, describing the Mets struggles against left-handed pitching, sums up the situation by saying "David Wright is struggling."

Wright in September: .340/.396/.660

Go hike Cock Mountain, Buster, with the rest of your dumbass show.

bmfc1
Sep 17 2008 06:38 AM

Buster Olney said this morning on Mike & Mike that the Mets would miss the playoffs. We can think that but screw him, the Yankee loving schmuck, for saying that.

bmfc1
Sep 17 2008 06:43 AM

As mentioned, I was at last night's game, and--guess what--it sucked! 1-0 means nothing to stand up and go nuts about the whole night. We enjoyed the pre-game march to the bullpen by the relievers (Parnell with the pink backpack)--a Mets fan near me yelled "Don't blow it tonight!" Feliciano turned toward him and gave him a thumbs up.

Jason, from FAFIF, came by and that was very nice. Not many people can say that they've sat with both halves of the FAFIF team at Nationals Park. That might be a record!

There really isn't much to say about the game--J. Reyes looks awful (everyone is talking about Wright but look at him, too). I'll be back there tonight.

Dcbatgirl reports that she is tempted to talk a little bit of trash, but is holding back because everyone has been so welcoming.
