OOTS, 9/18/08 Brewers-Cubs, Phillies-Braves

Things get started early today, with a day game at Wrigley Field. (Starts at 2:20 Eastern Time.)

The matchup is Bush and Harden, which sounds vaguely dirty.

Brewers 0-2 since firing Yost. I can't imagine Doug Melvin has job security if the Brewers fail to get to the post-season.

Didn't they win last night?

TransMonk
Sep 18 2008 10:51 AM

Yeah, their 1-1, meaning Sveum has a better winning percentage than Willie did this year.

Sep 18 2008 10:52 AM

My bad , yes they won...

Brewers have already scored in the top of the first. They have runners on first and second and one out, J. J. Hardy batting.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 12:42 PM

Bases loaded and one out, but Hardy and Counsell both strike out. Milwaukee settles for just the one run. Hopefully that comes back to bite them later.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 12:43 PM

Hardy walked to load the bases, but Harden then struck out the next two to end the inning.

Brewers only score once, but Harden has thrown 38 pitches. He'll need a few easy ones if he's to go deep into this game.

1-0 Brewers, Cubs coming to bat.

Let's Go Cubs. They looked rotten last night.

I think Bush is the guy we ripped for 6 runs in the 1st inning a few weeks ago.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 12:48 PM

According to the "Piggly Wiggly" scouting report, Dave Bush is prone to giving up home runs. Luckily for him, this is one of those Wrigley afternoons where the wind is blowing in from the outfield.

Cubs go down quietly in the first.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 12:58 PM

Jim Edmonds, not intimidated by the wind blowing in, smashes an opposite field homer and ties the game at 1 in the bottom of the second.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:13 PM

Ben Sheets, with an "elbow twinge" is "doubtful" for his next start.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:24 PM

It's the middle of the 4th, game tied at 1, and Edmonds' homer is still the only base hit in the game.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:29 PM

Derek Lee just had a ball jump off his bat, but the wind apparently held it up and it was caught in center field.

Oops... Aramis Ramirez follows that up with a line drive that the wind couldn't stop.

2-1 Cubs.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:41 PM

With Dave Bush on second and one out, Durham hits a one hopper to the right field wall, and somehow, it only ends up as a single, and Bush fails to score.

Oops, check that. Durham is on second base.

Brewers announcers not sure whether to credit right-fielder Fukudome or to blame Bush, but they're putting most of the blame on the runner.

Braun batting with two in scoring position and one out.

Cross your fingers for Rich Harden.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:42 PM

Big out for Harden as Braun pops to first.

Fielder coming up for the intentional walk.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 01:48 PM

And with the bases full, Hardin gets Hardy to fly to Fukudome in right, just short of the warning track.

Hardin is probably done. He's thrown over 100 pitches in five innings.

Still 2-1 Cubs, middle of the fifth.

EDIT: The count is 115 pitches for Harden. Bush, meanwhile, has thrown 47 though 4.

Even though the Cubs are now wearing those reptilian batting helmets, there's still something about the way the sunlight reflects off the helmets during a Wrigley Field day game that reminds me of games I watched on Channel 9 as a kid.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:06 PM

With one out and a runner on first, DeRosa screws up a double play ball. (I felt like I was watching the Mets!) Brewers threatening in the sixth. First and second, one out.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:11 PM

And the Brewers take advantage of the error.

Mike Cameron singles home the tying run with two out.

2-2, Milwaukee still batting in the top of the 6th.

More bad news: Heilman and Feliciano warming up in the Cubs bullpen!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:12 PM

And Ray Durham singles to put the Brewers on top 3-2.

Grrr...

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:16 PM

Braun continues the hit parade and Milwaukee now leads 4-2.

An IBB to Fielder loads the bases again.

I'm not having warm feelings for this Cubs pitcher Samardzija.

I hope the Mets pound the shit out of him next week at Shea!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:21 PM

The new pitcher, Wells, issues a bases-loaded walk to Hardy before mercifully getting the final out.

Brewers 5, Cubs 2.

Four runs score. I think 3 of them will be earned (because you can't assume the double play) but none of them would have scored if not for the error.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:34 PM

Eric Gagne in for the Brewers, and even HE'S getting guys out.

Cubs go 1-2-3 in the 7th, still 5-2.

My hopes for a perfect day (wins for the Mets, Cubs, Braves) are starting to fade.

Pennant races make for strange bedfellows.

Samardzija was a stand-out WR at Notre Dame and a favorite target of Brady Quinn. He could've gone the NFL route as a high round draft choie.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:41 PM

I wish he had!

Mota in for the Brewers. There's hope!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:50 PM

And Mota gets through the eighth. (He issued a two-out walk, but then struck out Soriano.)

This is the first game I've watched all year, for more than a few minutes, anyway, that didn't involve the Mets.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 02:56 PM

Brewers tacking on in the 9th. It's now 6-2, with one out. (A runner thrown out at the plate.)

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 03:05 PM

Gonna take one hell of a rally now.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:06 PM

With two out and nobody on, the Cubs get a baserunner on an error and a run-scoring single. (6-3)

Tying run on deck. DeRosa batting. Can the goat become a hero?

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:06 PM

He does! (Sort of.) He singles into the gap and the tying run is at the plate.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 03:07 PM

Tying run will bat.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:07 PM

SOTO TIES IT WITH A THREE-RUN HOMER!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:10 PM

Fukudome grounds out to end the inning.

I had to switch from the Brewers broadcast to the Cubs broadcast because Milwaukee lost its sound. The Cubs announcers are chuckling with glee.

Yeah! What losers!

Are you watching too, Centerfield? Or following on the Internet?

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:18 PM

Brewers go quietly in the 10th. Marmol energizes the crowd by striking out the last two batters.

Johnson, Soriano, Theriot due up in the bottom of the inning for the Cubs.

G-Fafif
Sep 18 2008 03:20 PM

Obviously the worst thing a manager can do is remove Guillermo Mota.

I had been wearing a Wrigley Field shirt I got many years ago. Disgusted at 6-2, I switched out of it. Moral: Never do anything remotely pro-Cubs if you want something out of them.

KC
Sep 18 2008 03:21 PM

I've been watching the Brewers feed since about the fifth inning. I don't
know about not having a job but it's so nice out I'm thinking I should get
a life being glued to the tv.

The Brewers booth sounds stunned.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:21 PM

I want a Soriano home run here.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:23 PM

He does the next best thing: Called out on strikes.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:24 PM

Theriot fans too. (These strikeouts don't fire up the crowd as much.)

Kerry Wood in to pitch the 11th.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 03:51 PM

On to the 12th.

In the top of the 11th, Wood struck out the side.

In the bottom of the inning, the Cubs got two on but didn't score. Edmonds was ejected; getting a quick thumb after questioning a called strike two.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 03:51 PM

I really thought Soto was going to end it.

(Following along on Gamecast).

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 04:08 PM

Brewers get 2nd and 3rd no out in the top of the inning, fail to score.

First and second, one out for the Cubs now.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 04:09 PM

Now first and third, two down. Up to Derek Lee.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 04:12 PM

Credit an assist to the Pirates and PNC Park, the shirt I went to at 6-2 Brewers.

Good lord, we've got this and we've got Santana going tonight. We were given the moral equivalent of Brant Brown. Let us not blow with it.

Centerfield
Sep 18 2008 04:25 PM

That was fantastic. Hope remains alive for a three-happy-outcome day. Around here, we used to call that Triple Happiness.

I'm very slowly incorporating the idea into my head that these Brewer games are every bit as important to us as the Philly games.
All we have to do, afterall, is to get/keep ahead of either team from here on out and we're in (barring a ridiculous charge from Houston and/or Florida).
Obviously we still have to play well, but if it's just one team that you don't play anymore you could easily get screwed by having them go off on a run and doom your chances no matter how well you play.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 04:49 PM

Oh, yeah, these Brewers games are vital.

Mets magic number for the consolation prize drops to 10.

And tonight, we find ourselves rooting for old friend... Mike Hampton!

Just seeing some brief highlights now.

- Ryan Braun might be a less awful fielder in LF as compared to 3B but he's still pretty awful. Dude can hit but I don't think I've ever seen a liner go through an OFers legs on a fly before. Ug-Lee
- Soto's HR was a bomb. He's the easy RoY this year.
- How big were the TWO runners the Brewers had thrown out at the plate? One in the 9th (with no outs!!) and one more in extras.

Great thread, guys. Had to bail and missed the end.
