Jon Heyman of SI.com has had some nice scoops lately, but this is horrible. Jeter doesn't even have to posses great, unselfish thoughts because Heyman thinks them for him! "Derek Jeter passed Babe Ruth to move into second place on the Yankees' alltime hit list with 2,520. Jeter is one of many Yankees to underperform this season, but that is fairly tied to a hand injury suffered when he was hit by a pitch from Daniel Cabrera early in the season. Knowing Jeter, the individual accomplishment doesn't make him feel any better about the Yankees' awful season." Gee, Jon, you could ask Derek if he feels that way. You could even ask him if the hand injury played a role, and let him make that excuse for himself. Then again, you could do the lazy thing and just assume Derek feels that way. That's the ticket!

That's an excellent point. A lot of sportswriting will sum up a guy's character early and make assumptions the rest of his careeer. If you are lucky enough have a positive spin going, just play the part and let them lap it up.

Actually, I did read a quote where Jeter said pretty much what Heyman was saying. My sense is that he phrased it as "Knowing Jeter..." so that we'd ooh and aah about his closeness to the Great Jeter.

The way the MFYs carried on about the "record" Jeter set was also over the top, making it seem as if Jeter had somehow succeeded Ruth as the greatest MFY ever when all he did was match a basehit as a Yankee total that didn't include Ruth's seasons with Boston. Let''s take away Jeter's first six seasons then match up greatnesswise.

I could only imagine how insufferable it would be if the yankees were playing winning baseball this season.

Well, we've seen how insufferable they've been in the past, so it's not too hard to imagine. What's nice though is that the barf factor of the closing of Yankee Stadium II should be reduced somewhat. Although we might hear stuff about the tragedy and injustice of the last game at the "Stadium" not being a World Series game.

There is talk of moving Jeter to CF . I don't see him as a center fielder though.

I think most of that is coming from fans designing dream lineups for next year at the same time they're coming around to the realization that he's not their dream SS anymore. Who knows if there's any thought of it from inside Yanqui-dom. But who starts their CF career at age 35? That's usually about the age that guys move from CF to one of the corners.

Almost certain I heard Michael kay talk about it, most men would not move to CF at that age but Jeter is not most men.

He's got a good arm, but isn't rangy enough to stay at short. If only they'd ever had a chance to move him to 3rd.

Yes he did but: 1) Only because they had no one else to put there 2) Only for 1 season and change 3) He pretty much sucked at it The other obvious one who comes to mind in Yount, but he was 29 when he made the switch
