For filling in capably when needed.
You provided some memorable moments this year.
I hope you fully recover and will be a contributor to the team next year.

Please share your thoughts about him.

He bailed this team out more than anyone else not part of the opening day crew - and considerably better than some of those too.

Made me think Omar knew what he was doing.

He can be a valuable guy as a spot starter at 1b,3b and the corner outfields next year. Not a starter but a great complimentary guy. He was super this year.

I remember this one time he played a shallow liner off the bat of Odalis Perez all wrong.

No really. Had a nice unexpected year. Almost made you forget that Moises Alou was supposed to be on this team

When he came up spitting hot fire I was sure he was just a flash in the pan. After he went into a big slump I patted myself on the back. And then he proved me wrong. Thanks Fernando. Don't EVER dive for a ball again.

He provided an unexpected boost to the Mets when the teram truly needed it. He could be a good spot starter and a righthanded bat with power off the bench next season.

I wish him a speedy and complete recovery. I hope to see him back with the team in 2009.

The thing about Tatis is that, for all the lines about how he was here only on account of being "one of Omar's boys", he spent all of 2007 in the minors and began this year there also with no guarantee that he ever was going to be called up even though he was playing reasonably well down there.
Not a lot of guys his age would do that and, when finally given the chance, he took advantage of it.

They didn't say so explicitly, but I assume he's out for the entire month of October, too? No chance that he'd be better by the World Series, should we be so fortunate?

Pretty sure he gets thanked in this song....thank you Fernando.

Don't think so.

Easley, maybe. Tatis is done.

If we had to do it all again, I would my friend, Fernando.

I love it.

He played hard and capably in positions he was not familiar with. And he did it like a player who had to give his all just to stay on the ball club. Not a lot of 30+ year old guys with his career would be willing to do that.

Oh, and he had some monster hits for this team.

If he never plays for the Mets again I wish him well in his church-building endeavors.

I proudly added a Fernando Tatis autographed card to my Mets collection last week; he exceeded my expectations more than anyone else this season.

I would like to see him back, though we may not, with all the Mets youth in the outfield. If he's gone, he won't be forgotten.

The final numbers on the Fernando Tatis revival: .297/.369/.484 in 306 plate appearences, 92 games. he drove in 47 and scored 33.
.308/.460/.590 in "close and late" situations according to baseball reference.

what's up with the mets in LF this year?
Moises - hernia/calf
Pagan - separated shoulder going over the railing in LA
Tatis - separated shoulder diving for a junk ball in DC

anyways.
thanks Tatis. you were awesome this year.

His game-tying (8-8) ninth-inning homer on July 26 against the Cardinals, part of a 3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2-walk night was downright electrifying. The next day I believe they showed a stat that all of his homers came from the sixth inning on. Maybe the most unlikely contributor to a Mets season since Rick Reed in 1997.

Daily News today is reporting that Tatis' injury may not be as severe as was first thought, and he might even be available to play in time for the NLCS, should the Mets qualify.

If the Mets make the NLCS don't count Fernando out , per Rubin today, Mets officials hope he can attempt baseball activities in two or three weeks.

The July 6th homerun in the 12th against the Phillies after Billy blew the save in the 9th.

I go back to the May 28th game against Florida as my favorite.

In what was his 8th game as a Met and only 3rd start, his 2-RBI 2B into the LF corner with 1 out in the 12th scored both Wright & Beltran to knock off the first-place Fish after they had taken a lead on an Amezega HR off Sanchez in the top.

Wayne Hagin: Wright scores to tie the game and now all eyes turn to Beltran ...

All of these are good--boy, have there been a lot of great moments this season. It would be a shame to have all of these memories superseded by a bad finish. Come on Mets!

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2008 06:45 PM

You know, I just realized that Tatis was pretty much David Wright's backup at third base. And I would suppose that Easley was next on the depth chart.

So, now what? If David needs a rest, or gets ejected from a game, or something like that, who do we put at third base?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Sep 18 2008 06:58 PM

Murphy has played 3rd in the minors. Ramon Martinez too, maybe?

Kong76
Sep 18 2008 07:07 PM

They specifically changed Murph's position from third because of his bat
and there was no way he'd be with the big club otherwise I thought.

I'm sure he could fill in, though I'd hate that he'd have to.

Gwreck
Sep 18 2008 08:03 PM

I think Argenis would be the backup at third.

smg58
Sep 19 2008 06:31 AM

I figure Murphy would play third if it came to that, but I really hope that's not necessary.

Tatis turned out to be an asset, shaky outfield defense notwithstanding. I'd like to see him back with the team next year. It may cost Evans a spot, but I think Evans would benefit from steady AB's in AAA anyway.

although it really looks like DW could use a day off! =(

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 19 2008 08:15 AM

Yeah, that's what got me thinking about who his backup is.

Frayed Knot
Sep 19 2008 08:34 AM

Murphy and/or Evans are clearly the 3B backups if it comes to the unthinkable but there's no way they're benching Wright at this point, even for a game.
Yeah he may have looked like shit in Washington and is 1 for his last 18 but he also had 12 hits (5 for XB) in the 18 ABs before that.

Gwreck
Sep 19 2008 08:35 AM

Evans? Really?

I again maintain that they'd use Argenis there (or Martinez) before they'd put Murphy or Evans there.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 19 2008 08:43 AM

Well, the other thing is, what if David has to come out of the game in the NLDS or beyond? At that point, you won't (I don't think) have Argenis Reyes or Ramon Martinez on the roster.

I guess it would have to be Murphy or Castillo. But then again, Castillo is their only second baseman if Argenis doesn't make the post-season roster.

Hopefully Easley will be healthy... otherwise we might very well see Argenis in October.*

* As always, should we be so fortunate to qualify for postseason play.

Frayed Knot
Sep 19 2008 09:17 AM

Both Evans & Murphy were drafted as 3rd baseman and played at least some of their minor league ball at that spot.

Considering that I don't want Argenis's bat at 2B I certainly don't want it at 3rd - and if we're talking about post-season I don't even want to see him on the roster unless forced to by Easley's absence.

Sep 19 2008 09:25 AM

Marlon Anderson plays 2B and 3B if I recall, albeit not that well.

Gwreck
Sep 19 2008 09:41 AM

Couple of thoughts:
1. My understanding was that it's extremely unlikely that Easley would be back for the postseason (or certainly not the division series).

2. Assuming #1 is true, I think we're unfortunately destined to have Argenis on the post-season roster.
