IGT 09/24, Cubsos at Metsos

AG/DC
Sep 24 2008 03:05 PM

Press Notes from DC:

  • This day in 1969, Donn Clendenon hit two in support of a Gary Gentry shutout of the Cardinals, and the Mets clinched the brand new National League East over... the Cubs!

  • Zambrano vs. Perez tonight, kids. Come up big, Oliver.

  • Mets have three of the top five RBI-ers in the National League.

  • Jerry Manuel is now winning at .602 as a Met manager. I'll take that to my last day.

  • Carlos Zambrano has been ridiculous this year, hitting .354 / .354 / .582 // .936. He nonetheless has yet to be started above the nine-hole in the lineup.

  • David Wright is still my friend.

Ollie Perez vs Carlos Zambrano

Zambrano's last 7 starts have been all over the map. Among them:
- 2 losses where he was blown out early, including his last one where the Cards knocked him around for 8 runs on 6 hits + 3 BBs in 1-1/3 IP
- 3 NDs where he was not good at all: 3 runs over 5 IP; 6 runs over 4.1; 5 runs over 6
- 1 good start that he won: 1 run thru 7 vs Cincy
- oh yeah, plus a 10-K no-hitter against the Astros

We lost to him in April: 1 run thru 7 IP on 5 hits

Press Notes from the loge boxes at Shea:

Well, this is it - my last trip to Shea. No way I make it out of here without tearing up at least three or four more times.

Watched BP from right over the dugout, then walked all the way up to Row V in section 46.

Apparently, they've already removed the trophies and Mets HOF busts. WTF?

Very emotional night for me. Huge thanks to my friend Ben The Yankee Fan for scoring the WPIX loge box tickets for tonight.

Now Evans strikes out hitting for Schneider. Beltran might need to steal home if he hopes to score.

I guess Castro is coming in? Then why not let him hit for Schneid?

I'm not a fan of Sutcliffe's announcing, but in this instance he was right. The Cubs catcher set up differently for a fastball than he did for a breaking ball every single pitch that inning. Jose could likely pick that up out of the corner of his eye or Beltran could likely signal in from second.

Signal stealing is a part of baseball. We did it in high school and in college the coach had a system of signals for us to use.

7th inning - 3 strike outs.
8th inning - 1 strike out.

Knot - "7th inning was the line-out DP inning actually, but I get your point."

Your're correct. It was the 6th inning that Church, Evans, and AReyes all struck out swinging while Beltran was busy stealing second and third and hoping someone would hit the ball.

Damn, this is very painful to watch. So many great opportunities they have just let slip away tonight.

Mario25 - "crap hit...off the end of the bat"

Good job of hitting, just putting a good pitch in play with 2 strikes. If only the Mets had done that just once in their numerous opportunities, rather than flailing away (often at pitches out of the strike zone), we would all be celebrating a great night by now.

I was pleased to see the stadium mostly filled but the crowd was poor overall, especially when the Mets needed them most (and I don't just mean the bottom of the 10th).

Both the most exciting game and biggest surprise loss since '06.

I've been trying not to think about the last four innings of this game. Of
course someone had to just bring it up at my doorway ... freakin' Yanks
