I’m a wild card waiting
In the middle of the deck
You’d better get a bigger gun
I’m not dead yet!

Reason to be optimistic.

Traditional Home Remedies

Watkins Red Liniment is widely regarded as one of the best natural home remedies to relieve the discomfort in muscles. Just ask New York Mets’ Johan Santana who uses it on his hamstring, arm and shoulder muscles. Liniment isn’t the only home remedy product available from Watkins. The company offers a variety of brands to meet certain ailments beyond pain relief, including cough and cold remedies as well as products for cuts, irritations, bites and burns.

Alright, I'll try -

1 game up in the WC with 6 to go.

Santana tonight.

That's all I got.

As bad as the last 6 games of the 2007 regular season were, the last 6 games of the 1999 regular season were pretty frickin' fun after we thought all was lost.

This team reminds me vaguely of the 1999 team.

Who also were quite interested in what the Brewers were doing the last three days of the season.

I dunno man , when I think about the 1999 team I think of a team with a lot of fight , not seeing that here with this team.

I would say this 2008 team has faced quite a bit of adversity. Whether or not that transalates to "fight" will be determined over the next 6 games. They can't get through a national TV broadcast without the C word being mentioned. They have been patching together 3 starting position players all season (RF, LF, 2B). They have had season ending injuries to their #3 starting pitcher and closer. They went through a month or more of "Will he or won't he be fired?" followed by a managerial firing. Yet, still, they are right there with a playoff spot for the taking. I'm certainly not making excuses for them if they don't win, but these players have played through a lot of shit and have put up a lot of W's.

As for 1999, I'll agree that was a totally different team...but there are similarities. The 2008 team has received major contributions from players that were left for dead (Delgado and Tatis) which is very similar to the contributions Henderson and Ventura made in 1999. Both teams got of to a mediocre start and fired managers and/or coaches in June. After each of those firings, both teams were one of the best in baseball for several weeks. Both entered September looking like they were probably headed for postseason play before stumbling down the stretch. The big difference is in the bullpens obviously.

I was pretty down on them going into the last 6 games of 1999 and I didn't think they were going to make it. But then they surprised me. That's all I'm looking for now.

Well put Monk , I should remember that this is a thread to be optimistic .

Hey, the Cubs got what they needed last night, the best record. Now they can lay down and let us have some fun. I bet Santana goes nuts tonight and throws a monster gem against the Cubbs second-stringers.

Tonight's game is a "should win" and at this point, any "should win" is a "must win." They can't fritter away these opportunities.

If the Mets get this win and the Brewers find a way to lose, things will look a bit less dire tomorrow.

You call that optimism?!?

Here's optimism!

The Mets will win all 6 remaining games, the Phillies will go 2-3, and the NL East title will be ours!!!!

It could happen, and I chose to believe it will.

The Brewers suck too.

Six games left and the Mets have a slim lead on a playoff spot.

I promise to be optimistic tonight, though it may not last long unless this team starts winning.

Mets win, Phillies lose.
This can happen again tomorrow!

I don't want Santana pitching again until the first game of the playoffs.

I think they'd let him go 3 innings or something on Sunday if we've clinched a playoff spot by then.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 24 2008 07:36 AM

Game 1 would be what, Wednesday?

I think I'd rather let him start on seven days rest.

Let's just hope we have the luxury of having to make that kind of decision.

Gwreck
Sep 24 2008 08:37 AM

Yes, game 1 is Wednesday. 7 days rest is fine by me too, although given that he's been awesome pitching on his regular 4 days, I don't want to screw anything up.

Here's something: Brett Myers had been pitching out of his mind for weeks then suddenly hit the skids in his outing, 10 ERs in 4 IP. Since the Phils lost with their Ace on the hill last night, and with the Mets suddenly inching closer again, it'll be xtra pressure for Myers to prove he's not the erratic, wife-beating, closer-wannabe, AAA-demotee we pretty much know he is.

When the Mets charge on to the field to celebrate the final out of the World Series, we'll laugh and think "Damn, I really thought it was all over when they couldn't score a run after getting a fucking lead-off triple. Silly me!"

I don't usually laugh at this stuff but for some reason, this article from The Onion worked today.

At least I'm not nearly as jittery as I was last year at this time. Maybe I'm just getting used to this stuff, or maybe it's because last year's fall from first place was so monumental. This, if it doesn't turn out to have a happy ending, will just be a lost pennant race, although some of the losses are especially gut-wrenching.

The races that the Mets lost in 1985 and 1987 only had one or two of these kinds of games. The last two seasons, it's like Terry Pendleton is hitting that damn homer three times a week.

Thanks. That's the first Mets related article that made me smile today.

"Meanwhile, defending a comfortable 600-0 lead in the top of ninth, the Mets decided to rest up Carlos Voltron by moving him to the outfield and replacing him with reliever Aaron Heilman, who lost the lead and eventually the game after giving up 618 runs to close the inning."
