Minaya Extension?

Buster Olney sez:

"Sources say" Omar Minaya will receive a four-year extension to continue as general manager of the New York Mets. The deal is all but done, but it is not known when the extension will be formally announced.

Not surprising I guess , Rubin I think it was several weeks ago said that no matter what Minaya would be back. The four years might be a surprise.

I'm not anti-minaya yet but 4 years is a bit much considering where his teams have(n't) gone so far.

I think Minaya has dramatically raised the expectations of where the Mets should finish.

The few years before he was here, I remember just hoping the Mets might be able to pull out a 500 record for the season. Now I am just hoping for them not to blow a lead for the playoffs in the last few games. I guess current times are better. . . not sure tho.

Regardless, that certainly makes him very valuable to ownership.

I don't think Minaya raised the expectations, the expectation of making the playoffs or better has been there every year since Piazza came over except for probably 03-04. With the Mets payroll those expectations haven't been out of line.

Missing the playoffs last year was a blunder, missing it two years in a row with all the Mets' resources would be cause for removing the GM in my mind.

I'd fire him no matter how it turns out.

He's fine when back with superior re$ources but I don't think he's shown much of an advantage when on equal footing with his counterparts, and he screwed up this season in an awful lot of ways.

Me too. He's shown that he can schmooze a free agent or two but he hasn't made many especially clever moves.

I'd replace him with that Wayne Kretzsky guy. (I know I have his name wrong. Once he becomes the GM I promise to remember his name.)

I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's watched and watched
and watched care if Omar got the ax. A four year extension just sounds
so absurd that it can't be true, especially if they fail again this year.

And if someone wants to say I stuck up for Omar yesterday in a thread,
that was more in response to a plea for him have done what no one else
does and have sugar bullets in his holster when needed that sticking up.

Apparently news of the extension was first reported over at Mike Silva's NY Baseball Digest.

At least Jon Heyman credits them on his article regarding Minaya.

I'm on the fence with Minaya.

I'm not happy with a lot of his moves (four years for Castillo?), but he gets a lot of points for getting Johan at a good price when nobody thought the Mets were seriously in the running for him. He's also done a good job of getting value from secondary players acquired in trades (John Maine, Ryan Church). On the other hand, he's demonstrated repeatedly that he does not know how to put a bullpen together.

The length of the deal doesn't concern me, because the Mets have eaten plenty of money on managers and GMs in the past and will most likely continue to do so when they deem it necessary.

My two questions are these:

Is there's a better GM available right now?

Does Minaya really deserve to be granted an extension before Jerry Manuel gets one?

It comes down to the last question, doesn't it?

If the Mets clinch the playoffs, I offer Manuel three years the next day, if he's willing to talk.

I kind of agree with KC and Lunchbucket.

But whether you are pro- or anti- Omar, doesn't the timing of this suck? Christ, the Mets just never get it, do they?

I suppose they could argue that the timing isn't their fault as they've not announced anything and say they won't until the off-season.
What it does show is that they're still unable to control the constant leaks out of the front office. If these guys would run the Washington Post we would have known who 'Deep Throat' was 'round about 1974.

I read that the timing was to head off speculation that if the Mets did not make the playoffs that Omar's job would be in jeopardy.

Yes, heaven forbid we speculate on his job security after a second-straight disappointment.

Has there definitely been a leak? Up above, irish writes that the big-leaguers are sourcing an independent blogger.

Source: Mets to extend GM Minaya

Written by: Joe DeMayo

September 23rd, 2008

The Mets will soon announce that they will re-sign General Manager Omar Minaya to a 4 year extension. Terms are not known at this time. This seems to be a great idea to me, Minaya has done a great job, him not getting a reliever at the deadline is proving painful, but he has put a great team on the field, unfortunately he can’t win for the team. It makes perfect sense to have him running the team going into Citi Field,
The blogger doesn't cite his source in the blog, but claims there's one in the title. (He also ends with a comma.)

I really don't see why Citi Field has to be a factor in this at all.

I remember similar talk about Willie Randolph; how the Mets might not fire him because they wouldn't want to open Citi Field with a new manager.

Makes no sense to me.

Both ESPN.com's Buster Olney and SI.com/WFAN's Jon Heyman have been saying this since sometime yesterday and I highly doubt either of them is relying on a blogger as their sole source.

Mets' Minaya gets 4-year extension

By Jon Heyman, SI.com

General manager Omar Minaya and the Mets have agreed on a four-year contract extension, SI.com has confirmed. An official announcement is not expected until after the season.

Minaya's several high-profile acquisitions have built the Mets into a perennial contender in the National League, and while the timing of the news is a little unusual in that the Mets are struggling in September for a second straight season, an extension was expected all along based on the club's overall improvement during his tenure. He also enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Wilpon family, which owns the Mets.

Minaya's major acquisitions for the Mets have included Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez and National League MVP candidate Carlos Delgado. But while the Mets have been a a contender for three straight seasons, they are in the midst of trying to avoid a second consecutive disastrous ending.

Minaya came under fire for the way in which Willie Randolph was fired, but the Wilpons didn't blame him and Randolph's replacement, Jerry Manuel, has led the Mets back into the race.

Minaya's first Mets contract, which was to run through next year, was for about $4 million over five years. The extension is expected to contain a significant raise.

News of the impending extension was first reported on nybaseballdigest.com and espn.com.

Well, SI is claiming an independent confirmation there.

On the other hand: "Minaya's major acquisitions for the Mets have included Carlos Beltran, Pedro Martinez and National League MVP candidate Carlos Delgado."

How about that Santana guy, making more than all of 'em?

Really, his best work is still locking up Reyes and Wright through 2011 and 2013, respectively. 2013!
