I got this as a gift this week ,it's a Mitchell & Ness Cooperstown Collection . I don't remember seeing any Mets jersey's with the New York like that on the front. Is it form 1986/87?

They never wore anything like that -- the lettering and numbers on the back were different, too -- but it's still a cool thing to have!

Yup and the lettering on the back is wrong too.

Hmmm. I thought they only wore the script "New York" on the road grays.

Whoops. Didn't read ahead there.

No Mets patch on the sleeve , so this would be a M&N original just not anything that the Mets wore?

Wear a sweater over it.

I'm guessing its counterfeit. Why would M&N produce something like that that the team never wore?

Yeah seems like you are correct, I went to their website and nothing there that looks like that top.

Anybody wearing a Darryl Strawberry jersey who is not, in fact, Darryl Strawberry is a poseur. And that's fine. It's just a game. Anybody who thinks they're better than you and somehow closer to the real deal because of their recognition and respect for authentic cross-stitching and 1987 alternatives is a shmuck. This is fun to talk about with deep thinkers like metsguy and soup and fman, but it comes down to the same. If you like your shirt, wear it. If Johnny Throwback like his better, he can wear his. Fuck him if he can't take some script across your nipples.

It's hard to argue that point. (But perhaps Cynthia Rodriguez should be considered the exception to the rule.) But while we're on the topic, here's my pet peeve about the legendary Bill Webb and his SNY broadcasts: It seems like every time Gary Cohen mentions Mike Piazza, for example, the cameras show us the back of some old shlub wearing a five-dollar PIAZZA 31 t-shirt. If they mention Darryl Strawberry, they immediately cut to a fan in STRAWBERRY 18. They used to always show those blue-and-white photos that decorate the inner ring of Shea Stadium, but that's tailed off a bit. But they still like to focus on Tom Seaver's 41 in the outfield when he gets mentioned. It's really become a tired gimmick.

Thanks guys for the opinions , I respect them which is why I asked. So if you see a handsome chap walking down the street wearing a shirt like that you'll know who it is.

Edge and I saw a Strawberry poseur at RFK last year. I think he was sitting next to HoJo IIRC.

Yeah, it'll be the guy who stole the shirt from you.

I know this is premature, and we're all counting on it not coming to pass, but...

I also saw the Strawberry Poseurs open for Scritti Politti in 1991.

I don't think anyone was condemning him for wearing it or liking it. He just asked if it was something the Mets ever wore. If he likes it, more power to him. A fun gift. Enjoy.
