Ryder Cup - 2008

The semi-annual exercise to see Americans suck at team golf.
I'm not sure why this is the case but, even when they are considered to have the better players, they don't play well in this format particularly in the Friday & saturday pairs competition. And this year the general consensus is that the Europeans have the better players.

Phil Mickelson
Anthony Kim
Justin Leonard
Hunter Mahan
Chad Campbell
Stuart Cink
Jim Furyk

Mickelson and Kim are losing? I'm very surprised!

Two Team Captains that are tough to like , and that clearly do not like each other despite what they have been saying.

I'm a big fan of the Ryder Cup , tough for me not to see Monty or Clarke on the team this year.

Well they won the last two holes, so they're only 1-down with 4 to play.

Each side is ahead in two matches, but all are 1-up.

And now Mickelson/Kim are all square.

US leads two matches, other two are all square.

Europe playing as poorly in a Ryder cup in a long time. Lots of bad shots.

Morning matches finished 3 points to 1 in favor of USA - which certainly qualifies as a surprise.

Even back when the Americans were considered to have the better players they'd always fall behind, often way behind, in the Fri & Sat partner evets before storming back on the Sunday 1-on-1 matches. I've never been able to figure out why that was the case but for years it was until the last one or two when the Euros dominated Sundays too.
Now, at the moment everyone suddenly thinks the Tiger-less US team is outmanned, they go and grab an early lead. Go figure.

Wow, this is weird.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Americans find themselves in an unusual position: leading the Ryder Cup.

Justin Leonard and Hunter Mahan claimed the first point for the U.S., Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim rallied to halve their match, and a European three-putt at No. 18 handed another win to Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell on a red, white and blue Friday at Valhalla Golf Club.

Mickelson and Kim began their unlikely comeback on 13 after the European team of Padraig Harrington, winner of the last two majors, and Robert Karlsson gave way to Pedro Feliciano and Scott Schoeneweis...

Been following online today which is never good at the best of times , got to watch the last hour or so of live play , Americans looking good . Europe needs to have Saturday what the Americans had today.

5-1/2 to 2-1/2 was the first day score
Not sure how far you'd have to go back to find a score that good for the American team on a Friday.

Captain Faldo pulls a surprising move by sitting both Serigo and Lee Westwood for Saturday's morning matches.

Cink, Campbell - Poulter, Rose
Mahan, Leonard - Jimenez, McDowell
Mickelson, Kim - Wilson, Stennson
Furyk, Perry - Harrington, Karlsson

AMERICA 9-7 EUROPE.

Europe had the better of things today( not by much) and if Karlsson's putt had dropped Europe would have taken the full point in that game.

Some brilliant golf on both sides today , I just about watched every swing as I was minding the kid all day.

I was watching here and there. Some of those matches were taking forever. You'd think match play would make for quicker rounds but it didn't seem that way.

Amazing how emotional these normally cool, calm, and collected golfers get when suddenly it's not money on the line but the fate of players other than themselves. The whole team concept throws this into a far different light than the ordinary weekly tournament.

USA needs 5-1/2 points to win while Europe needs 7 as, by rule, the defending champ retains the Cup in the event of a 14-14 tie.

[u:660addc10f]Lineup[/u:660addc10f]
Kim - Garcia
Mahan - Casey
Leonard - Karlsson
Mickelson - Rose
Perry - Stenson
Weekley - Wilson
Holmes - Hansen
Furyk - Jimenez
Cink - McDowell
Stricker - Poulter
Curtis - Westwood
Campbell - Harrington

If the Euros can gain a little ground during the early tilts they would seem to have the edge in the final two although if they don't having Harrington as the anchor man might be TLTL.

Kickoff is just after noon with the last one starting right around 2PM EDT.

Very mush deserved and really Europe can have no complaints , they were beaten in every aspect. Disappointed they lost but the competition will be better for it.

Congrats to 'Zinger and his team.

Blonde wives on US team 12 - Non-Blondes 0

Bad weekend for Euro Ryder Cup stalwarts Garcia & Westwood, and also for best non-Tiger player on planet Harrington

Good weekend for US Ryder Cup new bloods Kim & Weekley, and also for Kentucky-bred locals Perry & Holmes.

Predictably, people are talking about how the team was better off without Tiger Woods.

Um. No.

Tiger Woods is without question the single best player in the world, but he has not been overly successful in his Ryder Cup career. Tiger has played 25 matches and has compiled a record of 10 wins 13 losses and 2 halves. He has scored a total of 11 points out of the possible 25 points he has competed for in his career. More importantly, the 5 Ryder Cup teams led by Tiger have won only one event while losing four times to the European team.

Tiger's absence may have forced others to step up their games. I think the American team benefited from the exuberant and talented play of their younger Ryder Cup rookies such as Anthony Kim, Boo Weekley, Hunter Mahan, and J.B. Holmes. The youngsters seemed to invigorate and fire up their veteran teammates. As great as Tiger is, I'm not sure the 2008 American squad would have performed any better had Tiger been able to play.

Funny thing is that, in his amateur days, he was absolutely bullet proof in match play. As an adult, it hasn't suited him.

The regular tour has added some match-play events over the past few years and Tiger has done just fine in those.

The problem with labeling Tiger as someone who is/isn't good in Ryder Cup play is the same one you run into with any type of "clutch" discussion; how well does [u:70ea8d914f]specific[/u:70ea8d914f] past performance predict future results?
So while his RC record is shirley nothing stellar, I'd still want him on my team if available and take my chances. Sergio had a terrific RC record up until now but that shirley didn't win him any points this past week.
