I Adopted a Cat

I adopted a cat yesterday! He's a one-year-old orange tabby whose name I have not yet decided upon. My whole family (with the exception of my mom) loves cats, and I've been thinking about it for a long time. He's a real bundle of fun - he loves flopping down on his side and letting you rub his belly. Unfortunately, I can't get him to go to sleep!

Best of luck. He'll likely settle down and start sleeping better once he acclimates to his new surroundings. I hope you enjoy many years of companionship together.

Our Chester is an Orange Tabby.

You will soon learn that he does not have an owner, just staff. But they repay your kindness with cuddliness.

Good luck with the l'il feller.

People don't adopt cats, cats adopt people.
First they pick out a person and then decide that they're going to allow said individual to feed and shelter them.

We adopted two kittens back in February. (After adopting a puppy in December.) At first, we let the kittens in the bedroom with us, but falling asleep was difficult because there were always cats walking around on us and rubbing their chins on our heads.

That lasted about three days. Now at bedtime we toss them out of the bedroom and close the door. Cats do most of their sleeping during the day. Night is their busiest time.

Thanks everybody!

I think I'm going to name him Leo, because he pounces on his mouse toy like a lion. I considered David, after David Wright, but it just sounded awkward when I called him.

The biggest chore was making sure he was eating out of his bowl and drinking water, but that finally happened this afternoon. Now I need to make sure he stops jumping onto the counter and walking across the stove!

That is just funny , in a good way Val. I can picture it now , Wright strikes out and your shouting " fuck you David" and the cat is like " no fuck you" and pisses on the couch.

Just leave the stove on.
If it works you've cured the cat of stove-walking.
If it doesn't you've got dinner.

Here's a question - how do I get him to sleep in his bed?

You don't. The cat will decide if what you think is his bed is actually his bed.

Cats rock. Our girl Skipper woke us up at 3 in the morning last night with a crash in the living room. She speeds into the bedroom, out into the sunroom then zooms back into the living room.

I get up to find out what's going on to discover her torturing a tiny mouse: picking it up, allowing it to try and run away then pouncing on it over and over. Her runs through the house were with the mouse in her mouth.

I think he finally got away, since there was no sign of dead Mickey and Minnie this morning.

I've always been a dog person, but I adopted a cat in 1990 and when she died last year, replaced her with two more. I've come to appreciate cats. I'm still a dog person, though, but maybe now I've become "bi."

Val, it sounds like you've never had a cat before. Is this true? If so, you'll have to learn that you can't control them all that much. The best you can do is teach them not to misbehave while you're around. (A water pistol is good for this.) Other than that, they're going to do whatever they want.

OK , I would freak if I knew there was a mouse in the house.....I hate them.

Cats are fun. We have nine of them.

The other night, I was talking on the phone with my mom when I heard a loud crash in the kitchen. Four cats ran out of the kitchen away from the noise and four ran into the kitchen to see what it was.

Catgratulations on your catacular news.

I'm a four-time cat person: two active, two immortal. They are the greatest things there could be except when they bug the crap out of you which is often, yet even then they are awesome.

I recommend having them by the pair. When one is doing something, the other is doing something else, so you're never bored.

And neither are they, which is also important.

My first cat was a solo act for 17 years, at least as far as cats go. (She had to endure a dog for 11 of those 17 years.) But when she died, we got a dog and two cats to replace her. (We were torn between getting a dog and a cat or getting two cats. I said, the hell with it, let's get a dog AND two cats.)

Unlike dogs and babies, a second cat isn't much more difficult than having one. The rescue group we got our kittens from recommends two cats as the ideal number. (My mom said that it's because they're just trying to get rid of more cats, but they were also saying that two is better than three, so I don't think that it's a recommendation based on clearing inventory.)

Leo's my shih tzu's name and he came first. You're going to have to come up with a new one.

Val - congrats. I've had cats my entire life, and males are definitely the best to have.

I haven't had the heart to get another cat since our last one, Duke, died. He was 17 when he died a few years ago, and I still miss him. He was my cat, or should I say, I was his human - he followed me everywhere - he would sit on my lap - he would play fetch - easily the smartest cat I ever knew.

in 1992, my wife and I went to Disney World for a week, and let's just say that we brought home a little souvenir - our oldest daughter who was born the following October... We obviously didn't know this when we got home, and began to unpack. Once we finally sat down, Duke immediately jumped on my wife's lap - where he would continuously sit for the next 9 months.

When our oldest was born, Duke was the supreme protector - he would sleep in her doorway every night - he would actually sit on the top of the couch, and watch over her. There was one time, when a friend from work came over to see the new baby. She had never been to the house before - when she came over, the baby was in a bassinet in the living room next to the couch. Let's just say that Duke never left the arm of the couch next to the bassinet the whole time....
