Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos in alleged hit-and-run that killed two
By DAVE GOLDINER
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Troubled Mets relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos allegedly struck and killed two women in a hit-and-run crash in his homeland of the Dominican Republic, cops told a local paper.

Burgos, 24, who missed the whole season with an elbow injury, was driving a Hummer that struck the two women Tuesday evening near the town of Nagua on the island's north coast.

Josefina Minaya Martínez, 38, and Angely Faña, 29, were killed in the crash, the Dominican paper El Nacional reported.
Witnesses told cops that Burgos was driving the Jeep and he later turned himself in for questioning. He is also wanted for a gun possession charge.

Burgos, who came to the Amazin's in a trade with the Kansas City Royals, also plays for Eastern Toros in the Dominican winter league.

Just last month, Burgos was arrested for allegedly manhandling his girlfriend in a Queens hotel. He punched, bit and slapped the unidentified women in a Holiday Inn room on Sept. 8, cops said.

What a list , funny that Minaya used to promote a strong bullpen as the key to winning teams.

Frayed Knot
Oct 02 2008 09:00 AM

My thoughts as I remember them at the time:

1. Failed to re-sign Bradford -- I didn't mind this move based on not liking 3-year deals for relievers and his similarity with the younger/cheaper upcoming Smith. Only problem was then turning around and giving similar money to Schoeneweis
2. Failed to re-sign Oliver -- I thought nothing of this at the time. He was ready to retire and I'm shocked he's still pitching.
3. Allowed Floyd to leave -- Right move then and now

1. Traded Bell/Ring for Johnson/Adkins -- It's easy to lament Bell now, but unfortunately he was lousy during his last season here. Maybe this was a Peterson issue. The problem was what was brought back.
2. Traded Lindstrom/Owens for J. Vargas/Bostick -- Lindstrom had stuff but was wild and not all that young. Owens was more a novelty (catcher turned pitcher). Again, the problem was that the imports weren't good enough to be 4th OF/5th starter types as hoped.
3. Traded Bannister for Burgos -- I liked this at the time. Fans keep saying they want power arms for the pen and Burgos was exactly that plus younger w/more upside. Just didn't know he was going to turn into injury-prone criminal.

1. Re-signed Mota -- showed promise in a brief trial. But too brief + steroids shouldn't equal a 2-year deal
2. Signed Schoeneweis -- See Bradford
3. Signed Sele -- Essentially a meaningless back of the pen move
4. Signed Newhan -- Essentially a meaningless end of the bench move
5. Signed Easley -- Decnet to good bench player
6. Signed Alou -- Good singing

It's not like Omar has done a bang-up job since that 06-07 winter either. The Santana trade was great. Other than that, his track record hasn't been spectacular. Maybe extensions are easier to come by these days:

*Exercise the option on Moises Alou

*Acquired OF Ryan Church and C Brian Schneider from the Washington Nationals in exchange for OF Lastings Milledge.

*Acquired RHP Brian Stokes from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.

*Acquired C Johnny Estrada from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Guillermo Mota.

*Re-signed 2B Luis Castillo to a four-year contract.

*Re-signed C Ramon Castro to a two-year contract.

*Release OF David Newhan and LHP Dave Williams.

*Signed RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract.

*Non-tender C Johnny Estrada, RHP Juan Padilla and OF Ben Johnson, making them free agents.

*Selected RHP Steven Register from the Rockies in the Rule 5 Draft then gave him back.

*Acquired OF Angel Pagan from the Cubs for nonroster OF Corey Coles and nonroster RHP Ryan Meyers.

*Signed OF Brady Clark

*Signed OF Ben Johnson

*Signed free agent 1B Olmedo Saenz

*Signed RHP Tony Armas Jr.

*Signed RHP Nelson Figueroa

*Acquired LHP Johan Santana from the Twins for OF Carlos Gomez, RHP Deolis Guerra, RHP Philip Humber and RHP Kevin Mulvey

*Acquired RHP Luis Ayala from the Nationals for Anderson Hernandez.

In hindsight, I'd say the Church trade was good, the Santana trade was great, and everything else ranges from "eh" to "makes me want to vomit".

I just realized that Burgos got no surge of hits on the UMDB from this. If you rob a jewelry store (Jeff Reardon) or fly a plane into a building (Cory Lidle) your numbers go through the roof.

But you kill two people in the Dominican Republic: nothing!

He's had fewer lookups this week than guys like Shaun Fitzmaurice and Tito Navarro.

I wonder if it's the Dominican Republic angle? If he had killed two women on the Jersey Turnpike this probably would have gotten a lot more attention.

My one memory of Burgos as a Met was him pitching to Ryan Howard in an early season game. In the IGT, I urged Willie to leave him in to face Howard, and Howard promptly hit a game-tying or tie-breaking home run.

It led to a Mets loss to the Phillies. And as we know, had the Mets had one additional win against the Phillies in 2007, we'd have much different memories of that year.

I think we need more nuance than "eh." Small moves can make a big difference and one more small one this year could have made all the difference.

*Exercise the option on Moises Alou

Tough to argue at the time but the money blown on Moises could have gone to better use. Call this one a -2, thought the big failure was not hammering into his head not to dive in a rehab game.

*Acquired OF Ryan Church and C Brian Schneider from the Washington Nationals in exchange for OF Lastings Milledge.

+1 for thew Mets. Could have been bigger. Still can

*Acquired RHP Brian Stokes from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.

+1 for the Mets. Found productivity here.

*Acquired C Johnny Estrada from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Guillermo Mota.

Tough to argue at the time, but backfired. -1.

*Re-signed 2B Luis Castillo to a four-year contract.

-3

*Re-signed C Ramon Castro to a two-year contract.

Looks to be neutral, but swinging into the negative based on the first year. -1

*Release OF David Newhan and LHP Dave Williams.

0 and 0.

*Signed RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract.

-1

*Non-tender C Johnny Estrada, RHP Juan Padilla and OF Ben Johnson, making them free agents.

0 and 0 and 0, but obviously the Johnson release reflects on how you score the deal which acquired him.

*Selected RHP Steven Register from the Rockies in the Rule 5 Draft then gave him back.

0

*Acquired OF Angel Pagan from the Cubs for nonroster OF Corey Coles and nonroster RHP Ryan Meyers.

+1

*Signed OF Brady Clark

0

*Signed OF Ben Johnson

0

*Signed free agent 1B Olmedo Saenz

0

*Signed RHP Tony Armas Jr.

-1

*Signed RHP Nelson Figueroa

+1

*Acquired LHP Johan Santana from the Twins for OF Carlos Gomez, RHP Deolis Guerra, RHP Philip Humber and RHP Kevin Mulvey

+3. Could swing back to a more modest plus.

*Acquired RHP Luis Ayala from the Nationals for Anderson Hernandez.

+1

I think that adds up to a Met net negative 1.

Mets' Burgos jailed for 3 months ahead of trial

By DIONISIO SOLDEVILA – 4 hours ago

NAGUA, Dominican Republic (AP) — New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos will be jailed for three months while awaiting trial for a hit-and-run accident that killed two women.

The 24-year-old reliever told The Associated Press that a Dominican judge ordered him to remain behind bars Wednesday night out of concerns for his safety.

"I am going to come out of this fine because my conscience is clear, and I'm not worried this will affect my career because I haven't done anything," he said in the jailhouse interview.

Burgos is accused of abandoning the victims of the Sept. 30 accident and fleeing, charges that can carry six months to two years in prison. He disappeared after the accident but turned himself in Tuesday.
