$50 bricks

metsguyinmichigan

Boy, I was hoping to get SOMETHING in the auction. But when they want $50 for a brick -- according to the auction and fixed-price items on Mets.com -- they've gone over the edge. That's just too much.

No kidding. I'm really disappointed how they've handled the closing overall.

I agree.

You want to pay upwards of $250.00 for a 'MasterCard' sign?

No thanks.

metsguyinmichigan

You'd think they'd make something available at every price point so everyone could walk away with something.

$50 bricks are a bargain compared to [url=http://mets.auction.mlb.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=98510018&prmenbr=33339254&aunbr=98856728:y2gpfqas]$2,500 for the letter S[/url:y2gpfqas]!

Ridiculous.

The Family Restroom sign from the Upper Deck (I peed in that room just a few weeks ago!) started bidding at $25 and now it's at $185.

And there's nothing "Shea" or "Mets" about it. If it had a picture of Mr. Met taking a leak in a urinal, then it wouldn't be quite as bad.

I may yet splurge on something. Depends on how irrational I decide to allow myself to be.

If I knew that all this money was going to charity instead of lining some asshole's pocket, I'd be tempted also. But I'm not. So go eff yourself, Barry Meisel or whatever your name is.

I just made a purchase from the vultures who are taking apart Shea Stadium.

The front staircase in my house is going to have, hanging above it, a sign directing visitors up to the Loge level. Those going down the stairs will be directed to the Gate B exit. I think this will be much cooler than a pair of stadium seats!

I was told that they have to have Shea emptied of all removable parts by this coming Monday. At that point everything will be carted to their warehouse in New Jersey and shipped from there.

I should have my sign by the end of October or early November.

They couldn't tell me the shipping fee. I'll have to just hope it's not too much.

I thought about it and decided that I'd be more likely to regret NOT getting a piece of Shea Stadium than I would be to regret spending the money. The sign will cost about as much as a few nights in a hotel room when we're on vacation. ($500) I'm guessing the shipping will be about another $100 more.

There's a couple ways this could all go.

Either they sell it all (and the seats, from what I understand, were spoken for very quickly) which would give the Mets & the city & whatever selling agent they're using reason to claim that they priced the stuff correctly or even generously all along.
Or it doesn't and the assorted junk starts to build up in that warehouse and a couple of months from now becomes bargain-hunting time for a bunch of savvy fans looking to pick stuff up.

Oct 07 2008 04:35 PM

By the way, the Mets home dugout is available for a cool $100,000. If you want to be a cheapskate, you can get the visitors' dugout for half that price.

You know those replica baseball cards that would be posted above the ticket booth, showing the starting lineup?

A bunch of them have been sold, but Carlos Delgado's is still available for $350.

Um... this is what it says on Mets.com:

"The Mets will donate their portion of the net proceeds to the Mets Foundation. The Mets Foundation funds and promotes a variety of charitable causes, including educational, social and athletic programs for young people in the community."

Sounds like charity to me.

Personally, I don't see the big deal. If the Mets just put everything in the parking lot and said "here take it!" some asshole would just scoop it all up and sell it for exorbitant prices anyway.

If they can find it at Shea, I'd like to purchase Aaron Heilman's lost confidence. Couple of hundred bucks should do it. I'd even give it back to Aaron at no charge.

]"The Mets will donate their portion of the net proceeds to the Mets Foundation. The Mets Foundation funds and promotes a variety of charitable causes, including educational, social and athletic programs for young people in the community."

"Their portion" being the important words here.
Part of it is going to the city (they own the stadium) to defray the cost of the demolition.
Part is going to the Mets as mentioned.
And part is going to the firm that's handling the deconstruction, the head of which has already claimed the 410' sign portion of the wall for his own.

I don't think anyone has said how big a portion goes to who. But it reminds me a bit of those inter-city charity AIDS bike rides that seemed to fall apart a couple years ago after it was revealed that only about 20 cents on the dollar were getting to the intended target; people don't mind paying the price as much if they think the money is going to a good cause. Hard here to figure out how much of this stuff is.

I just got a call from the MeiGray group.

My sign measures 23 inches by 64 inches and weighs 32 pounds.

It's too heavy for UPS to ship, so I have to decide whether I'm going to go pick it up myself, or have it shipped by a private trucking company.

They're going to get back to me next week with the exact shipping cost. The estimate is "about $100."

Their warehouse is in Bridgewater, NJ, about a 50-mile drive from my house.

Nov 24 2008 12:38 PM

Well, I made my Saturday trip to the MeiGray warehouse in Bridgewater, NJ and retrieved my Shea Stadium ramp sign.

The warehouse is near exit 13 of I-287. When I got there my sign was ready for me but I did get a chance to see the inside of the warehouse. It was like a Museum of Shea, except that the exhibits were stacked on metal shelves.

I saw one of the Mr. Met "Thanks for being part of the Shea Stadium experience" signs that I coveted but didn't want to spend $1500 for. I also saw some scattered SNY signs and the sign that hung over the Dugout Shop.

There were also a lot of the V-shaped signs (I never thought of them as V-shaped until I saw them on the floor of the warehouse) that had hung over the tunnels leading from the interior of the stadium out to the seats. You know what I mean, the signs that would tell you what section the tunnels would lead to. I don't recall having seen those on the price list so I don't know what they were selling for. The one nearest where I was standing was for Mezzanine Section 19.

Anyway, my sign is 23 inches tall by 64 inches wide and weighs 32 pounds. It doesn't explicitly say "Shea Stadium" on it anywhere, but for anyone who knows Shea it couldn't be from anywhere else. The part that says "Loge Level" is color-coded blue. It has a picture of the neon catcher from the outside of Shea and says "Gate B" and "Third Base" on each side.

The sign is in pretty good condition. There are a couple of scratches on it and some paint drips. The paint is kind of a putty color. My guess is they were painting the wall or ceiling or ramp above where the sign was hanging and some paint dripped down.

The sign also has a tiny little hologram sticker on it that has a unique code number. Apparently if I ever decide to sell the sign, the buyer could key in the number on MLB's web site and verify its authenticity. I think they're doing this with most collectibles these days, but other than yearbooks and stuff like that, I don't have much of a memorabilia collection. In fact, this sign is my total collection. I also have a little folder with a certificate of authenticity.

I haven't photographed the sign yet, but once I do I'll post the pictures here. We're going to eventually hang it above our front staircase, but we'll have to figure out the best way to do that. For now it's leaning against a wall in our downstairs.

I know there are some here who have a principaled objection to buying these pieces of Shea, but not me. I look at that sign and I love it. I just plain love it and I'm so glad I have it.

It's truly unique. It could only have hung in a specific part of Shea Stadium. I wish I had known I was getting it when I was last at Shea in September. I would have gone to visit it with my kids, and we could have looked up at it in its original location and pictured it one day in our home.

My daughter has already told me that she wants to get the sign after I die. I told her to marry a Mets fan so that her future husband can appreciate it too, and she said she'd try, but that she wouldn't marry a Yankee or Phillie fan. And that she'll move to New York if she has to do that to find a Mets fan.

R for Ramp.

B for Gate B.
