We should have a separate tournament for baseball-related movies (Bill Simmons argues that Bull Durham is really a chick flick in disguise). Having said that, Bull Durham is wonderful, even though Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone, as argued by Crash Davis. The look that Annie gives Crash on the porch in the final scene of the movies is priceless. And this is the film that gave Robert Wuhl the greatest moment of his career:

I've never seen what the greatness of the movie is, and merely attribute it with goodness. The best part of Wuhl's performance --- and the missus picked up on this before I did --- was the absolutely accurate way he jogs to the mound with a stride that makes it look like he's hustling but is actually making ground slower than he'd be doing at a reasonable walking pace. (OE: I've probably posted that before.)

The end of that video --- when John Parr walks around the set, sings to each of the St. Elmo's Fire characters, and they each look up from their naval gazing to smile as if "John Parr has made me see that everything is going to be alright" --- is just craptacular. It's almost felonious.

I wasn't as ga-ga over either of these when they first came out as the general public seemed to be -- but funny scenes at ballparks beats brats in bars any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Two asides for Bull Durham. I went to see a ballgame in Durham in the new stadium back in 1999. The home run bull from the movie -- "He hit the bull! He gets a free steak!" -- is on display, but that really about it from the movie. I was talking to an employee about that, and he said the team actually tried to distance itself from the movie because it was rated R and they want a family environment at the park. Then, back in 1990 we were in Chicago playing Wiffle ball up against Wrigley Field -- long story -- and these guys walked up and wanted to play. One said he had a cup of coffee with the Twins and even had what appeared to be a World Series ring. But the other guy claimed to be the actor who played second base in Bull Durham and even did the whole conference from the mound scene. Will and I are convinced that neither of them were who they claimed to be, but we let them play for a while anyway. The fact that the alleged former Twin couldn't hit my knuckleball weakened his case, but I do throw a nasty knuckler.

Sarandon was around 40 when she shot BULL DURHAM and Demi Moore, on her bestest day, couldn't lick the hem of Ms. Sarandon's garter belt in that movie. In fact, Susan is hotter today, at age 62, then Moore has ever been in her entire talentless, plasticene life. You take on the bull, you gonna get the horns.

Not even close. Bull Durham, not Field of Dreams, is the greatest baseball movie.
