Ghostbusters is going to win this one and deserves to win this one, but I had to throw a vote to Heaven Help Us or my Catholic guilt would have overwhelmed me.

Not hard to determine who I voted for...

I never learned the "guilt" part of being a Catholic. Maybe that's part of the reason it didn't' stick.

Anyway, I loved Ghostbusters. Best fusion of comedy and horror since Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

Big laughs, some scares, great, if pilfered, theme song. Who you gonna call?

Ghostbusters - no question!

I don't know why guilt has anything to do with appreciating this movie. The whole thing subverts the institution beautifully. If anything, it's a victory over any guilt. Everybody that I ever met who truly went to a sadistically repressive Catholic school was cheering by the end.

Heaven Help Us was billed as Porky's goes to Catholic school, which got it completely wrong.

  • It's gorgeous first-love story.

  • It's a perfectly laid out period piece (with 1965 looking like 1965 and not 1971).

  • It's got a wonderful score from James Horner --- forget a cheap and silly ripped-off theme song --- from before he became an orchestral beast.

  • It's got nuance and heart.

  • It's virtually the debut of Kevin Dillon, Andrew McCarthy, and Mary Stuart Masterson.

  • It's full of foul-mouthed innoncence and pious malice that almost always comes out cartoonish but doesn't.

  • It has actors playing 15-17-year-olds who look 15-17.

  • It has a perefectly selected supproting cast of Wallace Shawn, Larry "Bud" Melman, Yeardley Smith, and Donald Sutherland, et al.

  • It's funnier than Ghostbusters. I said it.
Everybody who votes will have seen GB eight times, but this one maybe not at all. Rent it. Tonight!

It doesn't. That was a joke I though you at least would get.

Actually, I'm aiming at Grimmy with that comment.

But Grimm was responding to me and not really referring to the movie at all.

I'm equally confused.

I met a guy who hooked up with MSM. Twice.

Edge, Heaven Help Us.

Ghostbusters is going to wipe them out. And they won't even have to cross the beams to do it.

I guess the "it" of "it didn't stick" refers to Catholicism and not Heaven Help Us.

Well, never mind then. I guiltily beg forgiveness for the first line of my response and stand by the rest.

I always like Sigourney Weaver, even if I can't spell her name. And Rick Moranis is really funny.

But, truth be told, I like anything with Bill Murray.
