Lacey Underall division, All-Valley regionals:

(7) E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial

(10) Stripes (not the trailer but a cool video!)

Didn't see Stripes, but remember thinking I'd probably hate it. Loved E.T., so it gets my vote.

I loved E.T. a lot less when I watched it again many years later. (A VHS of E.T., purchased for my young son, was the last thing I ever bought at Woolworth's.)

I liked Stripes. I thought E.T. was a bit insufferable at times.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm voting for Stripes.

The first 45 minutes or so of Stripes were great, the rest of the film not so much. ET was probably a better movie start to finish.

But, if given a choice of watching either of these movies RIGHT NOW! I go with Stripes.

I got overSpielberged with ET.

Stripes was g-r-e-a-t for the first hour, complete garbage after that. But it had cool music.

Harold Ramis teaching ESL was hysterical.

I'm also a minority. Male librarian, specifically, but that's not relevant here. I voted for the silly Stripes over the mawkish E.T..

Six votes for each movie , not a minority so far.

STRIPES is an ocasionally funny service comedy, up until they decide to raid Chekoslavakia, at which point the stupidity overwhelms the comedy.

E.T. is a global touchstone. Emotionally manipulative, yes, but so are most successful works.

i vote for sentiment over stupidity, and superb craft over sporadic competence.

I think this is the first time I've disagreed with Vic in these brackets. I'm going to close my head in a desk drawer now...

Eh, I think that only counts if you don't notice you're being manipulated.

Melissa Mathison showing screenplay economy Stallone can only dream of.

Come.

Stay.

Ahh...

Ouch.

Ouch.

I'll be...

My Bill Murray bias kicks in again, recognizing that he's essentially the same character in each one. I'm loyal to a fault.

Just lucky "Meatballs" isn't in the brackets and I'd have to justify the vote...

Well, you notice years later on reflection and repeat viewing, but, at the time, folks was swept away in a brand new terribly creative way.

I thought it was crap from the start and I was (an admittedly cynical) eight-year old.

Are those that are damning ET for its sentimentality the same folks that voted for ARTHUR over ROAD WARRIOR, and are currently voting for KARATE KID over PEE WEE?

just wondering.

Yes. But I'm more voting against the competition in those matchups than I am voting for those films.

Nope, I voted for Road Warrior and Pee Wee.

I've been reciting lines from Stripes for three decades. Daily.

I voted for Road Warrior and Pee Wee also (and Pee Wee losing is a travesty, a travesty I say). I saw ET when it came out and couldn't wait for that puppet to die -- never saw Stripes so I have to abstain.

I voted FOR Stripes, Road Warrior and Karate Kid.

I'm basing my votes on which movie I liked more, whatever the reason.

A perfectly reasonable approach, as always, Mr Can. and, as both your votes and mine indicate, sentiment in some contexts is less annoying than in others.

Is there anyone who's NOT voting for the movie they like more?
