Fifth Infielder

You may have heard about Tampa doing this last night, bringing in their right fielder for a fifth infielder with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the 9th in a tied game.

My memory is hazy at best, but didn't the Mets do this once in the mid-90s, bringing in Tim Bogar from the outfield?

Probably, although I don't remember the specifics. It's rare though not unheard of and Bobby certainly wasn't one to pass up an opportunity.

I do know Hodges used it a few times years earlier. He also once took an infielder and stuck him in the OF for an over-the-top 'no-doubles' defense.

Hodges sent the second baseman out as a fourth outfielder. I don't know that he ever used a fifth infielder. I know Chuck Tanner did against Wally Backman once.

That would explain the gigantic Tim Bogar poster anyway.
