Yesterday I and three friends took part in the True Blue Golf Classic at the Washington Duke Golf Club in Durham, NC. The tournament was created as a fundraiser for the women's basketball program at Duke University. It was a cold, windy, and rather miserable day, but we had a great time anyway.

Our team shot 21 under for 18 holes (with the aid of one free throw per man) on the day. Our score was good enough to take the tournament title and win bragging rights since a group of our comprised the second place team.

This is our team with coach McCallie after completing the 9th hole.

This is me putting a 20 footer (our longest putt of the day) for birdie on the 9th green. I lipped it out, but my best friend, Kevin (black vest and white turtleneck) had my back and drained it moments later.

Congrats , sounds like a fun time , not kidding here but if someone showed me that picture from a distance I would say it might be Jack Nicklaus , definitely his form standing over the putt and the hair to boot.

Good stuff!!

I just can't golf without little windmills and loop-de-loops. I went to a driving range and could only do something like a converted softball swing. But on a mini-golf course I kick butt!!

Looks like you had a great time. Congrats!

JCL, several in our group came to the same conclusion after meeting coach McCallie on Monday. She seemed quite down to earth too. She high fived each of us and gave my buddy Kevin a quick hug after he made the putt.

Hottie McCallie = married with two kids.

McCallie made her way to Durham via Michigan State were she spent the past seven seasons as head coach, while leading the Spartans to a 149-75 mark. She led Michigan State to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, four straight 20-win seasons and an appearance in the NCAA Championship game in 2005. She molded Michigan State basketball into one of the elite programs in the nation, which includes an 81-23 record over the last three years.

McCallie guided Michigan State to its best season in school history in 2004-05 as the Spartans advanced to the National Championship game, won a school-record 33 games, won a school-record 14 Big Ten games, while sharing their second Big Ten regular-season championship, won their first Big Ten Tournament title, finished 13-0 at home, had a school-record 17-game winning streak and beat 13 nationally-ranked teams, including four teams ranked No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3.

After leading Michigan State to a remarkable season in 2004-05, McCallie was named National Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, Basketball Times, and Nike, as well as being voted Big Ten Coach of the Year by the league’s media. She was also selected the 2005 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan College Coach of the Year.

McCallie, 41, led the Spartans to a 24-9 record this past season, tied for the second-best total in school history. Michigan State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, marking a school-record fifth straight NCAA appearance. Along the way, McCallie’s squad beat two ranked conference teams on the road, at No. 13 Purdue and at No. 4 Ohio State. The Spartans beat all 10 conference teams during the league slate for the first time in program history. The team’s 13-3 conference record was the second-best in program history and placed third in the Big Ten.

Under Coach McCallie, MSU saw its fan base increase dramatically. The team has set season attendance records in four of the last five seasons, including a school-record average of 6,787 fans in 2005-06, which ranked 10th in the nation. The Spartans were second in the Big Ten last season with an average of 6,646 a game and ninth in the NCAA. While hosting the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history on March 18 and 20, Michigan State attracted 21,340 fans for the six-game event, the most of any of the eight preliminary round sites. All of MSU’s top 15 single-game crowds in program history came during Coach P’s tenure, including a school-record 14,066 against Ohio State on Feb. 20, 2005.

Over the summer of 2006, McCallie guided the USA Basketball U-20 team to a 5-0 record and a gold medal in the FIBA Americas Championships in Mexico City. The squad outscored its opponents by 62 points per game and set 28 U-20 records in the event. McCallie will also be coaching the FIBA U-21 World Championship team in Moscow, Russia this summer from June 29 - July 8.

A native of Brunswick, Maine, McCallie owns a career mark of 316-148 during her 15-year stint as a head coach at Maine and Michigan State. As a coach and player, she has led her teams to 13 conference titles, 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, four NCAA Elite Eight appearances, three NCAA Final Four appearances and three NCAA Championship game appearances.

During her eight-year stint at Maine, McCallie guided the Black Bears to seven straight 20-win campaigns, including a 20-11 overall record in 1999-2000 and their sixth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. She was named coach of the year on three occasions, twice in the North Atlantic Conference (1995 and 1996) and once in the America East (1999).

Prior to becoming Head Coach at Maine in 1992-93, McCallie was an assistant coach at Auburn from 1988-92. As the team’s primary recruiter, she helped sign the fourth-ranked class in the nation in 1990-91 and the 16th-ranked class in the nation in 1991-92. While at Auburn, McCallie and the Tigers appeared in two national championship games and made an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight.

The former Joanne Palombo, prior to getting married to John McCallie, played her collegiate basketball at Northwestern from 1984-87. She still ranks seventh in Wildcat history with 378 career assists. As a senior, she was an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection and helped lead the Wildcats to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. McCallie also was named Academic All-Big Ten First-Team as a senior.

McCallie graduated from Northwestern in 1987 with a degree in political science and earned a master’s degree in business administration from Auburn in 1990.
The McCallie family includes husband John, daughter Madeline (Maddie) and son John Wyatt (Jack).

McCallie will be the fourth head coach in Duke University women’s basketball history as she replaces Gail Goestenkors, who took over the helm at Texas earlier this month. The Blue Devils have advanced to the NCAA Final Four on four different occasions over the last nine years.

Duke returns three starters and nine letterwinners from their 32-2 squad that advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Highlighting the returners include rising senior Wanisha Smith, rising junior Abby Waner and rising junior Carrem Gay, who each started all 34 contests this past season. Duke will also welcome back 6-5 center Chante Black after redshirting 2006-07 due to an injured knee, rising senior Emily Waner and rising sophomores Brittany Mitch, Keturah Jackson, Joy Cheek and Bridgette Mitchell.

McCallie will gladly welcome one of the top recruiting classes in the nation that includes three WBCA High School All-America selections-- Krystal Thomas (Orlando, Fla.), Jasmine Thomas (Fairfax, Va.) and Karima Christmas (Houston, Texas). Both Krystal and Jasmine Thomas were recently named Parade First Team All-America.

Re: We didn't drive this far to lay up...

We returned today to defend our title. The weather was much better than it was last year. It was a little chilly when we teed off, but it quickly warmed up to 67 degrees under a bright sun. Our team returned with a minor change in personnel, as our ace (with the "unusual putter grip") was unable to make it this year. We forged on and made a valiant effort to repeat, but our 16 under score was only good enough for 4th place in a field of 34 teams.

We ahd a great time once again and we look forward to returning for another shot at the title next year.

Re: We didn't drive this far to lay up...

Another year has come and gone. Yesterday we returned for another fun day of golf at the beautiful Washington & Duke Golf course on the campus of Duke University. It was a little brisk in the early morning, but it quickly warmed up to a wonderful 78 degrees. We returned with the same line up as last year with high hopes of improving on our showing of last year. We put up a solid score of 22 under and felt we had a good chance of taking the title once again. Alas we finished in second place to a team containing several of our usual golf group from town. A fun time was had by all and that is the most important thing.

Here we are behind the 18th green with Coach McCallie. You can tell that the weather has been warmer each year.

I appreciate the comments by everyone. I have lost 18-20 pounds between the pictures of last year and this year. However, my first thought upon seeing the three pictures is that I've lost more hair than I have weight. My hairline seems to be in retreat and my forehead keeps getting bigger.

A few observations and stories from this year's tournament:

Coach Joanne P. McCallie is often referred to as "Coach P" around the Duke campus. Coach McCallie seems to be a very friendly, outgoing, and down to earth individual. In the little time I have been around her in the past 3 years, she is a lot of fun to be with.

During the luncheon, Coach McCallie talked about attending an event for the Jimmy V foundation earlier this fall. She talked about how nice it was to see some of her good friends from the coaching profession. She said that she had a nice visit with Bill Self of Kansas and how much she enjoys his friendship. She said she teased Jim Boeheim that working with Coach K on Team USA was taking it's toll on him and his rapidly graying hair. She stated that Boeheim was just about her favorite coach and stated what a wonderful person she felt he was. She said that she, of course, ran into Coach Izzo as well. She stated that they unfortunately did not share a good relationship and that they had had some run ins with one another during her time at Michigan State. She stated the two of them "didn't kiss and make up", but they were "cordial and polite" to one another.

Coach McCallie is stationed on the 18th green every year so she can meet, greet, and putt with each team. This year she missed our 20 foot birdie putt. Our first putter, the lefty in the blue hat and blue vest, knocks it in like he should be on the PGA Tour. Coach McCallie calls him "a little stud muffin" and gives him a high five and hug after the putt went in. Our team spent the remaining holes kidding him about his new nickname of "stud muffin". After the luncheon and award presentation, we are gathering up our things to catch the shuttle bus back to the golf course parking lot, when suddenly we hear, "There's my stud muffin" from behind us. Coach McCallie is smiling as she comes over to thank us for participating and congratulates us on a second place finish. Our "stud muffin" asks her to pose for a quick picture with him, which she happily does before moving on to the next group. We get on one of the shuttle buses and again commence teasing "stud muffin". Someone asks why we're calling him that and we proceed to explain how his new moniker came about. Then we show him and anyone else on the bus that desires to see it, the picture of he and Coach McCallie.
Guy in front row, "She's never called me that." (while looking at picture)
Doc, "Me neither. I guess we need to make the big putt when it counts. Well, there's always next year."
Our group continues our banter and a few others join in on teasing "stud muffin".
Eventually, the guy in the row behind me taps me on the shoulder and asks, "Do you know who that is?"
Doc clueless, "No. Should I?"
Guy behind me, "That's John McCallie, Coach P's husband."
Doc dumbass, "Oh...damn."
Oops on our part. Her husband seemed to be a good sport about it all, but we all felt like idiots afterward.

Oh yeah. Coach McCallie is a rather attractive woman and her wonderful personality makes her more so.
