Starting to get the wheels rolling for our annual off-season parody challenge. If you're in, please post here so I can add you to the list and start to figure out seeding.

If you're new, previous entries are here. Here is last year's bracket, which apparently I forgot to finish updating. (Transmonk beat soupcan in the finals.)

The rules are simple. You're given a topic; use a song, any song, and Metify the lyrics. Once both players are ready to go -- discuss via PM or via this thread -- either person starts a new "poll" thread and posts their song lyrics. The other person should follow in post two in the thread. Discussion ensues for 24-48 hours (depending on weekends), and whoever wins, wins. Ties will be determined by a playoff round.

One quick thing to discuss -- do we do it like last year (where each matchup's topic was predetermined, and the writers worked off the same topic -- see the bracket in the link above), or like previous years (you get five random topics to start, then with each win, you add your opponent's remaining topics to yours), or some combination of the two? Thoughts?

I vote, "five random topics to start, then with each win, you add your
opponent's remaining topics to yours" and will add that I liked it better
when it was only players names and not topics too but I won't be de-
bating over format issues.

Every year I tell myself I'm not going to put myself through the angst and stress again. And every year I sign up for it anyway.

Yeah, I'll give it another shot. What the heck.

I agree with Kase about the format. In the past I liked having the freedom to pick my subject for each round.

I liked it in previous years, when the players were able to choose from the list they indirectly selected, and the list contained ONLY PLAYERS.
If thet's the way it is going to be, count me in.
If there's a chance we would have to write a song about the home run hat, count me out.

I support that rule too. It's a rule I made up.

But when a guy like Seawolf puts aside his time to invite you to a party --- and sets it up so he hopes every one will enjoy it --- publickly RSVPing that you're not showing up if you don't specifically get your way can be kind of ungracious.

I propose each entrant be assigned a given Mets team and must compose that season's "Let's Get Metsmerized". Chicken is obviously ready for anything between '96 and '02.

I'm happy that the tiebreaker idea appeals to you, my Czar

I wouldn't want to include coaches - that's a little too esoteric, IMO.

If we were to include managers, what if we limit it to the top ten? Just to give everyone a shot at getting a parody-worthy skipper.

I have come to the conclusion that the parody contest is far more enjoyable as a spectator than it is as a competitor. I look forward to reading everyone's submissions, but I don't intend to participate this year. I guess I've become lazy in my later years.

Nov 04 2008 07:11 PM

First round could be done in group play. Six groups of 3 contestants each with a round robin in the group. Only the top two from each group advance to the next round. The tie-breaker would be the percentage of cumulative votes. Or it could be less complicated. I just like the idea of everyone getting two shots before they're expelled.

Nope. Its the difference between wanting to play AL or NL baseball - different skill sets and different kinds of players. I just want to know which game is being played. And the question still hasn't been answered, so please don't include me on the list until it has been. Let the "host" answer. After all, it is his game.

EDIT:
On second thought, count me out.
It looks like it will be more fun to stand on the sidelines and score the entries using the same standards to which I held my own entries. (I posted them last year)

themetfairy
Nov 22 2008 07:19 PM

As someone with a play-in round, I'd prefer not to have an assigned topic for what could be my only matchup. I'd rather pick a 6th number, or just figure that the play-in round winners have an extra opportunity to pick up defeated opponents' players.

The extra inherited players makes up for having to play in the extra round, IMO.

We're going back to the Old School format this year. You'll be assigned a list of players. You write a parody about one of the players for your first round. If you win, your next parody can either be about one of your unused players or your vanquished opponent's unused players.
