LET'S GET IT ON!

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=295637

Your matchups are above. Coordinate with your opponent as to when you'll post, then each matchup will have 48 hours to run, starting at the time when the second parody is posted. One combatant start the thread with a poll, and the other will reply with their song. Myself or one of the other mods will sticky the thread.

Everyone please refrain from commenting in the thread until the second parody is posted, then we'll open it up for debate, discussion, and wanton abuse of bad parodies.

Any feeling regarding bumping up against Thanksgiving and people's availability to vote?

seawolf17
Nov 24 2008 12:52 PM

That's why I'm figuring we wait until after the weekend. Gives everyone a chance to work out their songs.

themetfairy
Nov 24 2008 12:59 PM

That's fine. By mutual agreement, Greg and I will start our play-in round next Monday.

G-Fafif
Nov 24 2008 01:00 PM

The 16-17 bracket has agreed to come aboard a week from today, 12/1, in deference to the holiday.

G-Fafif
Nov 24 2008 01:01 PM

As you can see, the Fairy and I are so in sync that we'll probably choose the same song.

seawolf17
Nov 24 2008 01:03 PM

Like soupy and I did last year.

For the other play-in, I can agree to wait until 12/1 also if Mole is OK with it.

Just to throw it out there, for those participants posting their entries. It would be helpful to post the artist and song you are parodying, besides just linking it to YouTube, since some people cannot access that particular site at their workplace.

Thanks, play may now resume.

themetfairy
Dec 01 2008 10:54 AM

Actually, I'll disagree with that suggestion.

Some people prefer figuring it out without hints, so posting the song and artist would spoil it for them.

I'm sorry, all. I really meant to do it this year, but 60 term papers arrived on my desk at exactly the same time, and my mind has kinda turned to jelly and I lost track I apologize, and will try to arrange my schedule better next year.

I will say, on the subject of identifying song and player, that the last time I did one of these, I got knocked out in the first round, with many people complaining that they couldn't vote for me because I hadn't identified the player I was writing about.

Considering our propensity for discussion and archiving, I don't think that Facebook would be a sufficient substitute for this place.

I find Facebook to be a good place for lightly keeping in touch with people. But I don't think it would work well for extended discussions.

You are quoting Metfairy. Maybe she can explain it to you. I'm not really a facebook person.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Dec 13 2008 08:36 PM

Facebook allows you to communicate with people much more passively than you could in real life: You can hear only as much from them as you allow and say only as much as you want.

themetfairy
Dec 13 2008 08:41 PM

Lunchbucket explained the concept well. You can leave someone a quick "touching base" kind of message there, comment on a picture or a link that they post, etc. It has helped me retain contact with some people, but it's generally of the quick hello type of variety.

There are also a ton of quick hits that look straight out of the Aporos of Nothing thread! And many times they fall under the THAT IS TOO MUCH INFORMATION category.

A co-worker of mine is on Facebook and summed it up like this:

You know, it's great that you enjoyed those pancakes this morning, but come on, does everyone need to know that?

He is not quite done with his song and neither am I. However, my song is at home and I won't be able to finish it until tonight and I think he could get done by then as well. Should we post then? I am just afraid that this close to the holiday might screw things up.

i seem to be getting killed. deservedly so. what i posted was probably the third or fourth song candidate that i came up with for this round... about 15 minutes after i gave up on my prior attempt. the first few lines of that one were beginning to look like a winner, but when you're flying over the middle of the country with nothing but an ipod and only one player on your parody list that you remember a damned thing about (um, like, name, position, and the team he played on both before and after his stint with the mets), its really hard to fill several lyrics-heavy stanzas.

We should have a Final Four but I don't know who is in it besides me.

Who won holychicken -v- marathon? That person goes against G-Fafif. The winner of that matchup is also in the Final Four. Has that matchup already been decided? Who won?

Lunchables -v- Vlad has not been done yet right? That winner is our third Final Four member.

The fourth is the winner of A Boy Named Seo/Willets Point. Has that been done?

Yo, over here. This was like three weeks ago (not that you can be blamed for not noticing, glacial pace and all). I await the winner of JCL vs. AWOL.

strange how people just fall off the face of the planet and can't sign in

Thank you. My proposal would be to set a firm deadline, and anyone that doesn't comply gets their head chopped off and set on a pike!

Just kidding.

I wasn't thinking of solving the current delays, although the range of solutions are fairly obvious.

I have an idea for next year's contest, assuming there will a next year's contest. My proposal would affect the core setup and would make some fundamental changes to the contest.

My suggestion would be to predetermine the theme player for each matchup. So, for example, if I was charged with making up the brackets, my proposal might be applied as follows:

#1 seed vs. #16 seed (Ken Singleton)
#8 seed vs #9 seed (Hubie Brooks)
#4 seed vs #13 seed (Armando Benitez)
#5 seed vs. #12 seed (Jeff Torborg)

This method would somewhat (though not entirely) diminish a contestant's ability to complain that his or her assigned themes are less desirable than those of his or her opponent.

Also, it would be easier, fairer, and more fun (this fun part is obviously my opinion, and more vulnerable to debate) to vote on a matchup where the two contestants worked with the same subject matter.

So there you have it. There it is.

themetfairy
Mar 01 2009 10:18 AM

As a participant, I don't like pre-assigned topics. Part of the fun of the exercise is the freedom to choose among your different players.
