FA Compensation

I'm not sure that this is official, but "according to documents obtained by SI.com" Jon Heyman's column lists the following FA types as determined by the Elias Bureau: Type A - Team receives (subject to arb procedures) a draft pick from the signing team + a supplemental pick Bobby Abreu Doug Brocail A.J. When Sports Illustrated signed Jon Heyman in 2006, do you think Newsday demanded any compensation. I'm guessing no.

Heyman was a Type D(umbass) free agent, though, so Newsday had no recourse.

I'm happy to see that Ollie is Type A. We figure to break even with first round picks. Speaking of which, Juan Cruz pitched 51 innings last year. He'd be the kind of reliever the Mets should avoid anyway, but he's absolutely not worth a first round pick. Not sure what to do about Ayala. Compensation would be nice, but I'm not sure I'd want him taking arbitration to stay here. We'd probably have to pay $2M, which I don't think he's worth.

Keep in mind that the compensation rules only apply if the club the player was with offers them arbitration. Ex. we're obviously not offering Moises Alou arbitration, so even if he signs somewhere else, we're not getting a compensation pick.

That's true, but I was (perhaps mistakenly) assuming the D-Backs would offer. Cruz made only a little more than Ayala ($1.9M), and while he pitched 20 less innings, he did have much better numbers otherwise.

Someone explain why Doug Brocail is worth Type A compensation.

Jeremy Affeldt is intriguing. Kind of live arm that Omar is allegedly hot for.

I like Affeldt too. Lefty workhorses aren't common, plus his HR total would likely go down if he came here.

So Brocail, despite being about to turn 42, has rung up decent enough WHiPs, ERAs, W-L records and so on in each of the last two years to put him into the top 20% as compared to other relievers.

Ah. I didn't know they were based on the previous two seasons - I'd thought it was based on the prior season.
