I assume you have all seen conservation campagin Chevron is spearheading --- I'm certain in cooperation with the Congressional Committee to Otherwise Ignore Chevron. You know, it's the sort of campaign that leads to this sort of discussion in the boardroom.

"Anderson, what sort of penetration are we getting from the conservation campaign."

"Um, very little, sir."

"Wait, didn't we get Blalock & Schmidt on that?"

"Madison Avenue's finest, Sir."

"And it's failing because..."

"We designed it to, Sir. We sell oil."

"Right. Next order of business."
Anyhow, if you know what I'm talking about, you are as familiar as I am with this dear heart:

And this sweet child:

Now I see the two pretty ladies surrounded by sunshine, greenery, modest makeup, and and other visual satisfyiing lifestyle cues meant to flatter the target audience, but the guy... the guy. Every day, I head to work (sometimes by bike, more often these days by my new wife hauling my new fat body in her old Tercel) and I pass a bus shelter displaying this guy. Nothing about him says social responsibility... but more likely amoral Eurotrash.

If you get this guy's arm twisted behind his back, you don't get a pledge to use less energy, you get, "I will... I will seduce fewer women. But it is not me, you understand. It is them. They come to me. I please them. But if it is important to you, my friend, yes, I will seduce fewer women."

He fascinates me. "What were they thinking?" I wonder each day. And then I remind myself. "Right, they were trying to fail, and fail spectacularly."

Never seen these ads but they sound like the ones I put in the category of being designed to make the producer of them claim some sort of moral high ground and feel better about themselves rather than to actually inform or solve a problem.

I've seen the ads, I think "designed to fail" is a bit much. Bad casting on that one guy. And everyone would rather listen to a hot girl anyway.

I use less energy every day too. Some days I fall asleep on the couch right after supper.

His caption should say "I will decide whether or not to grow a beard."
