Thanks very much for the good wishes, pie and poems (I've kissed so many boys though, that I've lost count...).

Big birthday for me as a Syracuse alum...

The Legend of #44

On November 12, 2005, Syracuse University retired the uniform number 44, to honor Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, and the legacy of the number itself, which has become so associated with Syracuse that the university's ZIP code was changed from 13210 to 13244 and its phone exchange was switched from 423 to 443.

Jim Brown

Brown, who played at SU from 1954-56 and led the team to a Cotton Bowl berth, went on to become the NFL’s all-time leading rusher and a member of the Pro and College Football Halls of Fame. He led the league in rushing eight times in his nine years. Many still point to him as the greatest running back of all time. Among Brown’s accomplishments at Syracuse was setting an NCAA single-game record of 43 points against Colgate in a 61-6 SU win.

Ernie Davis

Davis played for the Orange from 1959-61. He won the 1961 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first African-American to do so, and was a starter on SU’s 1959 national championship team. Davis also signed to play with the Cleveland Browns, but the devastating combination of Davis and Brown in the same backfield never came to pass. Davis died of leukemia in 1963. He was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Floyd Little

Little was a three-time All-America selection for the Orange. Little played for SU from 1964-66 and led the team to the Sugar Bowl in 1964 and the Gator Bowl in 1966 (teaming in the backfield with Larry Csonka in the latter). Little was the greatest kick returner in Orange history. In addition to breaking the records of Brown and Davis, he led the nation in all-purpose yardage in 1965, averaging 199 yards per game. Little went on to have a tremendous career with the Denver Broncos, winning back-to-back rushing titles in 1970-71. He, too, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Derrick Coleman

Derrick Coleman was one of the greatest all around basketball players in Syracuse history. Accumulating more rebounds in his career than any other player in NCAA history (modern day). This despite playing alongside other great rebounders while at Syracuse (Rony Seikaly, Billy Owens and Stephen Thompson). Coleman brought a certain swagger and confidence to the court, something that would irritate opponents and their fans. In the 1987 NCAA championship game, Coleman grabbed 19 rebounds (an NCAA freshman tournament record). Coleman played four years at Syracuse, helping the team to a school record 114 wins during that era, against only 30 losses.

They retired 44? Not that anyone playing on that team these days deserves it anyway, but that seems like a dumb thing to do.

Happy Birthday Soup.

I didn't know SU retired the # either. I always assumed that the # was reserved for what the University perceived to be extraordinarily talented incomings. I just figured the Uni hasn't had one of those in a while.

Happy Birthday, Soupie.

A wild keg party with all your friends should do the trick and you'd likely have a little fun i the process. No matter what you choose to do, I hope you have a great birthday.

I can't believe you didn't mention Jim Brown's accomplishments as a Syracuse lacrosse star.

Happy birthday soup! I remember when you were captain of this ragamuffin bunch. You bring so many intangibles to the table.

Thanks again guys.

-KC - that's very cool. I like that.

-ABNS - I'm digging the Karl Erhardt picture!

-Grimm - I appreciate the soup for lunch although not a big fan of Italian wedding.

-mgim - RE: Douchebag Neighbors - the other day I was driving down my driveway and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw the skeleton of some huge structure being built there - again! I parked my car and stalked to the fence only to see - nothing. Totally my eyes playing tricks on me, but man I was pissed and ready for showdown.

-Willets - Jim Brown LAX - Only because I gleaned that info from the SU site and in that blurb it did not mention it. Of course any self-respecting 'Cuse alum knows that JB is condsidered one of, if not, the best lacrosse players in history.

-cooby - yes, actually yours blew chunks. The sentiment was appreciated though.

I just realized today that yesterday was my kitties' 9 month birthday, too!

Small world, isn't it?
