CHEESE!

A Boy Named Seo
Nov 17 2008 11:52 PM

Put cool pictures in this thread that you've taken of people, things, whatever. Only rule is you have to have taken the picture.

I went surfing today and saw these couple really long shadows cruise by underneath me and my board. I got kinda scared and then these three dolphins popped up right next to us. I brought my water cam to hopefully get a picture or two of a dolphin for my little niece.

Bingo.

Here's one.

I took this a little over a week ago. I was out walking, and I heard this horrible squawking noise. It turned out that it was this little guy, who wouldn't shut the hell up.

I love the expression - New Jersey attitude all the way!

For the most part I'll limit myself to one shot per day here. But I wanted to post my Beginner's Luck shot.

This was the day I bought my Nikon D60 camera. The big question is whether the ball is just getting to D-Wright's bat or whether he just hit the ball (and yes, it was a home run).

I took these in Pisa in November 2004. I like how, unlike typical photos of the tower, they show both the scale of the Leaning Tower (it's a lot smaller than many people think) and its relationship to the town that it resides in. Notice the people standing on top of the tower.

There used to be a trolley line in the early part of the 20th Century that ran between Trenton and New Brunswick. Within my township, parts of that trail have gradually been re-paved and opened to the public as walking/running/biking paths. This advertisement is along that trolley line.

themetfairy
Nov 23 2008 10:32 AM

We met in the lobby for breakfast, and one of the guys started teasing me - he was saying how I missed such an amazing steak dinner, and I really missed out.

Venice flooded yesterday, which reminded me of my visit there four years ago. On our last day, there was an Aqua Alta (high water) and it made it hard to get around.

This year's flood was much higher, and they couldn't deploy the platforms seen in this photo because the water would have made them float.

We had to carry the kids through the deeper water. Since it was our getaway day, we weren't sure we'd be able to drag our suitcases to the waterbus station, but luckily the water receded by the time we were done with our last sightseeing stop.

Why did the goose cross the road?

I don't know why, but I caught him doing it.

This was the first time I actually observed a goose walking, which caused me to finally comprehend why the Nazi march was called the Goosestep.

Time's are tough, ya eat what you can grub up.

Actually, it's in my stew. It just struck me funny. When I first was pulling it
out of the bag it was almost erotic looking and then it quickly became mu-
tant as it got longer and uglier and I never saw a double carrot before.

I never claimed to be well en la cabeza.

You want geese? We got geese...

124/365 Beware Geese Crossing

There's an intersection right next to the duck pond downtown, and the geese are always crossing back and forth. The running joke in town is that the geese really run the town...

My mom told me a story about one time when a lawyer was 15 minutes late for probate court, because the geese were blocking traffic. When the judge inquired as to his tardiness, he only had to explain that it was caused by the geese - the judge only laughed and understood... Only in Milford...

That goose picture is fabulous! Did you just hold the camera down and shoot blind, or were you able to get down low enough to look through the viewfinder?

Since I've switched to digital, it's a lot easier to get off-angle photos -- you don't have to worry about wasting film. It's especially good for getting photos of kids, pets, and other low-lying objects. Photos work so much better from the subject's level, rather than from overhead.

I was actually laying on my stomach at the edge of the intersection getting that shot. Yes, I was ever mindful of the traffic...

I agree with you about the ease of getting off-angled photos - I've gotten to the point were I can pretty much frame a shot with my wide-angle lens without looking through it. This is one I took of my youngest last year at the local carnival - we were in the ferris wheel, and I just held my camera down around my knee, and pointed up:

Gezebo on the Green - Brenizer Technique

The gazebo on the Milford Green on New Year's morning - this is my first attempt at a technique I read about here. It involves using a telephoto lens and taking multiple shots of a scene and then stitching them together - this results in a wide angle shot with a narrower depth of field than would otherwise be possible.

This shot consists of 50 images stitched together.

Iubitaul, awesome work with a very innovative technique. I don't think I have thwe patience or the software to duplicate such an effect. If you don't mind my asking, what software did you use to piece the images together?I would imagine this technique is infinitely more difficult with my old school film SLR. Nice article, thanks for sharing.

I would like to be able to stitch 3-4 images of panoramas together, but I'm not quite sure how to do it without having my own dark room to develop and manipulate the images. I may have to try to see if I can do it by digitizing shots and then stitching them together.

dgwphotography
Jan 03 2009 06:24 AM

Thanks Doc - I used Photoshop CS3. This would be exceedingly difficult to do in the darkroom - your best bet would be to digitize the images first. A dedicate film scanner would work better than a flatbed that scans the prints, IMO.

Yeah, I guess it does. (I love the old guy's shoes, by the way. You have to be of a certain age to wear shoes like that to take a nap in the park.)

Apr 11 2009 07:09 AM

oh man - that looks really good - post the recipe, please...

Kong76
Apr 11 2009 08:15 AM

There's no real recipe, per se, things like that just
evolve. There's a lot of sliced garlic, a little chopped
onion, and fresh chopped basil sauteed in olive oil and
an unhealthy amount of salted butter (there goes the diet).

Add some bottled clam juice, white wine, chicken broth
(yes chicken broth), a little oregano, crushed red pepper,
sea salt, crushed black pepper, and some fresh chopped
clams. Simmer covered for a half hour on low heat. I use
commercial pans so I just put another one on top and it
makes a nice little stainless steel stove top oven. Make
some penne or rigatoni and set aside while that's going
on.

Give the clams a two minute start covered and then add
the shrimp, scallops and cook to your doneness. I don't
like overcooked seafood. Throw the pasta in and mix it
up and serve right in the pan. Why dirty a platter?

Works good with mussells and squid but the squid looked
old in the store and they didn't have any mussells left. If
you use squid, cook the squid during the half hour simmer
time. Squid is funny, you can cook it real quick sometimes
and it's tender or you can cook it a half hour and it's ten-
der. There is an in between point when it's rubbery. I've
taken to cook squid at least 30-40 minutes these days.

They're all made out of scrap metal. When first installed they are silver but very quickly the extreme elements give them a rusty patina.

Up close they are really amazing.

I did mention that they are prehistoric creatures but there are a few exceptions - the large Indian head, sits outside an area called 'Indian Head Ranch' and the rams are representative of animals that presently live in the foothills surrounding the desert. They are known as 'Borregos', hence the name of the desert- Anza-Borrego (Anza was the explorer who first came to the area).

From a friend in Tucson: Background: My brother, Daniel, was visiting a friend in Montana and touring through Glacier National Park . They were hiking up a CLOSED ROAD when they came upon this scene. It is evident that the mountain lion and bighorn sheep were fighting on the mountain and fell to their immediate death sometime during the struggle. Pay special attention to the mouth of the mountain lion.....as it still has sheep hide in its mouth! Tyson.

There's a set of 2 steel cables drilled into the rock (I think originally by John Muir). About every 10 feet or so is a wooden board to get your footing on. Someone slipped and died off this thing two weeks before we got there. It's kinda steep and once in a while a little scary, so of course she's one-handing it.

The real bitch of it is that there's 2-way traffic on those cables.

Here's us on the way back down:

metirish
Aug 19 2009 12:41 PM

and she's not wearing a harness?

A Boy Named Seo
Aug 19 2009 12:57 PM

We were there a little over a month or so.

No, only saw 2 people with harnesses. One guy had his kid harnessed in (he was maybe 10 or so) and one other guy. That was it.

The cables are thick and can be a pain on the hands. There's a giant pile of communal gloves at the bottom and you can grab a pair for the trip up and back. It's pretty gross, but necessary. One of my gloves was ripped and I got a couple nicks from the cable on my bare hand.

Some people had no business on that thing and it made it harder for others who were a little more prepared for it.

Pretty dangerous and there's basically no rules or anything. Great views, though.

Half Dome and El Capitan are the two most recognizable sights in the park. We camped right in Yosemite Village and the hike up to Half Dome was 17mi round trip from the campsite. Long ass day (and then we drove back to LA that night!)

Here's Half Dome from afar. This was taken on the hike to Yosemite Falls the day before. Once you get to the base of that thing, the cables are the last bit to the top.

We were only there 2 and half days or so, so we went to the visitor center for maps, but ran into the same. The woman at the desk kept trying to talk us into doing other stuff in the village and gave us a couple of visitor guides and like a newspaper, but yeah, the help wasn't all that.

Very crowded, but insanely beautiful. Here's one more and that's it, I promise. Nevada Falls, IIRC.

The event took place in 1972 (thanks to G-Fafif for narrowing down the date based on a 1972 calendar) at my parents' temple on Long Island; since my dad was the Men's Club president at the time, he got to keep the poster. I don't remember much about the actual event, except that it was very exciting to have a 1969 Met talking to us at our temple and then signing autographs.
