Metfairy got me some of this for my birthday last year. There's just a little left...this week's crappy winter weather and scraping the windshield in the dark morning hours, etc etc, left my hands mighty chapped and I've been using this on them. It works great! It smells good too.

Just a little stocking stuffer idea for you boys with wives.

Got these in my stocking at Christmas (calm DOWN, I asked for them). As the proud owner of both asthma and sensitive skin, dryer sheets are not always kind to me, but these things are great!

Clothes are nice and soft; haven't really paid attention to whether they dry faster, but if it saves money on fabric softener over time, they'll pay for themselves that way.

Not that I bought them, of course, Santa did.

I like 'em too but there's no safety packaging on that jar. The jar top is all that separates anybody from the pickles. And there's nothing to indicate whether the jar was opened by anybody else after leaving the factory but prior to retail purchase.

Kong76

You're right, and that's why they should be only bought when green, and
I have commented to my wife that the jars should have one of those pop
up vacuum safety seals or something.

Those kind of pickles are easily made at home, but I've never ventured.

Stewart's is okay. Gooderer, in my opinion, and just as widely available:

They also do a "Cane Cola" (real sugar, no high-fructose corn syrup jibberjabber)-- and a "Diet Cane Cola"-- that kicks some serious soda patoot.

their Pipeline Porter is also especially delicious, brewed as it is with 100% Kona coffee. i'm not typically a fan of porters, i don't think, but this i would happily drink.

speaking of coffee...

in my humble opinion, this is the best coffee in the world. and its trellis-grownness is patented. and it's served in the white house.

they also sell a new "barack o-blend" which is a mix of kona, sumatran, and kenyan coffees. however, it's not as good as the straight trellis-grown kona.

i must note, too, that the barack o-blend left a bitter aftertaste which, i hope, does not prove too prophetic.

I'm the only person in the house that drinks coffee so for me this brewer is great, one of the things I hated about the old coffee maker I had was making a pot of coffee and throwing away half of it, plus the coffee going cold in the pot. With this of course it's one cup at a time , made in 30 seconds. Plus I have always liked green Mountain coffee.

All said and done with buying the brewer from Green Mountain Coffee and getting 5 cases of coffee/tea and cocoa I paid $140 and that included two day shipping. They gifted me the two boxes of cocoa...

The boxes of coffee with 24 K-Cups cost $11 and change so it's good value.

I just jumped ship from Sprint and was thinking about the Palm Pre. I watched a vid on YouTube that compared it head-on-head w/ the iPhone and it compared very favorably according to this particular nerd. My heart was just set on the iPhone. 'Fraid I can't speak on the Pre with too much authority, but that phone seems to be a real contender.

I was with Sprint for 9 years and was pleased enough, I guess. Any changes I needed to make I could always do them online and not have to talk to people, so that was a plus. I imagine they're all that way now, though.

Nice driveway.

You'll be happy you got a wagon and not a big dumb SUV.

Did you consider the Volvo V70, or whatever their wagon is? I have no idea offhand if the $$ between that and the Audi are similar, just curious as we will someday have to replace the lunchmobile with a wagon too.

Best of luck with the new wheels.

metsmarathon
Jul 12 2009 09:25 AM

we considered the volvo a little... but not really. the fuel economy on it is suprisingly poor, and relative to other cars we were looking at, it had the worst braking and accident avoidance abilities - worse than some small suvs/crossovers even! pricewise it comes in about the same as the a4, but doesn't have the AWD.

plus i've been lusting after A4's for about a decade or so, so all it really had to do was not give us a reason not to buy it.

i mean, i did my research which actually showed that, based on what we were looking for in a car, the A4 met our needs pretty well, but more importantly it showed that buying it wasn't going to be a big huge dumb mistake based on how pretty the car is.

i wanted the wagon, and had to convince mrs.marathon that it would be cool, as compared to a sedan. since the audi sacrifices sheer utility for swoopiness, it doesn't have a boxy wagonyness. and most importantly, when you're inside, and trying to maneuver the car, it doesn't feel like there's this huge extra unweildy space behind you that a boxier wagon can give. so i think i'd have a hard time getting her to go for the V70. the V50, tho smaller, might've been an easier sell as it's smaller and sportier, but still fairly boxy.

but the inagility and poor economy of the volvo compared with the agility and economy of the audi (plus its innate audiness) were insurmountable.

sadly, the new car is mrs.marathon's ride, and not mine. my old pontiac G6'll continue to be the primary accruer of mileage, and will take up all the dirty tasks that we had reserved for the old saturn. but in 4-6 years (prolly closer to 6), i'll get the audi as a sweet hand-me-down, and she'll get he next new car.

i can't wait!

Volvo is what's wrong with marketers. They help companies realize that, once you estabilish a brand assoication, you can dial back all efforts you've made to establish that association, because it's in the zeitgeist and has become self perpetuating.

So Volvo thirty years ago worked hard to make safe cars, became the model for the industry, and became known as such. You move to the suburbs and have kids, the safe/smart thing was to buy a Volvo, if you had the change. And aren't your kids worth the change?

But the rest of the industry caught up with them 20 years ago, and they actually fell behind 10 years ago (behind Ford if you believe it --- I think a Taurus wagon is a safer car). The reputation still sells, though the reality has gone the way of durability in a pair of Levi's or good customer service at Borders.

metsmarathon
Jul 12 2009 01:48 PM

to be fair, i think the volvo is still going to be fairly safe once you actually find yourself in a crash. its just that its inagility makes it more likely to find itself in one - which is a key aspect of safety that often goes underappreciated. especially in this country where big suv's are presumed to offer safety and security to the wife and kids.

actually, wait. i take it back. one of the things that afairly disturbed me in my research was hte alarming lack of 5-star crash ratings for the volvo S40 and S60 (i didn't check the S80, on which the V70 is based, and the V's don't have crash ratings listed for them on edmunds.com). it could be a matter of a pair of older platforms and lesser airbags or something, but still, the larger S60 had 4-star front driver & passenger ratings, while the smaller S40 had 4-star front driver and an unsettling 4-star rollover ratings. both had 5-star side front and side rear. well, its not really fair to say unsettling. the 3-star side rear crash rating on the new honda accord is unsettling. but compared to the a4, which gets 5 stars on all fronts, its disappointing.

and with the new kid on the way, safety is kindof important to me :)
