That's impressive.

We definitely need to plan a CPF trip to Opus 40 in 2009!

That is a great video...

Old Mole, how much upkeep does it take? It looks so relaxing. Are people allowed to sit there and read or think?

(also, please forgive the dumb question, but is that a real hornets nest behind you up on the wall??)

That is a great video - one of these days, I have to go up there with camera and a lot of memory cards...

Watching that was a beautiful experience.

Now that's an artist.

The video was a perfect marriage of images and music.

A lot of upkeep. And yes to sitting, reading and thinking.

And a hearty yes to a Crane Pool gathering here next year.

Mercury Rev ( who supply the backround music) have a new fan.

I just went to get the song used and got a few more by them.
The one used is called Holes.
They do a song actually called Opus 40, but oddly enough its not as suited to the Opus 40 video as Holes is.

Beautiful.

As a child, I loved watching reruns of "In Search of..." with Leonard Nimoy. There was an episode dealing with a kindly old man who built massive sculptures with his own hands, to the amazement of his neighbors, who never knew how he could do it. Was this Fite?

I'll search for the old story online, but have little hope of locating it.

OE: Nope...The Castle of Secrets: The saga of the Coral Castle, said to have been built by Edward Leedskalnin, a frail hermit who alledgedly carved and lifted 1,100 tons of solid stone blocks weighing upto 30 tons each using the secrets of Atlantis. Original broadcast: 24 January 1981.

That's really great. I have a friend with a summer house up near there. He's been to Opus 40 and tells me its just amazing.

I've been trying to get to Mercury Rev about doing a benefit here.

Here at the CPF?
I KID!

One thing that so amazed me about that song was its use of the theremin,
which I only just recently learned about from themetfairys War Of The Worlds YouTube Video thread.

Re: Opus 40

Yesterday D-Dad and I dropped our older son off at a summer precollege program in New York. I mentioned this on Facebook, and TheOldMole invited us to Opus 40, while we were more or less in the 'hood. We took him up on his kind offer, and were very glad that we did. The place is absolutely amazing!

MK couldn't resist climbing up to the base of the obelisk that's the centerpiece of Opus 40 -

Mole giving us a description of how Harvey Fite created Opus 40 over a period of 37 years -

Me and Mr. Mole -

And, of course, with D-Dad -

MK in a moment of reflection by the pool (bad pun intentional) -

We are truly grateful to TheOldMole for his gracious hospitality, and encourage any Crane Poolers in the area to visit this amazing work of art in person.

Beautiful pics. I need to get to Opus 40 myself one of these days.

So does the Old Mole really have a patrician baritone?

Re: Opus 40

Not necessarily a lovely singing voice, but I'll be going into the studio to record a few of my songs in a couple of weeks.

Disagreed #1!
You can hold a note and your voice has character.
It's up to others to judge what kind of singing voice you have, but you certainly have a great one IMO.
And now that I think about it....."lovely", well, maybe that's the wrong word, lol.

Nevermind...

Re: Opus 40

Tonight we ate supper at my son's house; they had a book there called "Roadtrip America" or something like that...anyway, my husband was flipping through it and there was Opus 40! I said "I know the guy that owns that!"

It's cool to know people.
