Rule 5 Draft

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 21 2008 06:01 AM

Mets added Mike Carp to the 40-man roster making him ineligible to be selected.

There was speculation out there they would add 3Bman Shawn Bowman, but they didn't, and presumably had the room to.

Draft is usually the first day of the winter meetings. ... Dec. 11

The addition of Carp makes it only 34 slots filled (acc to what I read) so they have LOTS of room to add players via Rule 5, FAs, trades, etc.
Some analysis I read a few weeks back opined that the Mets should leave themselves adding room but 6 spots is bigger than I expected.

Agreed. Two-three more slots are probably fillable.

Can't they still add a few more players between now and December 11? Or was yesterday a deadline of some sort?

Except that the 40-man rosters were frozen as of last night.
Any new names to be added at this point will come from outside.

Yeah, I got that. I meant more of a a pespective on what they could have done.

I guess it means to brace for the impact of a lot of transactions. Prediction: Collazo gets claimed.

I think Collazo is a minor-league free agent at this point. Which I suppose doesn't make it any less likely that he'll be in a different organization next year.

So who is on the 40-man ...errr, 34-man roster at this point?

Delgado
Castillo
Reyes x 2
Wright
Carp
Schneider
Castro
Anderson
Chavez
Murphy
Evans
Beltran
Church
Tatis

Pagan?

Santana
Heilman
Maine
Pelfrey
Feliciano
Schoeneweis
Sanchez
Smith
Kunz
Wagner
Muniz
Niese

Burgos?, Stokes?, Knight?, Vargas?

I'm obviously missing some.

I think Robinson Cancel is still on the roster. They have tender/non-tender decisions on Stokes, Vargas, and Burgos. That means they're all currently on the 40, although I see no reason to keep Burgos around. I don't know what Knight's situation is.

Have they put Fernando Martinez on the 40 yet?

Frayed Knot

As far as I know, Martinez hasn't been signed long enough to need to be protected by being on the 40.

I tried checking the 40 on Mets.com but it kept freezing on me.

Maybe someone else will have better luck.

Can they free up a spot by releasing Billy Wagner?

seawolf17
Nov 21 2008 01:46 PM

I don't think they can release him, but they can put him on the 60-day DL, which takes him off as well. I'm actually surprised they haven't done that yet. (Or maybe they can't do that at this point in the off-season yet.)

Edgy DC
Nov 21 2008 01:51 PM

Can't release an injured player. Guh.

Frayed Knot
Nov 21 2008 02:13 PM

There's also no 60-day DL at this time of year -- nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.

Besides, it's not like they need to create room here.

Seems he's already signed with the Marlins.

I'll always remember how they spelled his name wrong on the back of his jersey. sniff. Goodbye, Willie.

Got to be the only mis-spelled name in Mets history (aside from missing tildes), although I certainly recall recent callups going out there nameless while their teammates all had names. I also remember some 1987-ish sap (Don Schulze?) pitching while the letters peelled off of his hastily fabricated jersey.

I distinctively remember Jason "Middlerbook" pitching in a game once, but that was before DVR and digital cameras, so I wasn't able to capture that the way I grabbed Willie "Colazzo."

This mention excited me so much I looked it up on google only to find one entry -- yours -- from 1995
