2008 Charity Gift Exchange

A Boy Named Seo
Nov 30 2008 05:01 PM

I was looking through the archives and it looks like this would be the 7th year for this. Gee, ain't it funny how time slips away?

If your 401K statement has minus signs all over it like mine does, then it doesn't take that screamy guy on CNBC to know that times are tough.

Given the current crunch, do you guys have interest in this again?

For the new or the forgetful among us, we've done a gift exchange where each participant gives the name of a charity they support. After a random drawing of names, each of us gives a donation of a pre-determined amount to the charity we drew. That's it.

I'm in if you guys are. $18's been a steady number for us in the past.

Yes or no, Happy Thanksgiving to all of you's just the same.

And, like last year, I promise to give extra money if the charity in question gets a good rating from Charity Navigator.

I'll give a base rate of $20. I'll make it $40 for a three-star charity and $60 for a four-star charity.

This year I will go with Baby Hearts[/url:jcnqebka]

As a family we know how fortunate we are to be here in America where we were able to have our son see some of the best Doctors in the field of pediatric cardiology and to have a world renowned surgeon perform his surgery. That same surgeon has in the past done surgical missions to poorer countries to perform surgery , during our first meeting with him he told us about a boy he did surgery on that he then adopted , he said to trust him that he's son is now 17 and doing great .

Anyway this charity goes to various countries to help kids born with congenital heart defects.

It's a 3 Star charity.

Like a few others above, I'm also going with a feed-the-hungry charity this year, as they're the ones that seem to be hurting the most in this economic climate.

Mine is Philabundance.

]Philabundance works to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley by acquiring food and distributing it through organizations serving people in need. Philabundance was founded as a nonprofit food distribution system in 1984, to reduce food waste and fight hunger in the Delaware Valley. In 2005, Philabundance integrated with the Philadelphia Food Bank to become the region's largest nonprofit hunger relief organization. Today, Philabundance offers a full plate of services to Delaware Valley residents at risk of chronic hunger and malnutrition. In fiscal 2007, we distributed 24 million pounds of food.

Three stars from Charity Navigator.

Irish's "tighter than a duck's arse" point well taken (I assume that has something to do with Gary Carter's new job). Anyway, count me in for an Agee (or a HoJo).

My nominee is Island Harvest, which I learned about late last year at the direction of an "in lieu of flowers" suggestion when a friend's mother who volunteered for them passed away.

]Fighting hunger and touching lives, Island Harvest — Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization — serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it. Our volunteers and staff “rescue,” or collect, good surplus food from over 600 local restaurants, caterers, farms, and other food-related businesses; and distribute it to a network of close to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, and other places where those in need can access it. We also conduct educational programs to increase hunger awareness and inform the public how they can get involved in our mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Island Harvest has received a four star rating – the highest – from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charities, two years running.

Haven't been around here much lately, but I'm in for a Jackson (Andrew, not Al).

American Diabetes Association, in honor of my brother's father-in-law, who died of a diabetes-related heart attack last month. "Brother's father-in-law" sounds like a distant relative, but since I'm single and no longer have family in the NYC area, I usually spend holidays out in Cleveland with my brother, his family, and his in-laws. So I knew Bill fairly well.

I talked with my dad this morning. He had spent the week dealing with the inevitable task of making final decisions for my grandmother who has been suffering from Alzheimer's for several years. She was taken to the hospital last week with an infection and the doctors told my father that in order to prolong her life she would need to have her legs amputated. After delibiration, my father chose to move her back to assisted living and give her all of the pain medication she requires rather than remove her legs. The doctors give her 2 weeks at this point.

I agree with my dad's decision and I admire his strength as an unmarried only child who is going this pretty much alone. He goes to visit her nearly every weekend even though she hasn't been able to recognize him in 5 years. She was an intelligent, articulate and confident woman all of my adolescent life and the toll that this disease has taken on her is absolutely horrific.

In my earlier post, failed to chose a charity for this year. After some deliberation, I decided to choose The V Foundation since my son attends NC State where Jimmy Valvano coached until his untimely death. It is also a way to honor both my wonderful mother-in-law and grandmother, that each succumbed to cancer in recent years.

Taking inspiration from Ben Grimm's generous offer earlier in this thread, I promise to double my donation should the charity I receive be rated at 4 stars by the charity navigator site.

We make accomodations -- you do what you have to do, like everyone. Some of the substitutions that we've found (e.g., brown rice pasta) work out allright, while others (e.g., gluten-free bread) just stink no matter what or how.

For the rest of you, imagine that you were allergic to sandwiches, pizza and beer. There you go.

My wife is allergic to wheat. I feel your pain. We've found that larger sumermarkets are starting to carry larger gluten-free sections, and one of the local colleges even hosted a gluten-free fair with all kinds of vendors. But it's tough. Dear Mr. DC,

Thank you so much for your contribution of $20.00 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Your support is hard at work bringing us closer to our goal of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Your support has helped us establish the global breast cancer movement and build a grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Today, Komen for the Cure reaches people in more than 200 countries and is the world's largest source of private funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs, with nearly $1 billion invested to date.

Most important of all, these efforts have helped save millions of lives, making the two million breast cancer survivors living in the United States the largest group of cancer survivors today.

Because of your help, we are one step closer to creating a world without breast cancer.

]December 11, 2008 Dear Mr. Lunch: Please accept our sincere gratitude for your generous donation of $20.00 to the American Diabetes Association in honor of Mr. Mendoza Line. It is truly a privilege to have your support. As you may know, the American Diabetes Association is the nation's leading nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Your honor gift brings us closer to the realization of our mission: To prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Millions of people with diabetes and their families are the true beneficiaries of your meaningful gift. Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations. Most of these programs match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift. To find out if your company will match gifts to the American Diabetes Association click here. Again, thank you so much for your support. Only through the voluntary generosity of caring individuals like you can we continue our quest to conquer diabetes in our lifetime! I agree, but I already got my one Vogue cover this year. I'll send feelers out to "Field & Stream" and "Good Housekeeping" NOW!!!!
