Star Ray, Star Ray Knight

Spar Ray, spar Ray Knight
In Cincinnati dressed in grey
Took out on a summers day
By Davis and the base that he just stole
Melee on the hill
Punches thrown and the blood did spill
Pitchers ganged up on Mitchell
And from the tied up ballgame you were banned
Just to lend a hand
McDowell played the field with glee
Roger alternated with Jesse
And the Mets won six to three
Hojo hit the ball, with his mighty power
Hear the footsteps now?

Score Ray, score Ray Knight
Dashing home from second base
Buckner's err you would not waste
Crossing the plate to win for New York blue
Teammates mobbing you
Storm the field alive again
Clemens will drink no champagne
And Boston lost the series in the end
Give yourself a hand
Man, you played a great series
How you stepped up with your team in need
Won World Series MVP
They would not sign you, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll want you now

Though we still did love you
It's time for Hojo to play too
And when no place was left in sight
For the star Ray, star Ray Knight
You left New York, as players sometimes do
But I could have told you, Raymond
The Mets were not still meant for one
As powerless as you

Sorry, sorry Knight
Struggled as an Oriole
Traded for a bag of balls
I'm sure your final years you can forget
But you weren't finished yet
The ragged man in the skipper's clothes
For the team who loved Pete Rose
Could only lead them to a third place show
Everybody knows
What you do to stay busy
How you caddy for your wife Nancy
And call baseball on TV
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will...

YOU'RE SHAWN GREEN

(Shawn of a gun)

They put you in the lineup
And they told you that you would play right
You had a pretty decent defensive rep
They said that your fielding was tight

But the scouting reports were out of date
And we watched you fall apart
We hoped like hell they would hit it to center
Hit it to center, and

You're Shawn Green
You used to be good in the outfield
You're Shawn Green
You're no longer good in the outfield
Are you? Are you?

You won a Gold Glove several years before
When you were just twenty-six
Based on your work with the New York Mets
I wouldn't pick you for Pick-Up Sticks

They land balls in the corner, and
They shoot them down the line
The slowest guys, they can leg out a triple
Leg out a triple, and

You're Shawn Green
You no longer play a very good outfield
You're Shawn Green
Who, now, said you could play outfield?
Who now? Who now?

[Instrumental Break]

Scott Spiezio, he would leg out a triple
Leg out a triple, and

You're Shawn Green
Your abilities disintegrated
You're Shawn Green
You're a tad overrated
Aren't you? Aren't you?

When I first heard we acquired you
My joy was a bit misplaced
I was happy to have a fellow Jew
Join in the pennant race

Shared heritage only goes so far
Once your skills have gone to seed
It would be nice if you'd drive in some runners
Drive in some runners, and

You're Shawn Green
Maybe you were good on the Blue Jays
You're Shawn Green
You seemed to leave it all in Toronto
Or L.A. -- oy vey!

So I'm reading / singing along with Star Ray, Star Ray Knight and I'm thinking 'Brilliant! No wonder Monk won this thing last year, this is fantastic, G-Fafif's got his work cut out for him, how could he possibly beat this?'

Then I read/ sing along with G-Fafif's and thinking 'Wow, this is also fucking great.'

I have no idea how to vote here, wish I could split my vote.

Sorry, sorry Knight

Just great! Kudos to you both!

Great work by each contestant. This was a very difficult choice.

FYI: here's a more recent version of "You're So Vain", by Foo Fighters:

Superlative stuff!

I'm stuck.

What makes G-FaFif's thingie so impressive is his lyrics pick up on the change in tone between the first half of the verse and the second, as Carly starts battering home major chords instead of minor as she gets more abusive, so does Greg.

And yet, I can't bring myself to vote against Monk. Both went with WTFM slow-tempo seventies classicks. My word.

Clash of the titans here - like Rush and Twisted Sister in a battle of the bands, and we get front row seats! Kudos all around.

Well done.

I went with Greg's entry... it just resonated more with me for some reason.

Both awesome. I don't know how he did it, but Monk stayed perfectly true to the cadence and rhyme scheme of the original like it should've been written about Knight all along.

Bravo, both of you.

Monk's cleverness hitting on the "star Ray Knight" vibe was excellent but he put it away for me when he got Nancy involved.

Two great entries.

Tough battle, so far...great job G-Fafif.

Starry, Starry Night seemed easier to tell stories to, though.

Right backatcha. "Vincent" always reminds me of John Olerud being allowed to leave as a free agent. This world was never meant for one as beautiful as him.

Now he's got company.

Both excellent.
Its a shame we can only vote for one of them.
They could both be winners against other competition.

It's been more than 48 hours and I'm still slightly ahead. Does that mean I won this round?

Yup, yup. Congrats on a great song!

/shaking hands with Monk who, like Ray Knight himself, kicked serious ass with his entry.

I feel like Rickey Henderson after passing Lou Brock.

Seriously, an honor to parody with you. And on behalf of 17-seeds everywhere, I'll try to avoid Rickey's fate as a Mets coach (namely going down in flames.)

Boo! on the sub-par turnout.

As a competitor, I'm happy to see TM's ass bounced.

But as a dude just singing along to these parodies in my empty office, I'm totally bummed I won't get any more from him.

Great job to Greg, too. 17-seed in 2-seed's clothing.

Low-scoring defensive struggle.

I'm sure the low turnout is the result of people being unable to decide between these incredible entries.

Dec 18 2008 04:32 PM

These two are the best.
Damn.

They both are so good all I can do to decide is go with the original song I like better.

But its a shame both cant move on, cause both are winners here.

HA!
My vote tied it.
Hope it stays that way.
