The Legend of Rocky Cherry

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Dec 12 2008 11:34 AM

This is the thread where we keep tabs on the biggest addition to the 2009 bullpen, Rule 5 draftee Rocky Cherry.

]As a young boy, Orioles reliever Rocky Cherry found a poster of a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader while rummaging through his house. Then he found out that his mother had been more than a third-grade Catholic school teacher. Surprise. Merry Cherry was part of the famed Cheerleading squad in 1975 and 1976 - three years before her son was born. "Now that I look back, it was a pretty cool accomplishment," he said. "She's done well with it. She does those reunions and gets to go back, and I get to meet some of the newer cheerleaders because she's hanging out with them, so that's a good thing. "When she first did it, it actually was a real big deal. She got paid very well, and they flew her to a lot of places to do car shows and boat shows and stuff like that. It was a great opportunity for her, and she really enjoyed it." Not only isn't Cherry the first celebrity in his family, he doesn't even have the coolest name. That distinction goes to his mother. "With a name like that," he said, "I guess you're destined to be a Cheerleader."

Here's the 1976 squad.

Which one looks most like Rocky?

I'm guessing the skinny one second from the left in the front row.

The blond dead center in the third row from the back, or second from left in the back row.

I'm pretty sure Iubitul did a good amount of masterbating to that poster growing up, he might know.

Does this mean someone is going to start a "Met Moms" thread? (Like the wifey thread)

Snooze reports the Mets have begun the process of offering Cherry back to the O's. There's still a chance they won't take him and then he could be offered minor league employment by the Mets.

Good luck, Rock.

I second Val's guess. Same bone structure around the eyes. Did I say bone?

Maybe the Mets are thinking that they could have found a way to keep Steven Register last year if they gave themselves more time to work something out with Colorado (not that it appears to have been consequential), and they don't want to decide they like Cherry or O'Day only to lose them in a similar fashion. But I wouldn't think that either has pitched themselves out of consideration for a spot in the show just yet.

Sorry, here's the 1976ers lovingly rendered in grainy black and white:

The 1975ers here in a jive-ass alternative uniform, with at least a few shemales on the squad:

Update from Adam Rubin:

]Righthander Rocky Cherry was offered back to the Orioles after clearing waivers, and Baltimore declined to pay the $25,000 fee to take him back. Cherry was subsequently released by the Mets, but the organization hopes to re-sign him at a salary lower than the $167,000 he was due to make in the minors had he been assigned to Triple-A without being released and re-signed.

6th from left, 8th from left, 4th from right are my guesses for Rock's mom. (in the 1975 pic)

Did the Mets need to open a spot on the 40? If not, why haggle over dollars with somebody slated to make roughly 0.1% of your payroll?

Is this like the normal procedure when the old team decline the player , apart form having a cool name has he any upside?

Merry Cherry? I'd like to get into her Nancy Pantsies, turn her into Betty Sweaty, and then leave her as June Ruined.

yeah, I'm with you on this, why pay the initial 50,000 if you're not prepared to pay 167,000 to keep him?
I know costs have to be watched across the board or they ratchet up, but that's a fairly weird mean spirited call.

According to the baseball transactions page on Yahoo, the Mets released Rocky today.

They released him with the apparent aim of resigning him to a contract below the $167,000 he would have been due. (Hence the above conversation about jerking said Rock around.)
